if you notice the chemical blocks light obsorbtion on the weeds leaves, so they work best in direct sunlight, the rest is about keeping it on the leaf long enough to kill the root too.
If you add some regular table salt or some cheap dish detergent to the vinegar it will make it latch onto the leaves better hence making it kill better
The funny thing is that I'm redoing the test with exactly that: I added dish soap to the mix and applied it in direct sunlight in the afternoon heat...video coming out soon! Thanks for the tip on salt too!
You have to use a commercial grade (concentrated) vinegar. You can purchase these at big box stores (Home depot, Lowe's...). Household vinegar is pretty weak, comparatively.
I have come across some “better” vinegar options.... 1) try a 20% vinegar solution and 2) try a dissolved epsom salt to distilled white vinegar solution (with some soap as mentioned below)!
Ah! I think I failed to mention this is the concentrate GroundClear. It certainly was an on-the-fly video. Thanks for saying something so I could clarify!
@@NoMoreLeaks If you mix the vinegar with dish soap, the surfactant allows the vinegar to stick to the plants better. Also, the best time to spray is when the stomata are open (during the hottest point of the day when the plants are exposed to direct sunlight). It may not be efficient to use when weather does not allow it. It is weather dependent, however, you don't need the herbicidal concentration (30%) if it is really hot. Two tablespoons of dish soap mixed with five gallons of regular vinegar should have the same effect as herbicidal vinegar if temp is above 78F. It is most effective against broad leaf annuals and least effective against perennial weeds, especially if they have rhizomes. Grasses are somewhat in between.
Thanks for stopping by, Jacob! Also, thanks for this knowledge drop! I'll definitely try this out next time. This certainly was an on-the-fly experiment and it will be fun to try your version out. I appreciate the detail you put in here--everyone else looking at this video can try this too!
How are things now in September? My flower beds need to be weeded horribly (have not done so in a few months 😕). My oldest was weeding by hand & found a baby copperhead 😳😱 ..... so, now I'm looking for a good lasting weed killer. I know we're fixing to get into fall & Winter WV/KY/OH area) & I don't care to reapply, I just don't want to be pulling weeds by hand for fear of snakes.
How scary! I wouldn't mess around with that either--throw on some GroudClear and get the heck out of the flower business (said as nice as possible from out here in the desert land of thorns and our own snakes). We didn't get a monsoon season this year so the weather certainly hasn't helped with this experiment as it's only rained twice a day apart. Both sides of the side yard do not have weeds, but again, having only a small amount of rain hasn't really given them a chance to grow. I'd still put money on the Ortho GroundClear, but other commenters recommend 20% vinegar (which I haven't tried yet due to the lack of need). Here's to hoping you don't see another copperhead for a long time!!!
Thank you for the follow up comment, it's much appreciated & I'm totally with you on the say no to weeds bit. For some reason my husband thinks it's better to just pull weeds rather than use a weed killer and then he wonders WHY the weeds come back so fast 🤦♀️ (obviously he isn't getting all the roots). I am definitely not a weed puller. I like to plant flowers, but not pull weeds 🤷♀️😂 Here's hoping the ground clear works! WV tends to stay wet & muddy for what seems like forever (spring & fall). I don't care to reapply it, but at $25 I'm hoping it lasts at least 3 months. We getting into fall weather now, mowed the grass for probably the last time until spring (maybe once more, we'll see how fast it grows) so the real test will be spring here. I'm just glad & thankful my daughter didn't get bit, that would've been awful had that have happened.
You seem to have the better experiment testbed! I sure would love to hear how it does in the spring. I will say, your husband is better than mine--mine pulls out the weed wacker and leaves all the roots! We agree to assign ourselves to different tasks... And yes! So glad no one was hurt!
If I can remember, I will update! If someone comments between now & spring, it'll remind me, lol (hint, hint to the comment readers 😉). I need to weed in-between my Day Lillies, but as big as the leaves are, I'm afraid I might find one down around them. I think I might just go ahead & cut them back since they're done flowering for the season. Then I'll dig them up, separate them & replant them in a bed around our flag pole...my thought is if I can get enough growing at one time I won't have to worry about weeding in-between them, lol. They do duplicate yearly & I believe this is year 5 I've had them, I started out with 2 that my husbands aunt dug up & gave me & now have about 12 or so. Haha, my idea was/is to weedeat them every time they get bad bc hes always sd no to weed killer & wanted them pulled by hand. Too funny 🤣
I'm not sure if I'm following. I used the vinegar straight and diluted the GroundClear concentrate and put both (separately) in my sprayer. Let me know if that doesn't answer your question.
Ah. Yes. This was two years ago so I'm going to venture a guess I didn't rinse it out in between. The bottle was empty, but still wet. I'm not sure how much chemicals mixed with the full gallon of vinegar, but I would think it is fairly diluted with that amount.
Thanks for the tip! I'll be honest, I haven't put any more down and I didn't put any follow up GroundClear either. The lack of rain made this a terrible experiment this year--great for no weeds, but not if you need water to see how well weed killer works. ;-) I'm in the middle of repeating the test with a little soap in the vinegar with this spring's crop of weeds in a different spot in the yard.
I bought some Ortho ground clear at Lowes in Longview TX. It is sorriest weed killer. Weeds come back in two weeks. You couldn't run fast enough to give that trash. Don't waste money!
Maybe they've "improved" the recipe in the last 4 years. I don't use it anymore--just hand pull nowadays. Funny enough, I know that Lowe's in Longview. I used to own a home there. Right next to Home Depot--I always thought that was strange.
It is! Honestly, I just pulled the weeds and didn't apply any more GroundClear. However, it isn’t isn’t as amazing as it sounds because it hasn't rained more than two light drizzles in the three months since I posted the video. I'm curious to see what happens when the monsoon season really gets started.
@@stellahsgroove It sounds like you used regular vinegar? I'd love to hear how long it keeps the weeds at bay where you are! *fingers crossed for a long time* Not sure if you noticed a recent comment recommending 20% vinegar...that might be worth investigating if the regular doesn't work out.
The 1 year review is up: th-cam.com/video/V66vKASRo0c/w-d-xo.html with a big thanks to Jacob Furnish and his comment below for the next experiment!
The vinegar you need to use is 45 % concentrated vinegar it definitely will do the job

Thanks for sharing! Is the 20% vinegar solution a certain kind of vinegar to be diluted that much?
Super nice video, straight forward and helpful. :D
Thanks! Glad it helped!
I use the Ground Clear full strength. Works better. But of course - not in 15 minutes.

Vinegar makes the soil more acidic. So it needs to get to the roots. And if you wait a couple days and reapply the Vinegar it's more affective.
That makes sense! Thanks for adding it here. I'll have to use that next time.
Very thorough! Thank you!
Pretty good side by side comparison.
Thank you, sir!
Great video thanks for the help
Glad to hear it!
I like ortho the best but it's not sold in calif
Just bought some at Walmart the other day.
That's because your dictators know what you can and can not use. Therefore it's not allowed.
In Canada, get vinegar 20% in Canadian Tire... look for the 'cleaning' version that has the 20%
Thanks for adding this! I'm sure there will be others looking for solutions and the comments soon.
20% vinegar is much, much better
Thanks for the recommendation! I'm definitely going to have to try it out!

Just regular--5% from the grocery store--worked for me. Hope it does the same for you!
