Building a Step Down out of Rock Slabs

  • We're are building the last features on Toad's Road before winter comes. Tom Lespequeur is back once again to help us along with the project. Tom was one of the head Builders at Highland Mountain Bike Park a has a wealth of knowledge. Building around this time of year gets very tricky as it constantly rains and takes a while to drain. We had many rainy days and even a snow storm.

    For those in the northeast, I know it got super nice out after this video was released. Given the trends I anticipated crappy weather and have already committed to making a different video and will be focusing on that. Maybe if it's still nice by the time it's released I'll try to get another in but there's a good chance we'll have snow by then.

    Thanks for showing what it takes to do these builds. If anyone else is like me, you see the potential for trails EVERYWHERE!!! You can't just jump in and start digging. Especially if it isn't your land. This shows the massive amount of work that goes into trail building. Such a reality check. It's good to dream but know there is hard work involved.

    Well you have uncovered a hidden obsession I have with excavators. I have seen them sitting next to trails but never seen them being used until your videos and it is amazing. Slick trick scoring the rock and then breaking. That gave me an idea, I just upgraded generator to whole house generator and would love to donate 6.2kw generator to your tools. Could run compressor and air tools. I’m in Hinesburg.

    Your videos are awesome and keep getting better and better!
    Please do not make them any shorter! 15 mins is ace, longer even... That's my one gripe with Berm Peak, Seth only does 10 mins... So thank you 🙏 because I like them this way and without tons of editing... You know 😊

    • @SkillsWithPhil
      @SkillsWithPhil  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I try to cut them down as much as possible without sacrificing the cohesive story. The shorter they are, the harder they are if I'm being honest. 15-18mins is what I've found to be the sweet spot so that's good to know

    • @herculesmclovin
      @herculesmclovin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SkillsWithPhil thanks for the reply.. Yeah, I bet a lot goes into the editing with regards to the trimming, music and transitions etc, which you are clearly getting better at 👍 the preload dialog to the videos content helps with knowing what we are in for.
      It's the slight uncut and humanness to your videos that give you the edge... It tells the unspoken story of you that's nice to see and (I believe) critical to having people stick around 😊
      Can you imagine going all commercial and perfectly spoken and edited in all your videos... Nahh, it'd lose its appeal completely!

    If you need to use parts of the trail to carry speed to find out what to build next but it’s to wet, get a few pieces of plywood and set them in the damp spots. It will give you a hard surface to help you temporarily use it. I really am liking your building ideas 👍🏻

    Pro Tip: when using drainage pipes, surround with crushed rock or gravel before piling with dirt. Keeps some of the weight/pressure off and provides a stronger base which helps overall drainage (a lot of times it'll say in the middle and water won't flow properly).

    Pro tip for future drainage pipe installation, get yourself some pee-gravel to pack around the pipe prior to placing your clay/dirt over it....it’s called a French drain and it gives the perforated pipe a filter of sorts, and allows the water to enter the pipe more freely since the dirt can’t pack the pipe holes
