  • An explosive report revealed earlier today that six Howard University employees stole more than a million dollars from the school and have now been fired after a whistle-blower exposed the theft on social media, reports NBC.
    Now, Tyrone Hankerson Jr., a former student employee, has been named at the center of the controversy. Hankerson Jr allegedly scammed $429,000 from Howard’s financial aid coffers.

    I worked in the financial aid office as a student worker at Southern University. We didn’t have access to the money or to approve grants. In the financial aid office we were pretty much assistants to the financial aid officers. Someone gave him access or had the amounts approved for him. It was definitely an inside job.

    The reason it didn’t “alert” anyone because some of the higher ups had to be in on it too. A student can’t approve anything, fin aid officers do. A lot of these schools do this type of stuff but their endowments are large enough for them not to make national news. Law students have higher cost of attendance thus are awarded more than an undergrad so that’s probably part of how he was able to snag a ton like that. But again, people above him had to be in on it & best believe they got their cut too. They’re likely the crew who has been fired.

    I hate to say this, but I'm not surprised he was able to funnel so much money. I'm sorry but let's be honest, HBCUs have an unfortunate reputation for mismanagement because there aren't up to date checks and balances in place to prevent such. There are people in roles who have been there for a long time who have subpar knowledge of how this works AND some people who know it SO well that they can manipulate it. Always stealing from Peter to pay Paul. Always jeopardizing accreditations. You would think that by watching other schools struggle, the schools would work to create a structure and stability. Just nuts...!

    I go to Howard university. The president here is completely NEGLIGENT. He is involved as well. This is being placed on Tyrone, but most of the administration and previous administrators and staff steal from the university and it’s very sickening. Right now students are protesting in the Administration Building. They do not plan on leaving until all demands are met. Howard University is completely lack luster when it comes to caring about its students and our well being. Please go to @HURESIST on twitter and read their demands and follow the story. The students here need everyone behind us.

    • @natalies7812
      @natalies7812 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Howard University currently owes me 3,000 dollars and it’s all because of the misallocation and stealing if student funding! I am not the only student. I know people who have scholarships that have gone “missing” and when it’s “found” they aren’t given the amount they are supposed to receive and are forced to pay the university out.

    • @user-zr6jp3on4f
      @user-zr6jp3on4f 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Why don’t you all just transfer out? The best way to resist is to hit them financially where they’d be compelled to make changes. A threat to significantly decrease the enrollment numbers is the best leverage. Consequently, they would have to start actually managing the university.

    • @natalies7812
      @natalies7812 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      E. Armand the problem with the “just transfer” narrative is you don’t know how far along I am, you don’t know if I’m afforded any institutional scholarships that have me there. I am a junior. I have a scholarship attached to this school. I will not “just transfer”. Students don’t just transfer because we love Howard university despite the struggle. We are fighting for ourselves, as well as future students who DESERVE to have adequate housing, who deserve to walk on campus and not fear the rape culture associated with this school, we want them to be able to go to counseling services and get what they need, they shouldn’t have to be bamboozled by administrators and faculty. So no I’m not leaving. I will continue to stay and fight for the changes that’ll make our great university excellent.

      Natalie Smalls My apologies, if you were offended. You are right; I don’t know anything about your particular circumstances-which is why I posted my statement as a question rather than a suggestion. Though, your reply makes me wonder something else: If need and merit-based funding is not very accessible to most students, then are the fortunate few recipients among the most academically gifted and/or economically disadvantaged? If that is the case, would they not be able to secure more generous financial aid packages from comparable-or even better-schools? Moreover, I wonder how much weight is given to administration, ethical, and academic standards when students are evaluating their tertiary education options. I don’t purport to have any viable solutions to Howard’s issues. The entire incident is extremely thought-provoking-especially to someone like me who attended grad school in D.C. and will be starting law school this coming autumn in the DMV.

    I work in financial aid at a PWI. I don't see how he was able to steal that much money. We have to sign a conflict of interest statement yearly that says if we are enrolled in school we cannot touch our account or others that we know. They check to make sure you didn't too. I have seen people fired and written up because of it. We use the same system as Howard and it tracks the funds and won't let you overaward students so he really couldn't have done this by himself. It's a lot into it that I can't type but it doesn't make any sense. All I can say is at least it wasn't federal money that he stole. That's a whole nother can of worms right there.

      I worked at a PWIs FA office too but we never had to sign any conflict of interest forms. We were just notified of not doing touching our own accounts (if u had one) during orientation. I agree, whomever got fired with him were the higher ups who had clearance to make modifications. Because if this was going on for 9 years, this began while he was probably in 9th grade & when he got there whomever had to have brought him on board.

HBCUs have this reputation, that's why some don't exist today due to mismanagement of funds by the powers that be. I work for Purdue University in Financial Aid. Howard uses the same program to award students as we do. From the screenshots of the program, Tyrone definitely had administrative access to over-award the accounts he was pulling money from. No student worker in ANY financial aid office has that kind of access. They just don't! Like you said Dineva, it's not possible to overaward a student. Once a student is awarded over their budget for the school year, something HAS TO BE reduced in order to stay within the cost of attendance. That's just how financial aid works. That's a federal rule that goes across the board. So yea, Tyrone definitely had someone's administrative access.

    • @tojcharles
      @tojcharles 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Federal loans and some scholarships are really the only things that have to be reduced. You can accept as much grant money as you are awarded.

    • @noahanthony7336
      @noahanthony7336 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Charles Morris
      That’s true but still you can’t go over your cost of attendance regardless

    • @tojcharles
      @tojcharles 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not best practice, but some institutions have their own policies because sometimes estimated COA will exceed actual COA. For example, if you're an institution that charges by credit hour instead of a flat tuition, the COA might be generated using 15 credit hours, but if you're approved to take 21, that greatly increases your bill, and therefore you would need more funds. If your EFC is 0 or on the lower end, adjustments could be made in this instances. There are definitely ways to juke the numbers and stay within federal regulation, ESPECIALLY, if you are working hand in hand with student accounts.

    • @noahanthony7336
      @noahanthony7336 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Charles Morris that is true. We only see that usually with student athletes where they are over coa but that’s over by like a couple thousand if that. And that’s only like 5 students where they get a ton of scholarships and other outside aid that puts them over even when they reject their loans smh. Also, what school do you work at?

    • @tojcharles
      @tojcharles 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I work at a research 1 institution in central Alabama where our graduate and professional school enrollment outweighs our undergraduate enrollment and before that, I worked at a smaller institution in the state. Howard law school tuition ALONE is 76k, many GA positions pay like $20/hr*20hrs/week comes out to about another 20 K which they usually stipend out. That 96K before books, lodging, meals, and all of the other things calculated in award amounts so I can see why 100k being awarded to one student would be much of a cause for concern. My institution awarded $219,860,137 last year, 100K is a lot of money to one person but in terms, but on a macro level, 100k is not material. He probably knew the exact amount that would be flagged and stayed right below it. At your institution, what happens to the money that is awarded but never claimed i.e. students who don't decline awards, accept and never show?

  • @bokc

    The actions of Howard's administration (eg, financial aid, housing) is an embarassment to the entire HBCU university. A few weeks ago, the President was exposed for sending dismissive and disrespectful emails to students in response to their concerns. The President needs to go and everyone else in the administration. Did the Auditor's miss this? Howard's President, Tyrone and others may be very well facing state and federal charges. This could even put their accrediation in questions (eg, Morris Brown). I am a HBCU grad; I fell in love with the city I attended college in but not the University. I still go to the city every year to visit old friends and enjoy the city but I have not been back to University campus since graduation nor do I donate money to them. I guess i'm still a bit salty from paying a yearbook fee every year and never recieving one to this date (they where supposedly years behind - so as a Senior you would get you Freshman yearbook). I did not feel respected as a student at the HBCU that I attended, the administration was dismissive of student concerns and led with an air of arrogance that they where doing the students a favor. I believe this is the larger reason of why HBCU grads tend to not be engaged after graduation - it's certainly not because they are not able to. My University charged more than a traditional PWC but offerred less. In the Freshman dorm we had moldy shower curtains for a few months until some girls took them down and put them in the trash. The administration excuse was they where doing their best and the curtains where special order and where on back order - complete BS. Moreover, their was no investment in on campus student life. My 15 year old sister wants to attend Howard. I will support her with whatever choice she but when the time is right, I will share my experience with her so that she can make an informed decision.

    Chiiiiile.....Howard has been stunting for YEARS! The struggle game is on FLEEK (old term, I know, but that’s how bad it is) at that university so in all honesty, I’m not surprised that this is happening. It’s VERY unfortunate and I’m sure it’s occurring at MANY colleges and universities throughout the U.S. Fr fr, it’s a MIRACLE the hospital is still open. Lord knows the doors are slowly closing on that place. Have been the last 20 years tbh. What pisses me off about it is when Homecoming comes around, every celebrity (mainly alumni) is in town. Same for graduation day. However, VERY FEW are giving back. HBCUs need all the help they can get, ESPECIALLY from their alum.

If there are any other people flossing on Instagram that came from a HBCU, they better start cleaning up their social media, cause those visuals of him are really what made people upset. They also need to discuss the 6 who got fired from the Financial Aid office. That's where the true tea lies, LOL!

      KaneneProductions bursaries don’t control fin aid awards. They just disperse funds & are in a totally different office. There are students who actually do get large amounts in scholarships so they would have to individually check each student’s account before dispersing funds. Considering these jobs require government clearance, it is assumed that ethically, that wouldn’t be a concern or necessary because it is time consuming and takes away from the million other things occurring in that office.

I totally agree with you that students shouldn't have access, I don't think student's should have ANY access to any of the main arteries of a college, i.e. Registration, Admissions, Financial Aid because half of them are young and dumb and irresponsible.
