    Was Pervez Musharraf a man of contradictions? A military dictator who twice imposed a state of emergency but also permitted a free press and readily accepted tough interviews? A moderate Muslim who allegedly enjoyed a glass of whisky but also said he was the biggest supporter of the militant LET? The architect of Kargil as Army Chief but also the President who came closer than ever before to a solution of the Kashmir issue? A usurper who’s bloodless coup was popularly welcomed but who then transformed into a despised president who was forced to resign to avoid impeachment? Get the answers from the Editor-in-chief of The Friday Times and the former caretaker chief minister of Pakistan’s Punjab province, Najam Sethi.

    “Risk-taker, bold” are polite words to describe a reckless character who risked lives of his own men to chase ‘a place in history’, then changing tack in hopes of ‘a Nobel Peace Prize’. Ended up as a pitiful figure. Citizens deserve better.

    Musharraf opened up the media space in Pakistan because he saw that the Indian media had helped nationalism/patriotism to surge during the Kargil War.

    • @wkhan5
      @wkhan5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s totally incorrect. He did not need an independent media to achieve such an aim. In fact This aim would have been much easier to achieve with a state controlled media. So It was not done out of some imitation of India. He did it as he was a liberal and he hoped that by appeasing and engaging the media in this manner that they would remain on his side and help prolong his rule

    This interview is more properly the exemplification of what impartial journalism should be. Finally an interview that indeed is a cornerstone of journalistic ethics from the sub-continent, in the past it has always been jingoism, sabre-rattling and incendiary reporting to appease the patriotic masses of both sides. The arguments presented from both venerable journalists were unbiased, balanced, objective, open-minded, avoiding favouring one side over another. The choice of words from the lexicon was impeccable as well. I commend the efforts of ‘The Wire’, Mr Karan Thappar and Mr Najam Sethi to have abided by the highest standards of ethical journalism while presenting their arguments. Media outlets from India , Pakistan and the world should learn such standards this discussion had to offer. It was indeed a breath of fresh air. Touche!

It shows that people from both sides of the subcontinent are lost twins separated "at birth". It's a tragedy that the line was drawn thru the subcontinent especially thru the Punjab.

    Kargil war was not caused by Pak. It was caused by Indian army failing to protect its land. They allowed hundreds of Kms to be taken by Pak without firing a shot so they, sensibly, took it. Smart move that almost succeeded.

    Pakistani economy in 1999 was 65 billion dollars. Under Musharraf, it more than doubled in size, with debt to GDP reducing from 65 percent to 25 percent. So, even if the Americans gave 25 billion dollars, how on earth did it achieve these results? Sethi's maths does not work. The fact is, even before 9/11, Paks main economic indicators were improving. Then after 9/11, as sanctions eased and Pak was able to reschedule it's loans, genuine economic policies resulted in the boosting of Pak economy. Sethi offers gross disinformation.

    Pervez Musharraf was yet another 3rd world leader in a long line of leaders whose mind was shaped by colonial educators to see their own people and culture as subhuman, to see the themselves as the exceptional savior that will forcefully reforge their own society in the image of the great white father.
    An despite all of his successes, the result was a country and society more dysfunctional than ever before.
    History will not be kind to Musharraf, and he knew it. He turned his back on his country, his religion, his supporters, his Army, all for 15 minutes of accolades from the west. That is why he never returned.
    Being a country's leader is hard. You can not reforge existing societies to idealized systems of governance. This is not the mitary where you break down a persons id to reforge it into a automaton. COAS are simply not up to the task of leading Nations.

      Karab thapar is a jewel in journalism in india but I wish you had more like him. Pakistan does have many like him though. Can we say sane for arnab goswami and many alike shouting and raising hysterua, sensationalise and gingoism.?
      Don't get me wrong, Pakistan too has a few bad journalists but Indian media has greater share of yellow journalists.

    Interesting interview, but I ha e a point to guest, why he said pak army was ready to withdraw in Kargil which is not a fact if it is then give ua a proof ( at least it was not in media)
    Second pak never accepted that the intruders are regular army men, pqk said they r Mujahideen and they don't have control, which proves my first point.
