Here was a guy who was unafraid to step forward and deliver music as he saw and felt it. Today's music industry would never let the likes of him be heard. I'm very thankful for what he's brought into my life for the past 40+ years. A true original who once said "I make music for children and animals". He's with them now. Rest in Peace, Don
R.I.P. Don,,,, you brought sounds into peoples lives that forever changed the breadth and depth of their appreciation of music. Your records will never grow old.
Mojave, a more desolate and inhospitable place doesn't exist in the US. I drove thru it and that was enough, can't imagine living there. More power to ya Don. Thanks for uploading this, love Beefheart.
"desolate and inhospitable"? Ever been to Orange County? Seriously I live in the Mojave, when a person like you gets heatstroke or has a car breakdown and no cash its the weirdos like us who help your elitist ass.
I spent 12 hours with the "Captain Don" in Lancaster back in the 80's, as he and my brother shared a great music interest. Loved his constant doodling.I made a block print for him inspired from his "Safe as Milk" album. Don let me know if you need another copy. Loved that sticker that came in the album with the funny baby on it back in the late 60's.
I was at Lancaster Uni 71-74 and there were a lot of underground bands on there at that time. I don't remember him visiting Lancaster but we certainly saw him a few times ,,,, Liverpool. Manchester and Bickershawe. I think. What brought him to Lancaster?
Safe As Milk fanzine was punk fanzine from london rather than liverpool - i know cos i ran it with friends. and we definitely named it after the fantastic first album
RIP Capt. Beefheart, the only music that frightened me. One evening in 1970, while navigating through a fairly heavy trip, Capt. Beefheart came on the stereo. It scared the shit out of me. When I wasn't tripping, then I really discovered his music.
Another underrated talent is XTC. It's about time a proper doc was made on them. Andy Partridge of the group was a huge Beefhaert fan btw. They eventually recorded a cover of Beefheart's "Ella Guru" in the late 80's for a Beefheart tribute album.
Sun , zoom , spark . Sun zoom , spark. First saw him at the Albert Hall in London on his Troutmask Replica tour and the MC was of course John Peel who first introduced him to baffled listeners on his radio show. He said that night . " This is a concert to tell your grandchildren about " . How right he was . God bless them both .
Dons music changed my outlook on music and had has exerted a primal influence upon my own compositions. Much has been said about how much of it was his music and how much was the other guys, but that's immaterial. When the 'other guys' were on their own (listen to Mallard) they were a pale imitation. Don & his influence was the keystone that held it all together. Haven't heard any new music from him for 30 years but I'll miss him anyway. He was too much for his mirror. RIP Don
How can I thank you enough for uploading this? Holy fuckin mojo, but do I ever love the Captain! Always have, always will. Talk about a man who charted his own course... Thanks, brother.
I wish the Beeb could make this an official DVD, though. It's too good to be a bootleg evergreen, it should be available to more people and in top Q. Also would be a nice gesture to the mc, the late but certainly GREAT John Peel, who also was a friend of his.
Quiet interesting material...great to see FZ...great googelymoogely...really dig your work and everlasting voice Don van Vliet...without your music and artwork live's just an apeshit...blues for centuries to come...god bless you Don💪👍💪
Oh no! Not another one of my youth idols who passed away. Very sad news. I see a lot of artist that I liked disapear years after years from the last decade (Piggy, James Gurley, Dickie Peterson, Ron Asheton, John Entwistle . I think that the Captain gone for a great gig with his long time friend and one of my all times biggest idol, Frank Zappa. I going to listen to Bongo Fury album right now. A must to celebrate the memory of the Captain... and drink a beer.
I've been filming & collecting shows for 18yrs and have been recently converting everything to DVD. I have this documentary and a ton of other BEEFHEART footage that i've just compiled onto a few DVD's... Let me know if anyone's interested...
If you like the Captain then you will like John French's new book - 'Through the Eyes of Magic'. At nearly 900 pages it documents an incredible story. (French is Drumbo - the Magic Band drummer for many years). I was lucky to see Beefheart live in 1980 in London. His stuff still sounds fantastic.
It's a demo from the early Safe as Milk sessions. There was a guy that uploaded this and some other tracks (different takes of Electricity et al) on here a while back but they got removed. As far as I know it hasn't been released officially.
@PaperTreeMusic I just found out who it was haha! It is Captain Beefheart doing a Howlin Wolf cover called " Somebody in my home!" It was an out take for Safe As Milk. Such a damn funky tune!!!
I really enjoy some of The Captain's music, mostly his early "Safe As Milk" stuff where you could truly hear his blues influences. Sadly though, almost everything "Troutfish Replica" and after, spare about three songs, was just a little too experimental and avant-garde for my taste, which is unfortunate really because he had a tremendous blues voice for a white man.
Its really nice the way you put that. A lot of people and people's opinions nowadays are that something sucks or is bad. You're recognizing the type of music, saying your taste don't align and that it's not for you.
@MapsOfJupiter It's called "Somebody In My Home", I have a copy of it on the Revenant Records "Grow Fins" 3 volume Beefheart rarities album...it's from 1965 and, I believe, is an original Magic Band composition...but I'll have to check the liner notes, I might be wrong!
Don't know him personally of course, but according to official records, he's still alive. His MS is bad enough that he stopped painting about a decade ago. His work is still exhibited, collected and commands high prices.
I'm not sure if I heard him say it or I'd read that he'd said it in an interview. Either way it works. I do know that he was a great lover of animals. He influenced so many musicians in an array that runs from The B52's to Tom Waits. He'll not soon be forgotten.
ad me to the thanks for this list. never would have learned so much I KNOW when I was like 15 and living in the san fernado valley? I saw Don at a grocery store and was like huh? a groundbnreaker for sure back then!
@christaylorwashere oh well, better late than never...A lifelong fan myself(I'm 50)It has been a pleasure listening to and meeting the man on several occasions.
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME THE NAME OF THE SONG THAT STARTS AT 4.59???? Sorry for the caps, I just really really want to know. It just hit me straight away. Sounds a bit like a tamer Howlin' Wolf( maybe even a younger Howlin Wolf?), and it's so damn catchy....

I've seen Phish, Black Sabbath, Radiohead, Stevie Wonder, Pearl Jam, etc.
I'd trade it all to see a killin' 3 hour set from Beefheart. Truth.
R.I.P. Don,,,, you brought sounds into peoples lives that forever changed the breadth and depth of their appreciation of music. Your records will never grow old.
RIP. I wish i could have met you in person, but it was your time.

Zappa and now Beefheart? It's the end of an era.
Gonna miss you bro...

@@mikelake6750 Lancaster, California. It was the town where Beefheart and Zappa grew up.
@@sardonicus76 Thanks....that makes more sense doesn't it! Thanks.
Same here. I first heard Tropical Hotdog Night when I was about 8, I loved it then and I love it now!
Love Tropical Hotdog
What about Mirror Man?
I love this documentary. From the music score to Zappa, to the wonderful John Peel voice over. Naturally, the star is The Captain.
Safe As Milk fanzine was punk fanzine from london rather than liverpool - i know cos i ran it with friends.

what a true treasure to have this comprehensive doc of Don's magical trip thru sound space and the living
Another underrated talent is XTC. It's about time a proper doc was made on them. Andy Partridge of the group was a huge Beefhaert fan btw. They eventually recorded a cover of Beefheart's "Ella Guru" in the late 80's for a Beefheart tribute album.
They're still waiting on Nigel.
Thanks for this. Someday music will resemble his, but now we wait for the world to catch up. This goes for Zappa, too.
I havent been able to stop watching this. thank you very much whoever put this up.
thanks dude, it's nice to be able to give (a little) something back! ;^)

C'est juste le capitaine beefhart ....ol,!!??
RIP ... goodbye & thank you for the unbelievable music.
I reckon Beefhearts 1967 "Safe as Milk" album was up there with Sgt Peppers, Pet Sounds and Pink Floyds Piper at the Gates if not better...
R.I.P. and thank you.
You nourished many minds.
The earth will be all the better for having received your remains.
200 years have gone kapute
ahh, but we have been astute
thanks for posting this, Bongo Fury is an incredible collaboration between Zappa & Beefheart
imagine a Captain Beefheart movie with Josh Brolin as the Captain, it could happen
I bet you forgot you made this comment after like an hour of posting it but yet some random kid from Jamaica is reading it 10 years later.
My hero. Been into him ever since I was a teen. Weird. No one knew about him back then.
the thing i find compelling about beefheart was his total fearlessness....even in a time of expanding musical boundaries (the '60's) he stood out.
Thanks for posting this. It is an amazing document of this genuis!
Thanks for posting this great documentary!

I always come back full circle to the Captian! RIP brother.

I loved this. I learned so much about him and the way this was produced was perfect.
Watched so many times ☝️☝‼️‼️🏆🏆👍🏻👍🏻
Heard the Captain live in Chicago a few times, at the Aragon, and the Quiet Night. Very high music.
......I saw Nazareth at the Aragon ball room ! 1979 .
@PaperTreeMusic I just found out who it was haha!
It is Captain Beefheart doing a Howlin Wolf cover called " Somebody in my home!" It was an out take for Safe As Milk.
Such a damn funky tune!!!

I'm glad, because I adore that album, Bluejeans and Moonbeams (the song) breaks my heart.
People hate that record. I liked it when I had a cassette of it and didn't know it was considered the worst Beefheart album
Farewell to an incredible legend.

did anyone else think of suicidal tendencies - institutionalized when zappa says he would 'scream at his mother to get him a pepsi'
I was listening to that song and I heard the Pepsi phrase and thought about STs
lol.... 6 years ago
They couldn’t have found a more appropriate narrator if they tried. Peel was absolutely bonkers for Beefheart.
hear hear well said......totally agree with you!
This is frickin' awesome
Don't know him personally of course, but according to official records, he's still alive.
His MS is bad enough that he stopped painting about a decade ago. His work is still exhibited, collected and commands high prices.
@ABOSS302 Loved all your Friday concerts at the AV Fairgrounds that the Cordials put on.
This music is forever - G R E A T !!!
God he's gorgeous and I love his voice
First song is Howlin' Wolf's "Running Shoes" remade...

Oooooooo oh im guessing its Ry Cooder playing slide?
I'M INTERESTED! I'm currently (trying to) writing an essay on the significance of Trout Mask Replica. Any footage would be of great help.
sublime sublime sublime. sure nuff and yes i do, perfect.
@ManilaSyndicate Oh it only takes us about 30 years. I don't think FZ is ever going to get the recognition he deserves. He was too good.
I haven't heard the album trout yet
The song is "Somebody in my Home" aka "Somebody Walkin in my Home" before I forget.
@justatesttocifitwork It is indeed, and Beefheart's version is available on the Grow Fins boxset issued over 5 years ago

Also have a vinyl copy of Lick My Decals Off, Baby.
And now he is gone (12/17/2010) R.I.P. Mr. Van Vliet...
RIP, Don van Vliet, a bad influence on me since 1965... :-)
Quietly the rain played down on last of Captain Beefheart's ashes
CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME THE NAME OF THE SONG THAT STARTS AT 4.59????
Sorry for the caps, I just really really want to know. It just hit me straight away. Sounds a bit like a tamer Howlin' Wolf( maybe even a younger Howlin Wolf?), and it's so damn catchy....
@WavyGravy22
Well, Trout Mask Replica is something you either love or hate. I personally think it is awsome, years ahead of its time.
He sounds really close to the old blues musicians
There, but for the magic band he went…fast and bulbous all the way…whee!
I wish more kids my age were into the Captain...(Hell I got into the Captain at the age of 14, two years ago)
Hey, I'm 14 now and I love the captain!
how u doin these days man
Should I bother getting the unconditionally guranteed album? I have all the rest.
