The Tahitians have landed on our shores. You can see them in this video, where Air Tahiti, a premiere outrigger team in Tahiti, greeted local paddlers at NAC, then inspired us with their presence on the water.
Native Tahitians bring a time-honored tradition and culture of outrigger paddling. Tahitians grow up on the water. They know the water, and they know the canoe. They are passionate about the deep-seated connection between the two.
Ancient Polynesians, in large outriggers, or “va’a,” followed the stars to discover new islands. Today, you can follow these stars of paddling as they grace us with their paddling prowess-in race after race, culminating in the Catalina Channel Crossing, September 10. There, Tahiti’s renowned Shell Va’a team will race in an ARE Tahiti V6 Matahina.
Bridging Tahiti’s proud past with a performance-enhanced future, ARE Tahiti has channeled its quest for precision and performance into a canoe that is not only winning races, but also winning the hearts of racers the world over.
Keep your eyes peeled for Tahitians paddling ARE Tahiti V6s or V1s. Although most Tahitians don’t speak English, the only language you really need to know is the language of the va’a.
