I don’t know why I was expecting this video to discourage me, because I am a calligraphy beginner but it did the complete opposite. Such a positive and uplifting video.☺️
I’ve been asked to make a menu for a restaurant. I haven’t even finished your basic course yet. So I was strongly doubting. After watching this video, I know I’m not good enough yet because I don’t feel good enough yet.
I literally got goosebumps when I saw Paul Antonio and David Grimes
Man, this really changed my perspective. I guess I always thought there was a magic formula out there that I had to first discover and then figure out how to solve the dang thing. After watching this, I'm realizing that maybe that magic formula doesn't even exist. Maybe there aren't a bunch of tetris boxes that have to fall into place perfectly for me to move forward. Maybe, just maybe, I am ready.
It's been quite a challenge for me to internalize that I may, indeed, actually be a real artist. I constantly doubt myself and my work. But, today is the day I stop all of that, I stop all the negativity, I stop making excuses, I stop procrastinating, I stop saying my work isn't good enough, and I stop being afraid. It's time to put on my big girl panties and get to work. Today, I am going to start putting myself and my work out there. Cause you don't know til ya know. Great video, I am a realistic coloured pencil portrait artist and everyone keeps telling me I should sell my work but I look at work from other similar artists and just say NO WAY I am not good enough. I decided to take the big leap 2 weeks ago and registered a business name and are in the process of getting all my social media sorted out right now, HOWEVER, every minute of every day I am still thinking..."is this a bad idea, am I just going to embarrass myself?" Thank you for this video, I REALLY needed to see and hear this right now and deep down, what each artist said, I would probably say to someone like me. I am selling art for almost 5 years and I still think I am not good enough!!
Thank you so much for this video Becca! ❤❤❤❤ There will always be someone who is better than you at something. So my strive to "be perfect" or "the best" before offering is absolutely ridiculous and it didnt dawn on me how ridiculous until watching this video. ❤
Also, to viewers, you can post a photo of your work in a social media group asking their thoughts. I saw someone post in a parenting group a photo of their creation asking if people thought it was an acceptable gift for a friend. That person got orders for more of the item from complete strangers in the group! So that might be a way to test the waters too.
One day I will get the courage to do so also. Lol

This is great and so true...such good advice 🙏 and I think just as I thought and still do is you have to have this huge portfolio to succeed, if you just have a couple showcasing your work and make something to put out there you can still catch attention.

Wow just found this. I have been doing calligraphy since i was 10. I write every day. Never seen much of a market for it atleast in my area. So dont quit your day job. In todays world you compete with the computer printers and xy plotters. The xy plotters being the toughest to compete with if someone takes the time to program it correctly so it does not look like its machine printed. As far as the time spent actually writing ( pratice if you will). It gets faster to an extent and just feels normal ( as in its just how you write. Like your signature) for the same quality of work. After doing this for the last 42 years i dont really think of calligraphy as a skill per se but more of just something you do that occasionally makes beer money :)

Imposter syndrome is so real! I always look to calligraphers on Instagram for inspiration, but then again I end up comparing my beginner work to their “17 years of experience” work and feel inadequate. But everyone’s got to start somewhere, so I might as well keep putting my art out there! I picked up pointed pen calligraphy a few months ago and honestly took to it like a duck in the water, but I still feel so insecure because I’m new to it. I also recently bought procreate and have been making more digital pieces which is a lot of fun! (PS My IG is @isabel_inks)

Hey Becca! I have been following your videos for calligraphy learning......but cant find HOW TO WRITE UPPER CASE LETTERS IN CALLIGRAPHY !
Please post a video of how to use basic strokes and write letters(a-z) using brush pens for beginners.. :) I hope Yu read this n make one.. it’l be highly useful for many more people like me
