Hello. I've just discovered your channel and have watched three of your videos. Yours is the best "street photography" channel I've seen. Your thoughts are motivational and practical, and I admire the way you express them--eloquently, I would say. I also appreciate that you do not emphasize gear or technique. Thanks for making these videos.

It's called 'winging it', you can literally be whoever you truly want to be, all you have to do is believe it yourself and blag you're way through it.
I have a mate who took 'winging it' as a life style, he tells these great stories of how he got into publishing and graphic design with zero experience, no formal qualification or training.
He literally blagged his way through the interview showed them he was gods gift to publishing and learnt off others on the job....
Before that he worked in a timber yard, got that job literally the same way, made out he was some expert on wood, blagged the interview.
Truth is he had no clue what the difference was between a 2x4 or a sheet of ply board. 😊

Yeah man I’m not so sure about winging it. That’s kind of thinking your one thing and acting like your another. For me I genuinely don’t believe I’m the Gary personality in the first place. It’s just camouflage. The personality I put on for street photography is no more or less real as a consequence

Fantastic! By about halfway through, I was thinking of the point you made at the end, that these principles can be applied to lots of things in life. I look forward to developing my own street photography character further.

Thanks Gary this video was very helpful cheers mate to me I had a thought of myself as Mr Ben if you know what I mean who put on an suits or whatever in a mirror and become that person. Like you said helping people and talking and chatting on the streets is the connection when doing your street photography 👍

Love it. There's something performative about street photography anyway. In many respects I think what you're doing with your channel is teaching folks to try out a different kind of persona anyway. You can't help but be inspired by and aspire to "try doing a Gary". In the scenes with the two guys here you demonstrate a masterclass on how to interact on the street. I guess the invitation from this video is to go try something different. And just look at the results you might get. // Nice work as always.

My stepdad's colleague was this outgoing, talkative guy. One day he shared that he was actually quite shy. But he knew he had to be outgoing to make it in his chosen field. So he faked it. I heard that 36 years ago when I was a shy 13 year old. I'm still shy and I still fake it when I need to be outgoing.

Great advice. Been doing that most of my life with everything. Even pretending to be the angry parent when i thought my kids were a bit naughty, being quite easy going its not easy telling your kids off with a smiley face.

I worked retail 26 years, I always put on a character. It defo wasn't me at work. But the character carried confidence. It was exactly as you describe it, like a coat. I'd get home and take it off.

    Isn’t that pretending?
The good news/bad news is the mind doesn’t know what is true. If that is the case, and I believe it is, why not tell ourselves lies that are good for us? Tell ourselves lies we can grow into and then is true?
Ester Hicks, from the Law of Attraction, states that a belief is nothing more than thoughts we constantly repeat. Why not tell ourselves things that feel good? It is as easy to tell ourselves things that feel good as it is to tell ourselves things that make us feel bad. What would you prefer, good or bad feeling thoughts?
