I worked there in early 1970s. It was the RRE then (Royal Radar Establishment) I worked on some secret electronic detection equipment for use in N.Ireland and then infra Red Cameras. Certainly no weird alien / chemical stuff going on back then... 😜

I cant believe you managed to get in the server room. I used to work there as a contractor looking after the Denco cooling units in that room about 15yr ago that particular room was actually police special branch data centre and was very hush hush I had to be escorted everywhere and they used to sit with me while I worked on the units ..great video chaps brought back some memories

    Brilliant Video.
    I'm an electrical engineer.
That whole site reminds me massively of a different research / production Site I helped decommission in the early 2000's ...the air enters top down through HEPA filters in the big labs with primary course filters before the HEPA filters ...I made a bloody fortune from the gear ...Dove bid didn't have a clue how to sell most of the stuff ...a lot went unsold so I took it all ...of course with permission from the owners they had a dead line to clear the site and didn't care where it all went ..it just had to go quickly.
The yellow coated glass is for Photo sensitive materials the whole area would have been under yellow light ...these facilities are often used for Photo-lithography for semiconductor production / research or to prevent photo sensitive chemicals from degrading.
The 'Time Machine' you saw is an early remote machine for mixing chemicals / gasses .. used in case the reaction liberates dangerous substances or the reaction progresses a bit quicker than intended.
Dichroic glass is made to reflect long wavelength light (IR aka heat) back into the source and only let the visible light or wanted wavelengths through ...its was commonly used in ordinary 50 GU10 lamps .
You are totally correct about the pressure differential in the labs the 'clean' labs that didn't house any thing dangerous would have been kept at a positive pressure compared to the rest of the building so they didn't get contaminated in the event of a minor breach ...the labs containing dangerous substances would have been kept at a lower pressure than the rest of the building to stop the rest of the building getting contaminated in the event of a minor breach.
I'm amazed how much gear they've left there to 'rot'
    keep up the exploring ...

    • @mattd8622
      @mattd8622 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Nice answer. The dichromic glass is actually a UV mirror, designed to reflect predominatly UV while letting other wavelengths through. The glass bulb in the same cabinet is indeed an arc lamp, but a UV one containing mercury vapour... if this breaks the residues will be toxic. Naughty of them to leave it around. These and the laser and camera look like spares for the black equipment you walked past which is a really ancient example of a 'stepper' used for patterning microchips. This is done by shining UV through a mask onto a thin layer of UV sensitive plastic. It works like a microscope in reverse, taking a large image and projecting it small with a very intense light. No other UV light is allowed in the room - if you remove UV from 'White' light you get yellow, so any filter removing blue looks yellow. If you had looked up there would probably have been yellow light bulbs in the ceiling. The mesh in the windows provides electrical screening between rooms, other types of patterning equipment can be sensitive to stray RF.
      Sorry, 25years in the industry....

So much for having a productive morning. That was a great explore. Such a diverse use of military science development and research. The "bunker" development and display areas just go to show what is hidden is so many newer underground bunkers that are probably mostly still active and in use storing much of the other tech/biotech that is seen in the lab buildings.

This was originally the site of RSRE, the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment. During WW2 it is where radar was developed and weaponised. It was later called DRA, the Defence Research Establishment and later DERA, the Defence Evaluation and Research Establishment before it was sold to QinetiQ. For years, up until the late 1980’s, a large spinning white radar dish at RSRE was a landmark in Malvern and you would often see military vehicles on the top of the Worcestershire Beacon sending signals back down to the base.

1:44:35 the big green box from RAF Waddington is a mobile server rack making it easy to transport whole parts of operation centers for use with the added protection of the flight case. They can usually stay wired up inside the box and require minimal plugging in on site. All the good stuff has been removed presumably by MoD just like the rest of the place :) the little monitor keyboard pullout is usually for maintainance of the server itself and not always to use the equiptment at hand.

    Just an FYI really,
As Steve said "D.E.R.A. refers to "The Defence Evaluation and Research Agency and was a part of the UK Ministry of Defence between 1995 and 2 July 2001. At the time it was the United Kingdom's largest science and technology organisation. It was regarded by its official history as 'a jewel in the crown' of both government and industry." "
All true, also, it was a massive earner for the treasury as we didn't only work for UK MoD but also contracted to many overseas governments and agencies. (I say we because of course at the time it was publically owned)
2001 saw a change in the data protection act which made it possible / easier for any person or organisation to deliver FOI & SAR requests so it was deemed necessary to privatise DERA into QuinetiQ / Cobham / Serco Defence and a few others as private companies have no obligation to reply to said requests.
The second and more important reason was of course that many of the above named companies had been heavily invested in by 'people in the know' and now became a perfect vehicle for transferring billions of £s out of the public purse and into the private sector (some say via off shore accounts, I couldn't possibly comment)
As with all things that seem a bit odd / shady, just follow the money, you'll get your answers ;o)
    Great Vid btw ;o)

      @MrAvant123 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

This is very true - as the cold war wound down the Government/MOD had a lot of assets it either wanted tio get rid of or to run a lot cheaper. There were many establishments for example RAE Farnborough and its outstations which became part of Quinetiq -- and the fact is that these assets were sold to Quinetiq for a song and the 'old boys club' that bought them made more than a fortune from the government purse..

WOW, so cool to see a true SCIF setup like that. The war room as you called it was setup as a top secret enclave. I wish i could have seen this while it was active. The vault doors and the massive attention to EM (Tempest) and Sound suppression is a dead giveaway to a top secret enclave. And that's no test bunker, its the real deal. Ive seen near identical setups here in the US. Ive never seen one decomissioned like that and just left unguarded. Thats a shit ton of money invested in that one building and the sheer scope of having to certify and commission that SCIF must have been enormous. Awesome video guys

Serco and QinetiQ are supposedly owned by the Crown. They say they aren't and they are public so have stockholders but the Crown has it's fingers in many pies via anonymous trusts so they probably do. Like when land or buildings go unclaimed or get stolen via the State, everything defaults back to the Crown.

another great video keep up the good work. I have a couple of questions for you I hope you can find time to answer as I know you are a busy explorer first are the booties you got for your dog any good like you I am often in old buildings where there is a lot of broken glass and would like to get something to protect her feet, and the second question is I am guessing you do a lot of research for your explors and a lot of these large government bunkers have been decommissioned and abandoned but my theory is that they are happy for people to see these old cold war bunkers because there has been a program of building deep underground in remote locations lets say maybe places like the remote northwest coast of Scotland and because of their remoteness and depth and modern tech they would survive a nuclear or biological or chemical attack and of course they would have the most up to date protection against a EMP burst i would love your thoughts on this. regards paul

1:33:54, the first office on your left - I was in that office for about 12 months. I worked at QinetiQ Malvern for 10 years, between 1998 and 2008. The plastic glass tunnel that links the two buildings looks in better condition now than when I was there. I also worked in D Building an old single story WW2 MoD style building, and then also P building (70s style red brick building) which I think has now been demolished. Finally I worked in Alan Turing building which was fairly new in 2008 and that building and Bernard Lovell building are still up as I drove past the QinetiQ site today. I'm shocked that they've knocked down all the old buildings.

I liked how you looked at the artefacts which revealed the back story of the place, the workers and real people who were there, what they did. The others were mostly f***ng around on their mobile phones, moaning about youtube and making up shite stories. :D

Such a waste. These companies are obviously making far to much money. The amount of plant, electrical and lab equipment abandoned is just criminal. Makes me sick...

    Cracking job!
Is it just me or did I miss them, considering they are visually demolishing the place with the skips etc there, how come I didn’t see any plant on site? Not one machine...

1:15:00 The yellow reinforced observation windows could be leaded glass for protection from radiation. Also, the 'lathe' shown earlier may be a machine used to cut paper thin samples of tissue/bone. Not sure if anyone had mentioned these before but I was dying to know myself. Everything looks kind of vintage (state of the art for it's time, I'm sure), possibly early cancer treatment or nuclear medicine research.
What looks a little sus to me is the reinforcement on those observation windows... They were particularly worried about someone breaking through as you don't see this kind reinforcement on other leaded glass lab windows when searching around. Maybe it's because it's vintage and they didn't have the 'bullet proof' glass and polymers of today. Or maybe they were afraid of 'patients' or test subjects, or Greta Thunberg activist psychopaths breaking through and poisoning everyone. Who knows...

Militairy waste and polution in the world is unleveled, and the governments and climate idiots keep on preaching the general public on how we should be ashamed driving a car or taking the plane. Great vid!

Those old school "generic" labs, with the fumehoods, were the kind I worked in throughout my chemistry degree. It would explain all of those filters you saw.

I think you'll find the rooms with the holed floors, that filtered (clean, no dust etc) air is blown form the ceiling and flows through the floor (laminair air flow) and is sucked away, filtered and the whole starts again. The chemical enclosures are wet benches with pull down anti-splash shields, anything real nasty would be in sealed enclosures with glove ports etc.

It's a boring answer, but every building on the old disused part (with a few exceptions) had a letter. The 'office' building this is attached to was E building, EX was taken by another extension and this made a 'T' shape on the end.... plus it was easy to remember where the little blue men were (green is just government propaganda)
