    Appreciate the video... I bought a 2002 Kia for a daughter... will be replacing the timing belt in a few days for the peace of mind... the replacement belt folks say that this is an "interference" style head and valves, so a broken belt WILL bend the valves... you make it look easy... I'm going to replace the water pump while I'm in there, too... might as well...

      I have a 2000 kia Sephia. I got it in 2008 with 194,000 miles on it. It now has 294,000 miles on it. It's been a great little car for my daily driver. My timing belt did break. It bent 2 exhaust valves in the number 1 cylinder. I got the head rebuilt. I did all of the tear down and reinstall of the head, and timing belt kit. But I have not replaced the water pump. As far as I know or can tell it's the original water pump. And I have never had an issue with it or the clutch, or front suspension or rack and pinion . I have replaced 1 engine coil, the radiator, alternator, and the cv axles and in 10 years of ownership I have replaced brake pads and brake shoes... once for brake shoes twice for front brake pads.... It's been a really reliable fun to drive car...

    great video, helped me out this weekend, however two notes: 1) I was having a tough time getting the dipstick off and in fear of damaging it I opted to remove 3 additional bolts to the bracket that gets in the way of the water pump bolts. Also having the AC lines in the car made it that much tighter and harder to move hands and tools around the available space, 2) used a hex key in the the timing belt tensioner pulley to move it far off enough to allow me to slip the new belt on. Otherwise THANKS FOR THE VIDEO especially like the timing pulley tension procedure, saved me hours!

    Thanks for the suggestions of having a good one. I did. Watched your video during a rectal unload this morning in a clockwise fashion. The procedure is recommended in intervals or it could render a trip to the scrap yard would be immenant.. I think my water pump was leaking also during this. May need to get you to check that. The video proved to be quite useful and will start viewing during every deposit. I'm already subscribed and wish I could do it again. Wiill hit ya likers. Dr. Jake out.

    Without that little power tool, [I assume air driven], how long would a job like this take on average using standard tools (sockets and wrenches)? Note: I am considering to buy the exact same power tool that you used (it's small and practical for tight spaces), can you tell me a bit more about it....I mean the make, model, where to buy it, price range.....etc.). Thanks! Great video!!!!!!

    i know this video is old and you may not comment or know the car doctor what motor mount is this 3 right? also the bolt gets torqued to the same as the bolts right the service manual only says one torque spec for it

    The t8d, which is used in this car - is a non interference motor. Also, not necessary to remove the dipstick or the bigger nut on the crank pully.

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      we have learned to never say never when it comes to interference motors. we assume the worst and celebrate the victories.

      The Car Doctor celebrate the victory of a non-interference motor design? Lol. I guess you could celebrate that something did what it was designed to do. Maybe we should celebrate every time our brakes work too.

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Lone Wolf Boy I hope you didn't bend any valves. I'd its a 1.8 DOHC engine I believe it's exactly like what is shown here. Most timing belt kits will include alignment instructions. Hope it has a happy ending.

  • @jordib.9577
    @jordib.9577 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have the same car, same engine, timing belt has gone last week, not a single valve bent, search online, this is a Mazda based engine (BP), you'll see ;)

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes you get lucky and sometimes not but we have found that many "non-interference" engines can bend valves under the right circumstances.

    • @Makennaaaaaa_VR
      @Makennaaaaaa_VR 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      this is a T8 motor,not a BP.

    • @702johnny
      @702johnny 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a T8d motor. Non interference. Is is not a Mazda b series motor. The b series motors were in the older model sephias. They were also non interference motors. Mazda designs, but kia manufactured them.

      for cold weather. Block heater, transmission pan, battery blanket. Standard for northern areas. Not so much here but this one likely came down from Fairbanks area.

    Looks like something I could handle, LOL. What brand torque wrench? I like those led's! :-)

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Thomas EXOVCDS it's a NAPA brand. I think it's a central tool. I really don't like it and want to get a SnapOn to replace. When I'm using the torque angle feature on a Subaru head bolt when I run one of the buttons against anything it changes the torque value and resets the reading which really sucks. The LED lights are super cool however.

    • @702johnny
      @702johnny 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Johan Lau yes, you can remove only the 4 bolts. You would have a harder time getting the pully out though, since the ac lines are in the way.

    • @hardkore360
      @hardkore360 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      johnathan wood true, I removed 2 support bolts on the ac lines and lowered them enough to remove it, that big bolt was just not breaking loose and.kept rotating the gear as I dont have air impact wrench

      +brandon leal It's there to asist in proper adjustment of the timing belt but if done properly you could go without. Just need the right tension on the belt. Thanks for dropping by.

    This is a non-interference engine, so no bent valves if the timing belt snaps.

    • @ThecardoctorTV
      @ThecardoctorTV  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not true. This will bend more valves than you can shake a stick at. But don't tell anyone. 😀

    • @702johnny
      @702johnny 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Car Doctor the t8d is supposed to be a non interference motor, designed after the mazda b series motors.

    • @MichaelJKlassen
      @MichaelJKlassen 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I actually own one of these cars and when the timing belt snaps (premature failure) it bends valves. I got lucky and only had 10 valves that got bent.

    • @702johnny
      @702johnny 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Klassen , you must have a different motor then. The t8d is non-interference. I had one of mine apart, put the motor at top dead center and rotated the cams without anything hitting.
