I brought the classic honey burst.. what a guitar, absolutely stunning and amazing quality, pictures of this guitar just don't it justice. When I saw it in the guitar shop and the guy took it out the box the first thing I said was WOW just flipping WOW ..turns out it's the best guitar I own
I am 63 years old recently retired and my wife recently passed away so with all the spare time I have I decided to pick up the guitar again after not really playing for over 30 years so I picked up a Epiphone 50’s Les Paul standard gold top and honestly I am shocked at just how good it is the feel the fit and finish is shockingly good 😳 I see a ton of videos claiming the quality control could be better but I have zero complaints !!!
The Honey Burst "Classic" has a feature in addition to coil splitting that is not mentioned. Pull up on the tone pot for neck while you are in the middle position and you are now running "out of phase" So it has phase switching. I own this one in the Heritage cherry burst finish. The phase switching is a cool feature. It is a unique tone.
I just got my 50s Epiphone Les Paul standard in vintage sunburst a week ago. No weight relief which I like, immediately swapped out strings for DAddarrio 10-46. Very happy with this new Epi.
These guitars are just awesome for the price you can't beat these new Epiphone guitars they are giving the working musician everything they need in a guitar great quality and payability I own three of them my self one of my Epiphone is all customized it a custom silver burst I put some Billy Gibbons custom shop pearly Gates on it and tone pros and 50s wiring I took out the push pull knobs and went with a 50s style and I put locking tuners and a new USA switch and input Jack my point is you can any thing you want to these guitars to personalize them the to your taste but it seems like these new ones already have everything done to them out of the box thanks for the awesome video.
I gotta tell ya, after all the fuss everyone is making over these new models, this is about the best video I've seen regarding the details, and getting a good look at them. I'm convinced that the 50's Standard is on my horizon. As soon as a local shop gets them in stock.
The 50’s is definitely on my radar for a personal collection piece. The big neck profile is something I’m digging a lot. I’d already have one if it wasn’t for that ‘59 coming this summer. I want to A/B them first (new video?). Glad you enjoyed and thank you!
I really think Gibson have people in place who are going to figure it out! I’ve now playing nearly 30 2020 Gibson’s all of which were incredible. The construction and work detail is perfect, the quality and sounds are what you should expect! But I’ve also been super impressed with the Epiphones in 2020.
Lovely stuff coming from Epiphone, and enjoying the line up really well. I really want to see what they do with the ES-line. Those Uptown Kats were absolutely stellar and seriously considering buying one to review. One small pick: Is it just me or is that 'honeyburst' on the LP classic not really as subtle as a true honey could be? It looks like they've really slapped on the burst colour. Again, only nitpicking lol. Great direction for the company moving forward!
Hey Clay! Thanks for your review. I've watched several review videos about that Epiphone Les Paul Classic model and, unanimously, every reviewer shows their satisfaction with that guitar. I'm definitely thinking about getting that guitar for myself! Thanks again!
Ion Goldtop standard Epiphone I'm going to tell you what hit Rivals a Gibson now you don't sound as good because Gibson's Electronics or better the quality and everything else Rivals it trust me it's a good investment

@@doodlesasap7894 we'll tbh I've been an acoustic player for the longest time mainly playing fingerstyle. This is my first electric guitar with the intent of probably playing slow blues and honestly fingerstyle as well. It was beautiful to hold and play and has got so many tones to choose from. I definitely thought it was worth it. The only thing was that it could have been set up a little better but that can be adjusted.
@@claytonjones705 Thank YOU! Really looking forward to see the Goldtop/metalic gold finish top. They've finally done it in 50s style ♥ now i'm stuck between 60's iced tea & 50's goldtop :( can't decide which one to pick.
I ended up bringing home a Vintage burst 50s Standard... long tenon and 50s wiring! Kind of just getting myself pumped up for the ‘59 though. I’m really really looking forward to that.
My old Bassist just got one of these for his son. He couldn't get over the quality. I told him, "Now you know what I know"!!!lol I just ordered a '59 a few days ago. I got it from Zzounds because they have an exclusive finish option that no one else has..."Southern Fade". The CTS pots in the Inspired by Gibson line have coarse (18) splined shafts. I have a new Inspired by Gibson SG and a 2019 Sheraton, both have the coarse splines. My USA Gibson LP has the fine (24) splines. So if ya wanna put different knobs on, order the knobs for imported pots.
I've got an "05" ELP Classic red quilted top I bought off of Zim's guitars, It was sold brand new without a pick card I haven't seen one yet, I'm glad it doesn't have a pick card I'm just wondering why they made it without one !
I have been checking out these new Epiphones and considering to purchase one, I really like the new Custom model in alpine white but it does not have the Maple cap, it's just a solid Mahogany body (carved top) and my concern is that it will be too dark sounding and won't have the pop that the Maple cap gives it. Epiphone is really stepping their game up with these new editions and I just hope their QC meets all expectations. That being said, I did just watch a review of the new Gold Top model and well the QC department missed the boat on that one. 11 frets were too high and the reviewer had to actually dress the frets before he could play it and give his full review. After he did this, the guitar sounded great and he said he absolutely loved it. That was the YT channel, "Lucas Fowler" in case anyone is interested in watching that video.
Just got the Les Paul Classic Worn in Cherry Sunburst. Unboxed it and played it for my friend over some joints and we agreed that burst is gorgeous and the guitar sounds good. Good way to spend a friday :)
Hey Clay, great explainer on these guitars. I'm looking at a 60s standard lefthander in Bourbon Burst myself. By the way, I LOVE your accent. What part of the States are you from?

I just received a Tuxedo Custom LP, Epiphone. I compared it to my 85 Custom LP, Gibson. Close inspection I find the Tuxedo fit and finish ;as well as initial setup as received, and very happy with the craftsmanship of the Epi. Great guitar and very happy with the purchase. The pickups are great, Probucker. Looks like Epiphone has picked up the slack of the horror years of Gibson, which they obviously have a long way to go.
Keith Fields did you get the new 2020 Epiphone Les Paul custom? How is the neck profile on it? Is it more 60s or 50s profile? I’ve been eyeing one myself. I like the changes Epiphone has made!
JP Huh . I believe it is a 2019 , th eneck is the slim taper D and seems fine. I like all neck thickness and profile styles and don’t mind playing any of them. I tried a guitar at a shop and found the sound was great. I wanted a pro model for the Peter Green hum bucker phase inversion option. Lately I’ve been adjusting he height of the Pickups for changes in tone. So far I’m liking the distance from strings to be furthered than closer. Still enjoying the purchase. Checked all measurements according to Stew Mak standards and all was well.
i prefer the pau ferro, because every single guitar has rosewood since the caveman days....its nice that rosewood now has limited stock, it gives the other woods a time to shine....the pau ferro has really nice wood grain. i have a gibby with rosewood, its really nice, but so is the epiphone goth with pau ferro...beauty.
I own a Gibson les Paul standard 50s and my friend brought me his epiphone and I honestly felt like a fool for spending so much on my guitar when his is the exact same for such a great price
Nice review! I emailed Gibson directly to ask if the 60's model also had the long neck tenon, and the (crabby, rude) Gibson employee informed me that, no, only the 50's Standard is sporting that feature. For what it's worth.....
@@braciole7667 Exactly! I don't know why they're so pissed off, but they all seem to have a seriously bad attitude. After spending THOUSANDS on a guitar, you'd expect a little better.
I emailed them about whether the Epiphone Les Paul Standard Plus Top PRO has an actual maple cap under the veneer and I got a fast, polite and straight answer!!! My mom accuses me of getting attitudes in text messages sometimes. Unless it's a blatantly obvious F.U., I don't see how you can assign an attitude to written words. Hopefully they were just busy and giving short, concise answers to as many questions as possible. But probably not because people suck... 😕 BTW, the answer I got from customer service was, "Yes! There is indeed a CARVED MAPLE CAP under the veneer". I interpreted the all caps as being definitive as this is a huge debate on LP forums. Most people swear veneer means "veneer only". Nope!!! Not in Epiphone's case!!! 😁😁😁
I'm realizing that none of the new Epiphone Les Paul models show any left handed models on their website and I haven't noticed any for sale, either. Hello, Epiphone?
I've seen it available for pre-order from Thomann Germany. I assume other stores will have it up (soon) too. I'm given to understand they're not actually coming out till sometime in the summer.
Summer is what we are hearing as well! As soon as we get them we will do a video. Likely an unboxing video and a review. That’s the Epi I’m holding out for right now.
This issue is the ananalogus as the FENDER ISSUE A Fender Guitar is a “Screw In neck” vs a “Bolt on neck” mostly because there are no nuts on a Fender neck.
Paul Olsen Thanks Paul, you are correct. Not sure schematically the scheme of the circuit and it’s affect on the flow of current. I believe it has something to do with the reversing of polarity of the magnets in the humbuckers.Peter Greene was the first to use the idea. It does provide a pleasing sound.
I saw one in a video that was supposed to be Cherryburst and it looked like it had a red ring painted around the outside of the fucking guitar with no color in the middle, just natural wood. 😕
Marc Ludemann Yes, but. They are made in an Epiphone factory. They aren’t subcontracted to Wu Fong’s Noodle, Printer and Guitar factory, so the American guy running the place has the last word on quality control. And from what I can tell, he’s taking it very seriously.
I'm sceptical about Epiphone's honesty about the woods used in some of the older models I have a epiphone les paul custom Bjorn Gelotte and it's supposed to be Ebony fingerboard but after playing for a month or so I still have a black residue on my fingers 🤔 could it be dyed? Thats a question I have.
Yep, they bullshit, regularly about specs... I bought a 2018, epiphone, es335, pro. Epiphone website said neck was mahogany, it wasn’t, it was okoume, completely different wood, often used for building, outhouses, in South America 😡
Johnny Gonzales : I’m confused, firstly you talked about body thickness, now you’re taking about wood quality? What do you mean? Gibson body is thicker? Maple cap is thicker? Combined mahogany and maple is thicker? I’m interested to know, as I may order an epiphone, 2020 Les Paul
@@bobbillnolan7644 the whole body is thicker combined with the mahogany and maple but the maple on the Epiphone is a veneer it's just a little better than a Chinese built guitar which is called a Chibson but if you want a more affordable Les Paul the Epiphone is the way to go my friend have fun playing😜
Johnny Gonzales : epiphone Les Paul maple caps, are plain, ugly piece of maple, with thin, pretty veneer on top, I’m not sure they are thinner, admittedly, Gibson, maple caps are real , one piece maple, usually flame AA , AAA etc...
Indian laurel is also known as Indian Rosewood. There is absolutely zero evidence of any sonic differences between Indian laurel and plain old Rosewood.. The only certainty is personal preferences in looks. I've seen beautiful Indian Laurel fretboards and beautiful Rosewood as well as not so beautiful in both. In fact, Indian Rosewood or Indian Laurel was more common on boutique guitars....The Rosewood has been heavily regulated in recent years prompting the Indian Laurel to used in its place.
I bought the purple classic worn. I have to say. The finish is shit, they really cheaped out on the worn series. It’s got some grain pitting that is really odd, because experts say that maple tops are a hard wood and never have grain pitting. Just really strange. Plus on mine it looks like they sprayed at an angle, because where the grain pitting marks are, some of the paint didnt cover it. Plus the tone pots are cheap Chinese smaller ones. I love purple, but also want quality!! I am returning it and getting the classic one he shows here. Lovely finish and better hardware!
@@donthewatcher8835 - it’s actually a maple top. I think 2-2.5 inches think. I am only complaining about the finish. The wood was not sanded and the paint was light chalky, with some parts of the wood lines with no paint in the line. It wasn’t the quality I was looking for. I returned it and got the same line but instead of classic worn, I got the regular Classic. finish!! It’s the honey burst. Ohhh my gosh it’s a beauty with a killer shine. Just total night & day. $75 more. Lol

Iona Epiphone Les Paul Standard Goldtop I can't find nothing wrong with this from the factory the neck is straight as a board action is pretty good it might be a little high but not too bad quality is a number one I can't find nothing wrong with my guitar I don't Gibson pots and electronics are a little better they are I'm going to tell you what this is the answer to the affordable Gibson guaranteed quality Rivals Gibson my dad bought a SG his old SG 61 model vintage cherry tell you what my Epiphone quality is better
@@danielcho2698 I think the same as well. The SG can pull it off better but man on a Les Paul, I just don't like it. I honestly had no issues with the old headstock.
@@Peepeestorm Personally, I still really want the LP Classic and the SG '61 Maestro Vibrola as I love these new/old Kalamazoo headstocks. But I don't really need them as I got those bases covered. And I think I want to wait until this whole coronavirus thing blows over (condolences to those that have lost loved ones). I'm pretty sure I'm wrong about virus transmission in this instance. But the paranoia in me wants to steer clear for now. Props to Epiphone though for making big strides this year
@@danielcho2698 don't blame you to be honest. I love the revamp of the models, shame there's no left handed models, but idk that headstock just doesn't work for me, at least in videos. I feel like seeing it in person it would look way better.
I'm probably the minority here, but I think this headstock shape is even worse on a Les Paul than the old Epiphone one. This headstock shape is big and works better on bigger body guitars (335's and semiacoustics in general) or Les Paul Customs.
The big headstock that they're using on the hollowbodies as well as the new Vivian Campbell and Tommy Thayer signatures is different than what they're using on the Inspired by Gibson collection, which is the Kalamazoo headstock.
Hey James, you’re absolutely right. But what I meant is on the size of the headstocks. The new one is similar in footprint to the older, and my point is that in my opinion they fit better bigger guitars, sheratons, centurys, dots... Even though I must say that on Les Paul customs I always felt that bigger headstocks go well, maybe because of the binding.
Just bought a 50s Epiphone Les Paul the other day. Cherry Sunburst finish. Beautiful guitar. And, well made too.
Lucky. Cherry sunburst is my fav finish for this kinda guitar along with iced tea

i prefer the pau ferro, because every single guitar has rosewood since the caveman days....its nice that rosewood now has limited stock, it gives the other woods a time to shine....the pau ferro has really nice wood grain. i have a gibby with rosewood, its really nice, but so is the epiphone goth with pau ferro...beauty.
I'm waiting for the 59 to come out and then I want to see if its worth it otherwise I'll get a gibson reissue.
We just did a video on the 59 that we will be posting in the next couple of days. I really liked it!
I own a Gibson les Paul standard 50s and my friend brought me his epiphone and I honestly felt like a fool for spending so much on my guitar when his is the exact same for such a great price
They say Gibson's money is in the craftsmanship, I say bullshit!!!
I'll buy an EXCELLENT sub-thousand dollar guitar and "point it up" on my own!!!
Wheres the Moderns?

Hi, Is there significant weight differnece between 50's & 60's model? Which one is heavier?
Nice review! I emailed Gibson directly to ask if the 60's model also had the long neck tenon, and the (crabby, rude) Gibson employee informed me that, no, only the 50's Standard is sporting that feature. For what it's worth.....
My experience with Gibson customer service is they SUCK! They are extremely rude.
BTW, the answer I got from customer service was,
"Yes! There is indeed a CARVED MAPLE CAP under the veneer".
I interpreted the all caps as being definitive as this is a huge debate on LP forums.
Most people swear veneer means "veneer only".
Nope!!! Not in Epiphone's case!!! 😁😁😁
how heavy is the classic?
Thinking about getting one of the new epiphones. Has anybody bought 1? Which model and what's your opinion?
I'm realizing that none of the new Epiphone Les Paul models show any left handed models on their website and I haven't noticed any for sale, either. Hello, Epiphone?
Can't wait to have a LP Special :3
how do these guitars compare to the plustop pro?
We just posted a video for that today! We go over the differences and similarities. Thanks!
When will the 59 be available to pre order? I’ve been hunting since winter namm videos came out
I've seen it available for pre-order from Thomann Germany. I assume other stores will have it up (soon) too. I'm given to understand they're not actually coming out till sometime in the summer.
Will be out this summer
Andertons have it up for pre order for March and April depending on dark burst or cherry.
The 59' is the best one!
On that Epiphone special run 59 LP (w/ USA pu's) . . . please keep us posted? I heard it will be available for Summer release this May.
Summer is what we are hearing as well! As soon as we get them we will do a video. Likely an unboxing video and a review. That’s the Epi I’m holding out for right now.
@@claytonjones705 . Yep. Me, too. 👍
Hey we’ve done a video we will be posting shortly on the ‘59. We got in 7 as of the video being filmed but sold 5 of them already. Crazy!
Coil "Splitting" not tapping. They're different and they sound different.
Would coil "tapping" make one of these pickups sound more like real single coil pickups - or even P90s - than just impeding the signal?
This issue is the ananalogus as the FENDER ISSUE
A Fender Guitar is a “Screw In neck” vs a “Bolt on neck” mostly because there are no nuts on a Fender neck.
Is that 50s neck like the Jared James signature ?
Very close! Of the ones I’ve held personally, the JJN neck felt a bit bigger in my opinion, but only barely.
Which better? Classic ..50s or 60s?
My pick is probably the 50s because of the neck shape. Classic is the most versatile though.
No custom??
We are working hard in the MME editing lab on a custom SG/Les Paul video we filmed over the weekend!
@@claytonjones705 awesome! Cant wait to watch 👍
Ready to roll! It’s posted to the channel!
If you get one, get one from a store and see it. Some of the bursts are dreadful.
I dont like bursts that much
I saw one in a video that was supposed to be Cherryburst and it looked like it had a red ring painted around the outside of the fucking guitar with no color in the middle, just natural wood. 😕
Are any lefties coming for the 2020 Epiphone lineup?
Not all have cts posts please be careful what information you use for videos
Are they made in China?
Marc Ludemann
Yes, but.
They are made in an Epiphone factory. They aren’t subcontracted to Wu Fong’s Noodle, Printer and Guitar factory, so the American guy running the place has the last word on quality control. And from what I can tell, he’s taking it very seriously.
@@keithjohnston5936 Never buy a chinese Guitar , they made out of Blood!!!
All these different ranges give me target confusion.
Me too man. Difficult to keep track of all this info!
The body on the Gibson is thicker than the Epiphone😜
Errrr..... I don’t think it is ?
@@bobbillnolan7644 I've had both measure them and the Gibson is made with quality wood it has a real maple cap😜
Lovely finish and better hardware!
maple veener thin layer on most models you are supposed to have cts pots in the modern epiphones,
@@donthewatcher8835 - it’s actually a maple top.
$75 more. Lol
@@Keifer-D good for you, play on brother, i got 3 epi customs 2 Lp customs 2020 alpine & 2017 ebony and a 2011 Lp bonamassa goldtop

Oops the purple burst is a Gibson. Forgot to mention that! The others are Fender.
Prices??? Sat through the entire review waiting hear prices. Most important consideration...never mentioned.
Jac Ttanna, Zzounds and other major retailers have these at $599, sans case.
Leonard Smith Thanks for the info. That’s a very good price.

At 7:07 mark the tag on the €piphone LP Classic shows $499.
@@dragan4658 why classic is cheaper than the standards?
He called the 2nd guitar a Gibson
Nashville is better than the old abr
Coil SPLITTING is NOT Coil TAPPING!!!
Dude its clearly a yanny fretboard
Iona Epiphone Les Paul Standard Goldtop I can't find nothing wrong with this from the factory the neck is straight as a board action is pretty good it might be a little high but not too bad quality is a number one I can't find nothing wrong with my guitar I don't Gibson pots and electronics are a little better they are I'm going to tell you what this is the answer to the affordable Gibson guaranteed quality Rivals Gibson my dad bought a SG his old SG 61 model vintage cherry tell you what my Epiphone quality is better
Man, I want to like the new headstock but I just can't. Something about it just doesn't look good in eyes.
I think it looks better on the SGs than the Les Pauls
@@Peepeestorm Yeah! I was surprised they didn't make any left-handed models! Hopefully they fix that soon
How about the actual quality ? This is a love fest to sell product. Every review I've seen most have a lot of fret problems. Suck up video :(
India laurel is rosewood
Hope your not selling that orange to a paying costumer
