- The profound integration of Islam into the cultural and national fabric of the Maldives serves as a pivotal thread connecting the archipelago to the Middle East. The introduction of Islam to the Maldives can be traced back to Muslim traders and wandering religious figures. In 1341, the North African traveler Ibn Battuta, who later served as a judge in the Maldives, attributed the conversion of the then-Buddhist King Koimala to Islam in 1153 to Abu al-Barakat, an Amazigh merchant buried on the main island of Malé.
Having gained full political independence from Britain in 1965 as a constitutional Islamic Sultanate, the Maldives transitioned into a republic three years later. Since independence, Islam has played a central role in Maldivian politics and daily life. The Maldivian constitution, promulgated in 2008, officially designated Islam as the state religion. The country's religious homogeneity is maintained through restrictions on land ownership and citizenship exclusively to Sunni Muslims, as well as the prohibition on proselytizing. The constitution mandates that the president and cabinet ministers be Sunni Muslims, and Maldivian law criminalizes the "criticism of Islam." Consequently, the Maldives asserts itself not only as the world's smallest Muslim country but also as the only self-proclaimed "100% Muslim Nation."
