"La Marseillaise" from Casablanca should have been #1! The character Yvonne, the woman shown singing in close-up, along with the character Emil, her real-life husband, and many of the extras in the scene were true-life refugees who had barely escaped France before the Nazis invaded and occupied the country. Casablanca was released at a point during WWII, where it was far from a given that the forces of good would prevail. It just doesn't get more TRULY emotional than that.

My mom can't watch that part. That movie came out not long after her boyfriend (the best she ever had in my opinion) had died from a heart attack. She was still in mourning and I had forgotten how the movie would most likely end (I had seen the Judy Garland version) so I failed to warn her. For weeks after I would hear that song playing and my mom crying from inside her room. I would run in and turn it off. Then hold her. Sidenote, I'm an adult who lives with my mom so I could handle her sadness. David was not perfect but he was perfect for her. I truly miss him.

Diana Ross should have been an honorable mention. Her rendition of the song "Home" is emotional and powerful. For those of you who don't remember it was for the film THE WIZ (1970s remake).
As Long As He Needs Me from Oliver! 1968 Musical performed by Shani Wallis should of been added, her emotional and dramatic performance was so good, she was robbed of an Oscar in my opinion. Also the ending/final scene to the musical Carousel when the cast perfom You'll Never Walk Alone. All the cast voices together sounded amazing. Just a great end to a movie musical.
"Non nobis Domine" from the 1989 production of Shakespeare's "Henry V" with Kenneth Branagh. 35 years later and i get chills every time i watch (and i still watch a lot!)
I believe it was on the musical "Joseph and the amazing ...", cannot remember the name but was the song that the wife of the pharaoh sang when their first son died... remember hearing it in the theatre first time and could not stop my tears... the singer was amazing transmitting the feeling of loss for that little innocent life.
"Evermore" from the live action Beauty and the Beast (2017). I love that the Beast sings it after letting Belle go. It's a very emotional song, as you watch the Beast make his way up the tower stairs, until he comes out onto the balcony of the tower, singing , as the camera turns and you can see Belle in the distance below, riding through the gate, leaving his castle. I get emotional over that scene, cause you know that the Beast's heart is broken.
It's too bad that Emma Watson could have been out-acted by a plank of wood in that movie. I enjoyed Dan's performance but I've never liked Emma in that role. I miss "The Hanging Tree" from "Mockingjay 1". It captures the whole devastating situation yet ingnitrs the fire to fight for freedom. Originally not planned to be sung by Lawrence her emotional performance made it even more impactful.
That "wispy voice" singing Moon River wasn't Audrey Hepburn, unfortunately. She wanted to do it, and even did a filmed version of her doing it, but the studio decided to overdub her. SMH - it's such a pity, because having seen/heard her actually doing it, she should have been allowed to sing it herself.
Audrey Hepburn did sing Moon River in Breakfast at Tiffany's. I think that you're confusing this with My Fair Lady where she thought that her singing was being used, while Marni Nixon's voice was dubbed in
I'll add Cher's 'You Haven't seen the last of me' from Burlesque, and Diana Ross' 'Home' from The Wiz. Madonna's 'You Must Love Me' from Evita is also good.
So proud you included The Edge of Night, it literally had me in tears at the movies. I didn't even like the son, but having his father kill him off (almost), mixed with this song, made me love him and feel sorry for him. My hobbit sung that song!
This is me is one of the many songs that I call my anthems. I was born with a rare genetic disorder that makes me look different, and sometimes I get made fun of because of it. This is me reminds me to be courageous, and not allow people to get to me. Edelweiss is just plain beautiful.
I can tell you there are at least 3 rent songs far more emotional than somewhere over the stupid rainbow. For example. The I'll cover you reprise. Or Goodbye Love. Or even Your Eyes. You like to ignore Rent in videos about music in movies.
I've been reading through all the comments. Your terrific list has accomplished the goal: everyone is remembering those songs, those moments that just rocked the soul. No list like this would be complete without (you know - THAT song) 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
"Audition" won Emma Stone her first Oscar, I can't believe you forgot about that scene! Also honorable mention to the last rendition of "Lost Stars" by Adam Levine in Begin Again
OMG you’re so right! “I Know Where I’ve Been” should have been solidly n this Top Ten and not an honorable mention. Queen Latifah’s delivery and emotion were so visceral and evident. The song breaks me every time. I was born in that era and this song captures all I felt growing up in that time. ✊🏾💙
I'm glad you finally went back as far as 1939, but there were a lot of other pre-60s musicals that should also be here: 'Remember My Forgotten Man', 'Never Going to Dance' 'To Dream the Impossible Dream' but only as Peter O'Toole sang it, likewise 'Wandrin' Star' - the Lee Marvin version. (If you do 'La Marseillaise/Horst Wessel', how about 'Tomorrow Belongs To Me'?)
actually you could/should have gone further back to the 1936 version of SHOWBOAT, with Paul Robeson's 'Ole Man River' and Helen Morgan;s 'Can't Help Loving That Man'
"This is Me" - Not a great song at all and, rather, it is an awful song that is awfully forced, bland, stupid, and hollow. Worse of all, that awful garbage song is full of woke garbage messages.
When I first went to the movies and saw the greatest showman I thought to myself where was this song when I was younger Enfield too short to fat or two light skinned 😢
As much as I love "The Music That Makes Me Dance" (and I do, it's my favorite number in the show), a part of me will always be a little bummed that they didn't add "My Man" to the latest production of "Funny Girl." Maybe it's too difficult to perform at every show. (I'm basing that off of Lea's comments, it's not a knock at Lea or Julie's capabilities), but it still would have been cool to see live.
"This is Me" song from The Greatest Showman = both that song, along with the other songs and that movie were total garbage, bland, awfully forced, hollow and stupid, and less intelligent at the very worse.🗑️🗑️🗑️💩💩🗑️🗑️💩💩🗑️🗑️💩💩🗑️💩💩🗑️💩💩🗑️🗑️💩
A great list, but Edelweiss makes it while Casablanca's rendition of La Marseillaise does not? Not only is the song truly emotional (many of the singers were actual refugees from Europe) but the courage and solidarity represented in the "battle of the anthems" still resonates and applies today. I really do not understand why Ms Mojo loves The Sound of Music so much. It seems to be on so many of its lists. I would suggest "Somewhere" from West Side Story as a worthy entry if you make another list.
My daughter suggests trading Les Mis songs - *Bring Him Home.* From RENT - *I'll Cover You* sung from the heart by Jesse L. Martin From Fiddler on the Roof - Tevye's heart-rending song for his lost daughter, *Chavelah*
Was more moved by entries 10, 9 and 8, would reverse the order of this list, except 'And I am telling you', I'd still keep that in second. The top entry on this list was more whimsical longing; fluttery, and pretty to listen to, but it's kinda weak from an emotional standpoint. 10, 9 and 8 were anthems, and more powerfully evoked the emotions they were trying to portray. 10 was still about longing, but you had the desperation in her voice, plus those elongated strings, a metaphor for being stretched to your limits, like you're on your last wires. 9 is a self love anthem, the pounding percussion behind it resembling a heartbeat, that adrenaline pumping through you as you stand up for yourself. Similarly 8 has that build up of components, as though it's your mind remembering the moments you and you lover shared. The lone vocals symbolize your initial surface memories, like the ones that make you smile, the later accompaniment represent the deeper moments, the ones that remind you of your attachment to them, all culminating in the chorus with the full set of backing instruments, and powerful vocals figuratively and literally stating "And I will always love you"

"This is Me" is not just a song, it's a religion! ♥
I can tell you there are at least 3 rent songs far more emotional than somewhere over the stupid rainbow. For example. The I'll cover you reprise. Or Goodbye Love. Or even Your Eyes. You like to ignore Rent in videos about music in movies.
nice to know I'm not the only one who doesn't care for somewhere over the bloody rainbow.
Agree about the Rent songs, as well
I think that I'll Cover You reprise by Rent: The Movie
The Color Purple 1985 "Maybe God is Tryin' Tell You Somethin' " and "Wind Beneath My Wings" from Beaches both give me the feels
The one song that gets me all the time is "I know where I been" from Hairspray!
I'll Never Love Again from "A Star Is Born"
🎶This is me🎶 Should have won the Oscar. I'm still salty about that.🤨
how is “i know where ive been” not here
OMG you’re so right! “I Know Where I’ve Been” should have been solidly n this Top Ten and not an honorable mention. Queen Latifah’s delivery and emotion were so visceral and evident. The song breaks me every time. I was born in that era and this song captures all I felt growing up in that time. ✊🏾💙
How about Wind Beneath My Wings from Beaches? ;-)
My Man by Barbra Streisand killed me. Also Emma Stone’s audition in La La Land had me having trouble breathing, I was so emotional.
“Empty Chairs and Empty Tables” from Les Miserables always makes me bawl.
bawl
After Jennifer Hudson sang and I tell you I’m not going, the audience spontaneously gave her a standing ovation. I’ve never seen that.
I'm glad you finally went back as far as 1939, but there were a lot of other pre-60s musicals that should also be here: 'Remember My Forgotten Man', 'Never Going to Dance'
'To Dream the Impossible Dream' but only as Peter O'Toole sang it, likewise 'Wandrin' Star' - the Lee Marvin version.
(If you do 'La Marseillaise/Horst Wessel', how about 'Tomorrow Belongs To Me'?)
Jack's Lament from the Nightmare Before Christmas 💀
this is me so uplifting and motivational very inspiring I will always love iconic classic romantic song ever no matter who sings it
Some great choices. Was hoping to see the final song from Coco as that is a proper tear-jerker
actually you could/should have gone further back to the 1936 version of SHOWBOAT, with Paul Robeson's 'Ole Man River' and Helen Morgan;s 'Can't Help Loving That Man'
This is me is a great song
"This is Me" - Not a great song at all and, rather, it is an awful song that is awfully forced, bland, stupid, and hollow. Worse of all, that awful garbage song is full of woke garbage messages.
@@ajpat9620Just like clockwork, here he is pissing his pants about This Is Me again! 🤣🤣🤣
Um, I think the correct answer is Prince signing Purple Rain at the end of the movie.
Casablanca should not have been honorable. Mention, neither should breakfast at tiffany's
“Empty Chairs at Empty Tables” from Les Miserables.
Rent had so many songs that could’ve made this list
This is me. From the Greatest Show Man
"This is Me" song from The Greatest Showman = both that song, along with the other songs and that movie were total garbage, bland, awfully forced, hollow and stupid, and less intelligent at the very worse.🗑️🗑️🗑️💩💩🗑️🗑️💩💩🗑️🗑️💩💩🗑️💩💩🗑️💩💩🗑️🗑️💩
Music. Truly mankind’s greatest creation. It breaks down barriers of race, religion, language and culture like nothing else can.
Mandy Moore performing "Only Hope" from A Walk To Remember (2002).
Waterworks. Every.Time
I love Judy Garland meet me in St. Louis, have yourself a Merry Little Christmas. That's my sister's all-time favorite
Check out Easy to be Hard, from Hair
I think "La Marseillaise" deserves more than just an honorable mention. Jennifer Hudson #1, drowning out Nazis a very close #2.
My daughter suggests trading Les Mis songs - *Bring Him Home.*
From RENT - *I'll Cover You* sung from the heart by Jesse L. Martin
From Fiddler on the Roof - Tevye's heart-rending song for his lost daughter, *Chavelah*
