    This was a show that was so popular from 1977-1985, but as soon as it went off the air, it was soon forgotten. I loved it. It was based off an unpleasantly realistic 1974 movie beforehand set entirely in New Mexico and Arizona about an unhappy working-class housewife widowed from her husband that dies in an accident on the job and she’s broke and moves west. In the movie, Alice is an ordinary woman just trying to put her life back together as a singer, Tommy is a bored and obnoxious 12 year old, Mel is the owner of a highly successful greasy spoon diner who’s wife died from overwork years before, Flo is a brassy loudmouth, and Vera is an eccentric basket case with a dark sense of humor who’s motorcycle riding father drives her to work and from home.

    • @tammylewis2408
      @tammylewis2408 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That and M*A*S*H are the only ones I know that had sitcoms based on movies and were successful. Not an easy feat to turn a dramatic movie into a sitcom. Alice has been shown in reruns over the years on E!, TBS, TNN, IOn, and is currently on LOGO and Antenna TV. In the Alice series pilot, the kid who played Tommy in the movie version (Alfred Lutter) was cast, but after that was recast with Philip McKeon. And Belle was played by Diane Ladd, the original Flo in the movie. Vic Tayback (Mel) was the only one playing the same character in the movie and sitcom.

    • @jondstewart
      @jondstewart ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tammylewis2408I’m late on my response, but thank you! MASH was a somewhat strange and unconventional movie that turned into a successful TV series and Alice sure did. I thought the pill from the movie made a great Tommy for the TV series, but for some strange reason, he was only in the pilot. And I think Diane Ladd would have been a more realistic Flo like the movie, not some hee hee ha ha not a care in the world “kiss my grits” chasing after every other man. And of course Alice went from a codependent country girl from Monterey, Ca. to chirpy Jewish woman from New Jersey.

    I think this was the year CBS 1983-85( One day at a time, Jeffersons, Alice ) was cleaning house similiar to when they did in 1977-78 (Maude, Mary Tyler Moore, Rhona, Carol Burnett).

    The ending of shows like Alice, were endings of eras. People couldn't believe the end was there and they would prepare for the night, like it was a family event. Alice was to myself, and I suspect to many others a kind warm place, where for a while real issues were set aside for a bit. TV in the 70s and 80s was far more then entertainment, it was a family gathering.
    The TV shows of this Era -
    MASH
    Little House on the Prairie
    All in the Family
    Barney Miller

    Interesting how during the flashbacks, no clips of "Belle", (Diana Ladd's character) were shown---I read where Ladd had difficulty with the rest of the cast during production.

      I'm surprised Flo's (Polly Holiday) was shown since Linda Evan felt insecure about her and caused Polly to leave the show. I suppose after years have gone by, Linda felt comfortable enough to show a clip of Flo on the last episode.
