The latest data from Stats SA, using information from the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, corroborates this narrative, showing that the number of South Africans living abroad has increased significantly over the last two decades.
In 2000, there were a total of 501,600 South African citizens residing abroad. In 2005, this increased to 550,462 and only continued to jump from there: 743,807 in 2010; 786,554 in 2015; and finally, in 2020, the number reached 914,901.
This shows that over 413,000 South Africans left the country over 20 years.
Looking at where South Africans relocate, the data shows that most set up in the United Kingdom, followed by Australia, the USA, New Zealand and Canada.
Over the years, 110,600 South Africans moved to the UK, 119,000 moved to Australia, and 52,000 headed to the United States.
What’s particularly noteworthy is that approximately 4,250 South Africans have managed to leave the country as refugees - a number that has ramped up significantly since around 2014.
This has been most successful in the United States, where over 1,350 South Africans entered as Asylum seekers in 2022.

I do feel for Zimbabweans even though if I find their criminality a big issue in SA. I wish SAn political leaders (especially ANC& EFF) were more upstanding and could genuinely give some guidance and some workable solution amongst the Zimbabweans political formations to quell abuse of power by the governing ZANU thugs on their opposition …just so we can help them in a meaningful way and it gets back on its feettoa semblance of normal political engagement amongst these formations and how they govern their country. Zimbabweans do need help and won’t resolve this sorely by themselves it seems. It is in SA’s interest to have a functioning big neighbour, Zim is holding SA back as we’ve had to absorb millions of their ppl here into employment and this drives SA employment down and also they are a burden on social services and infrastructure.
So I’d wish Malema and his utterances were more in line of trying to get the parties in Zimbabwe working together rather than ZANU being authoritarian abusing and torturing all opposition

@@thandisilec835 I 100% agree with your take. The issue is that unlike SA and Namibia, Zimbabwe's minority rule was not only white Rhodesians. From the very start, they had a quota system and at least 10% of Zim black people were involved in the leadership of Rhodesia. Those 10% black people were never fought against after democracy was achieved and they joined (took over) the newly established political parties. Zimbabweans saw the likes of Mugabe, who was also part of Rhodesian elite, as an allay simply because he was a black man and kept voting for him. Even if SA and SADC want to help Zim, black elitism is part of the culture of the country. The system is imbedded and is a societal norm. The elite benefit from the system and it's clear that Zimbabwean masses don't want to confront their black elites. Even in SA, there are divisions among the Zim elites and the ordinary people. The country is very divided and they must master the will to fight.

How else are they asking for lower passport prices if they fear going back to Zim? How come Beitbridge Border is often bustling with travellers if they are struggling to go back to Zim. Infact all are always going back to Zim but they struggle getting back to South Africa hence they need passports. Why are they in South Africa??? Jobs. Barclays Bank employees lost their jobs in Zim coz Barclays Bank closed due to sanctions. So were those employed by Standard Bank, Rio Tinto, Datlabs and infact all businesses and industry. We are economic immigrants. We remit money back home. Sanctions destroyed our economy and the US, EU, UK say so but u do not learn. We are not looking at going to Malawi, Mocambique but to South Africa, US UK Botswana and Angola or East Africa where economies can guarantee jobs. Zim is the only country in Africa that understands sanctions more than most. This debate is foolish. It ignores weightier matters of sanctions and focuses on a hated party which is suffering together with the masses. The cause of the problem is the sanctions. Before sanctions Zim was excellent. It shall be again even under Zanu pf. Sanctions are not pizza. It will take years to undo the damage. Who called for sanctions and why???? The aim of sanctions is to reverse land reform and give the land back to former white farmers. Sanctions are to acquiesce your resolve to believe that liberation movements are a failure. Elderly are a failure. Everything else is scapegoat reason. History will judge Zimbabwe correct and future generations will give a standing ovation to ZANU PF for fighting ❤for the land.

Run for their lives to become a burden to Sans, does that make sense to you. When we fought for our freedom people died... You on the other end you want to save yours at the expense of Sans. You're evil people.

Zims believed in him because they thought that SA will have open borders and a free pass will be gained, hence they did little to go back home.

Zimbabwe is liberated but the problem is failure by all political parties to address industrialization and how to power it. Currently reliance on Hydro enemy power generation is not working as continent nolonger receive good rains to fill lakes and dams. Then solar is waste of money as can not power the size of industrial revolution. Zimbabwe need nuclear electric power energy generation now to fire up industries 24/7 using our minerals. And that would stop deforestation by communal tobacco farmers and resuscitate the environment
