That was the concert my dad ordered when I was struggling with bronchial pneumonia/asthma. I was only 7 but this man's music came through loud and clear. His "runs" are unmatched by any singer. I was so blessed to have a cool Dad.
I think you can definitely learn better technique over time (Pavarotti), but the soul and gift have to be there from the start. Also, his tone-you either have that or you don't.
You're welcome! It's so nice after so many years have passed to know that the music I helped to make is still blessing people today. All honor and glory to The Lord and much respect and appreciation for this fine artist and human being, Matthew Ward.
I've been listening to 2nd Chapter of Acts since I was 15. I've seen them in concert around 6 times, met each one and fell in love with their music and Matthew Ward! I have sang and played the keys, doing around 40 of their songs...I have learned to play the piano better based on most of their music. They will always be my favorite band. Their voices sound like heavens' angels for absolute certain. I have yet to hear anything close..I don't believe I ever will. I would love to meet them again!!
My name is matthew ward, also i am a musician as well. He is way better at singing than me. I wish I could be in his shoes and live his life over again.
Matthew's voice is as powerful as it is effortlessly soulful, a voice reminiscent of Donny Hathaway, one of the greatest souls singers of all time. Hes no mere imitator, but a gifted singer able to go from soulful low reigned in tones, to ringing higher range tones in the blink of an eye, or to tear right through your heart, like his song "Love". I would love to have seen him a duet with Donny Hathaway or Kenny Loggins. White or black, these boys have soul, they were born with it.God is in them
"I walked in her room and saw her there She knelt so quietly, I knew she was in prayer There was a presence in the room I'd felt before, but I was frightened So I turned and closed her door Love was calling out my name Love was calling out my name Looking back on that day, it's plain to me My momma's heart -was crying out for my release It took years for me to be finally free Her prayers were answered Though she never lived to see Love was calling out my name Love was calling out my name .... ....... Love has the power To make the weakest man tower To make the strongest man cower God has no end to His power Love is a fire Whose flames reach higher and higher Love burns with endless desire To see us whole ..... I understand my mother's heart for me Wanting Jesus to make all that I could be Now the situation's changed, I'm on my knees Praying for my baby's eyes to some day see that Love is calling out her name Love is calling out her name .... ...... Love has the power To make the weakest man tower To make the strongest man cower God has no end to His power ....... Love is a fire Whose flames reach higher and higher Love burns with endless desire To see us whole
Yep, this'd be around '87..."Love" was the power-ballad-style piece from Matthew's long-awaited second solo album "Armed And Dangerous", which appeared in 1986. I'd have wagered (except I don't do that!) that this was the album track of "Love" dubbed over live video...until Matthew got a word wrong at the tail end of the song, which of course doesn't happen on the album...proving nicely that Matthew sounded exactly as terrific live as he did on recordings. Too rare an attribute for a singer these days. (And Matthew still sounds magnificent these days, too.)
Thanks Lee for appreciating Matt and his work and thanks Matt, that you´ve found the courage to do your own thing: to write and sing such beautiful songs like this one and so many others...! You are my favorite and the most talented vocalist I´ve ever heard. God bless you! Greetings from Germany!
The thing about classic Christian artists is that if you don't get the CD close to the time they were released, once they are gone, they are gone. It's harder to find them later on because they aren't mass produced as artists in the secular market. I've held on to the full CD collections of everything I've bought of Matthew Ward, Jon Gibson, Clay Crosse, Russ Taff, Phil Keaggy and Mylon LeFevre. Those guys were all very important during those early years of my Christian life.
Thank you Lee so much. We had 4 2nd chapter songs in our wedding! I have Hymns 2 in the car and listen to it almost every day. Usually with tears on my cheeks. Boy those digital drums were brutal back in the day :). Your sharing of these videos take me back to a time when my soul literally floated on Matthew's voice. Let's just say I was a Big fan. I am still greatly hurting but trying to trust the Lord and know that one day I will see Him face to face.
It is impossible to express the gratitude I feel for how God's music has touched my heart through 2nd chapter and matthew ward. I know they are simply the honored vessel from God (been there done that myself)... but where church worship bores me, 3 notes from these folks sets my heart flying and tears shedding and heart soaring. Praise be to God for his love and continued support! Now to just get this group to Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado so I can see them AGAIN~!!... =0)
For Tullskull Do not give up hope. In 2004 I walked away from my marriage too. God showed my then ex-husband to pray Hosea 2:6&7 and pray my heart to be first reconciled to Christ, and He would do the rest. And that's exactly what he did, and my heart was reconciled back to Jesus, then in time back to my former husband. Praise God for His faithfulness!! in Oct. of 2008 we were remarried on our original wedding date!! He is faithful and can above and beyond all we can ask or think! Be of courag
2:33 "higher" Ahhhhhhhhhh, kills me it's so good!!! As is EVERY note choice and trill Matthew sings. You might expect that on the album, but here he is doing the same thing LIVE!! This is one of my favorite MW songs. What a blessing this music is!!
Hi Lee! I don't know if I have already shared this funny anecdote with you, but I went to a 2nd Chapter concert and, I guess because Matthew doesn't jump all over the stange, this friend of mine was absolutely convinced the whole concert was canned, like Milli Vanilli. There was nothing I could say to convince him otherwise. Matt is such a great talent and what a song! Thanks!
Glory to God Cappachino! I am so blessed to hear of your victory. May the Lord use you and your husband mightily to share His' heart concerning divorce. I am in the desert now. My heart aches witnessing the fruit of her decisions. Our 5 children have been struggling. I have come to see divorce as child abuse. Thank you so much for sharing. I will take courage and attempt to walk the path that He has for me. Thank you Lord for your grace and mercy! You are worthy of trust!
I can't thank you enough for sharing this. I remember singing Holy,Holy, Holy at the top of my lungs at Church on the Way after you guys had some trouble with the track player and were were just "killing time" worshiping with you guys. There are tears in my eyes as I write this. My favorite music of all time, well except for maybe some tull:) I ask that you might pray for me as this song rips at my heart as my wife has walked away from our marriage and I cry out for her.
Matthew and the band members, whomever they happen to be, have been a great inspiration to me and my wife. We are musicians and made a living playing music. After accepting Christ Matthew and 2nd Chapter Of Acts was one of the first bands or groups that we were exposed to. Matthew helped bring us close to Jesus, through his voice and his spirit . Its obvious that he has been anointed by God to sing. Would it be possible to list list the musicians on these videos for us?(Llelandj)
The album is Armed And Dangerous. I think it's available on Matthew Ward's web site, but maybe only on cassette. CD's have been out of print for a long time...last time I checked there were a few on e bay but they were expensive ($30-$40)
@Llelandj Thank you for the videos and this comment! I would hate for some people to think that this performance by ALL of you is somehow cheated by the backing tracks. NOT SO! From Matthew Ward to Mylon to Muse now-a-days and even my own bands independent performances: backing tracks fill out the sound and do things that personal just don't have the extra arms, legs, fingers and voices to do! It's actually a testament to your talent that you all flawlessly meld with the tracks!!! Tremendous!!
All music is live with the exception of some keys that were brought in via tape, because the sequencing/midi capabilities of the day were too weak. Same combination with the vocals, some backgrounds etc flown into the mix. Some people would think this to be disingenuous, when in fact it's very hard to pull this off live. This is the only video performance ever of these songs. I'm the bass player, I should know. I uploaded this and have commented on other videos as to the method used to record.
Appreciate the explanation! Quick question: I've been enjoying these clips from this gig for years and just now circled back to listen again after many years. It sounds like a couple of the tunes have been "sweetened" a bit with more sound from the show than I remember. Were you able to get more of that audio in?
@tullskull Hi, just got this message......I'm so saddened by your situation. You are being prayed for, and I pray that your heart will know the wonderful healing of The Lord as you go through this. God bless you my friend. Lee Jones
So awesome to see this!! I was there that weekend! Do you have any other videos from that festival? There were so many other wonderful performers and speakers that I'd dearly love to see them again.
Matthew Ward has one of the greatest voices ever. An incredible song too.
He performed this song at a Jesus Midwest rally in Illinois about 1984. It is a powerful song and always moves me to tears.....
I learned from someone else that this whole concert of Matthew Ward was at the 'Jesus Midwest Festival' in 1987.
That was the concert my dad ordered when I was struggling with bronchial pneumonia/asthma. I was only 7 but this man's music came through loud and clear. His "runs" are unmatched by any singer. I was so blessed to have a cool Dad.
Was blessed to be there. Can’t remember the year, probably’86.
My favorite voice regardless of genre.
As with all great vocalists, you cannot learn to sing like this. You must be born with it. This song never fails to move people to tears.
I think you can definitely learn better technique over time (Pavarotti), but the soul and gift have to be there from the start. Also, his tone-you either have that or you don't.
It's hard to believe he has two grandbabies now! (Boy how the time goes by).
You're welcome! It's so nice after so many years have passed to know that the music I helped to make is still blessing people today. All honor and glory to The Lord and much respect and appreciation for this fine artist and human being, Matthew Ward.
Gotta love Jimmy T working his buns off in the back with '87 technology.
My favorite male vocalist. Paul.Rodgers #2 Have seen Matthew Ward many times live. Phenomenal voice and range. His songs deeply touch my Spirit.
what an awesome touching song
Awesome song!!!
This song is one of my all time favorites from MAtthew. Man those lyrics cut to the core!

Love Matthew. Such a powerful voice with thought provoking lyrics.
"I walked in her room and saw her there
She knelt so quietly, I knew she was in prayer
There was a presence in the room
I'd felt before, but I was frightened
So I turned and closed her door
Love was calling out my name
Love was calling out my name
Looking back on that day, it's plain to me
My momma's heart -was crying out for my release
It took years for me to be finally free
Her prayers were answered
Though she never lived to see
Love was calling out my name
Love was calling out my name

Now the situation's changed, I'm on my knees
Praying for my baby's eyes to some day see that

Love is calling out her name
.... ......
Love has the power
To make the weakest man tower
To make the strongest man cower
God has no end to His power

Love is a fire
Whose flames reach higher and higher

I saw this concert at Jesus Midwest in Sandwich, Illinois about 1987. Great song and voice...

I have always loved this song but even more so now that I continue to pray for my son's deliverance from the grips of alcoholism.
Matthew Ward at his best!!!

Not too many songs with this depth anymore.

this nman of God is so great that he doesn't even know it, nor acknowledge it.
Love u MW! Many blessings came from you and your sisters through the years. Ty!
Wow.....the memories. I remember him with 2nd Chapter of Acts and Keith Green in 1978 and have been a fan ever since!
Great!
Yeah!

Always Loved This Song
Thanks for posting; beautiful!!
God bless you in your loss! All comfort in Jesus Christ.
Thank you Lee Jones

Thank you for posting this wonderful song. I listen to it very often, but it's the first time I see it performed live :)
I've been searching for this song--finally--
Thank you.
The album is Armed And Dangerous. I think it's available on Matthew Ward's web site, but maybe only on cassette. CD's have been out of print for a long time...last time I checked there were a few on e bay but they were expensive ($30-$40)

Does the audio cut out after the first song, or is it just me? What an amazing vox this guy has-I can't believe I've never heard of him.
Thanks for uploading this. ( =

Thanks for uploading! I never got to see Matthew Ward live with a band. Who is the lead guitarist? Who else was in the band?

Keith Green was another important figure in my life during those early days. (Alas, I'm dating myself) :)

I was there too!
@mel1850 Love has the power! I am praying with you!.
What album are all these songs from? I gotta get this!
Where's Matthew?
Matthew Ward at his best!!!
