I used to be involved in the music at a mega church here in Tulsa, OK, and let me tell you, it was cut-throat! If you questioned any of the weird music choices they made, you would be out. If there was a new kid (musician) on the block who was the flavor of the month, you'd be out. These churches would rather have talented musicians rather than true followers of Christ. Sad.

I am a new Orthodox Christian. I cannot fathom being in a church where the pastor/priest did not have a relationship with me or an up-close look at me spiritually so he could spiritually guide and advise as a spiritual father. How are these people truly shepherded?

Modern churches do not even resemble the worship of the apostles in the early church. Usually meeting in homes not buildings modeled after the early Greek theaters where there's an elevated stage with rows of seats ( pews ) where people are facing the backs of other congregants. Everyone participated not guided through preset programs of scripted services. All sang songs of praise not entertained by practiced musicians. Anyone could speak in turn and what was said could be challenged if necessary if what they said went against the written word. They weren't lorded over by one man in charge, elevated above others in attendance that were expected to blindly accept whatever interpretation of Scripture he presented. No the modern church service more closely resembles the worship of the pagan churches in the first centuries after Christ than the worship of the apostles.

Hearing the Nirvana cover played in CHURCH reminds me of when some pastors allowed Kanye's "Jesus Walks" to be performed. And I believe it was the late Rev. James Cleveland who did a "gospel" version of the Gladys Knight and the Pips' "Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me". Now, I always loved Cleveland's music but that was one too far. I can't remember who said something about us being led out of Egypt but always trying to go back or bring it with us. Sounds about right for this.

First of all let's stop calling this a church or a church of Christ anyway, because it's anything but that. There is no worshipping of our Holy Righteous GOD here. The proof is in the pudding. Just as this so called " pastor" said he doesn't like going to church. If your truly in the Lord , you WANT to praise and worship and exolt GOD because you truly love him and there's nothing better than to be around other lovers of GOD and bring praise and honor to the one you love. I spent a week interviewing at Flat Irons Church back in 2013 (for a music director position) and remember [pastor] Jim Bergen well. If I may add something here that I witnessed with my own eyes-much to my surprise. Bergen set in place a staff day during the week-I believe it was either Thursdays or Fridays-where they could bring their own alcoholic beverage into the office, and all enjoy a drink together (if you were someone who could "handle" it). I also recall the church had a mens group that met on Wednesday evenings (if memory serves me) that met at a local pub. I have my theory on what's going on here, but I'm sure many with discernment can likely figure it out for themselves.

I’ve entirely stopped listening to Christian music (I don’t listen to much music at all lol) because it’s filled with so many folks trying way too hard to sound and look relevant. It’s all these musicians and singers referring to themselves as “creatives” and “artists” because it sounds cool and “different” but in reality, they all sound the same.
When I see and hear of churches like this I always pray that God will lead them to the truth . In a message last month I told our church that a church that does not run and live according to the Word of God will not be found standing , ( Spiritually ) , in the end . The Word of God is God's blue print for our lives and the church .
There's always something slightly odd about any 50 something pastor who dresses like a 20 something and a pastor who wears t-shirts to show off pumped arms. It's all about image and, sadly, I would question as to how genuine these folk are. He is not the first 'mega-church' pastor who has a security team to make sure he isn't bothered by his congregants.

I'm exactly the same. I enjoy clean secular music of rock and hard rock genres. I love the beats, the riffs, the bass and especially the guitar solos. Think for example, Deep Purple, "Child in Time". I love to listen to that at home, in my car. I would walk out of a church having a song with the same scorching guitar solo, beats, riffs etc. As you say, a time and place for everything.
I used to play at some churches that had a lot of musicians in and out and for many of them it was just another paying gig. Some where not even saved. Churches will pay so they can get the "Best Musicians" in the area whether they know the Lord or not. It's just a show.

I used to go to this church but stopped going when I moved out of the area. I can say that it is biblically sound what they teach but the loud concert music and secular music that they sometimes play is not right.
Something that always makes me think. Worldly music can bring you to tears with its beauty. I listen the Hearts live version of Stairway to Heaven and its a very emotional experience. Now, imagine what Heavenly music will be like. Perfection in creation listened to with perfect sinless undefiled ears. Notes & tones we can't even imagine, beats, hooks etc. Can't wait. It's gonna be good :)

I used to be involved in the music at a mega church here in Tulsa, OK, and let me tell you, it was cut-throat! If you questioned any of the weird music choices they made, you would be out. If there was a new kid (musician) on the block who was the flavor of the month, you'd be out. These churches would rather have talented musicians rather than true followers of Christ. Sad.
The talented musician part i have no problem with. We should have someone who can play . But I will say that they should be more careful with music.

I am a new Orthodox Christian. I cannot fathom being in a church where the pastor/priest did not have a relationship with me or an up-close look at me spiritually so he could spiritually guide and advise as a spiritual father. How are these people truly shepherded?

Modern churches do not even resemble the worship of the apostles in the early church. Usually meeting in homes not buildings modeled after the early Greek theaters where there's an elevated stage with rows of seats ( pews ) where people are facing the backs of other congregants. Everyone participated not guided through preset programs of scripted services. All sang songs of praise not entertained by practiced musicians. Anyone could speak in turn and what was said could be challenged if necessary if what they said went against the written word. They weren't lorded over by one man in charge, elevated above others in attendance that were expected to blindly accept whatever interpretation of Scripture he presented. No the modern church service more closely resembles the worship of the pagan churches in the first centuries after Christ than the worship of the apostles.

Hearing the Nirvana cover played in CHURCH reminds me of when some pastors allowed Kanye's "Jesus Walks" to be performed. And I believe it was the late Rev. James Cleveland who did a "gospel" version of the Gladys Knight and the Pips' "Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me". Now, I always loved Cleveland's music but that was one too far. I can't remember who said something about us being led out of Egypt but always trying to go back or bring it with us. Sounds about right for this.

First of all let's stop calling this a church or a church of Christ anyway, because it's anything but that. There is no worshipping of our Holy Righteous GOD here. The proof is in the pudding. Just as this so called " pastor" said he doesn't like going to church. If your truly in the Lord , you WANT to praise and worship and exolt GOD because you truly love him and there's nothing better than to be around other lovers of GOD and bring praise and honor to the one you love. It should excite you to be in that atmosphere. Everything should be about GOD and bringing him the best praise and honor to a Holy Righteous GOD we can . NOTHING should bring attention to ourselves , we are there to worship HIM not ourselves , we are nobody. it's an honor for us to be able to praise and worship such an amazing awesome GOD .

I spent a week interviewing at Flat Irons Church back in 2013 (for a music director position) and remember [pastor] Jim Bergen well. If I may add something here that I witnessed with my own eyes-much to my surprise. Bergen set in place a staff day during the week-I believe it was either Thursdays or Fridays-where they could bring their own alcoholic beverage into the office, and all enjoy a drink together (if you were someone who could "handle" it). I also recall the church had a mens group that met on Wednesday evenings (if memory serves me) that met at a local pub. I have my theory on what's going on here, but I'm sure many with discernment can likely figure it out for themselves.

I’m so tired of Christian musicians trying to be “down”. I’ve entirely stopped listening to Christian music (I don’t listen to much music at all lol) because it’s filled with so many folks trying way too hard to sound and look relevant. It’s laughable to me at this point. It’s all these musicians and singers referring to themselves as “creatives” and “artists” because it sounds cool and “different” but in reality, they all sound the same.

When I see and hear of churches like this I always pray that God will lead them to the truth . In a message last month I told our church that a church that does not run and live according to the Word of God will not be found standing , ( Spiritually ) , in the end . The Word of God is God's blue print for our lives and the church .
There's always something slightly odd about any 50 something pastor who dresses like a 20 something and a pastor who wears t-shirts to show off pumped arms. It's all about image and, sadly, I would question as to how genuine these folk are. He is not the first 'mega-church' pastor who has a security team to make sure he isn't bothered by his congregants.

Police and fire came. She was dead on the spot. Next day, business as usual like it didn't even happen.
Seems more like entertainment than worship. I listen to secular music but there is a time and place for everything.
I'm exactly the same. I enjoy clean secular music of rock and hard rock genres. I love the beats, the riffs, the bass and especially the guitar solos. Think for example, Deep Purple, "Child in Time". I love to listen to that at home, in my car. I would walk out of a church having a song with the same scorching guitar solo, beats, riffs etc. As you say, a time and place for everything.
I used to play at some churches that had a lot of musicians in and out and for many of them it was just another paying gig. Some where not even saved. Churches will pay so they can get the "Best Musicians" in the area whether they know the Lord or not. It's just a show.
