    This is the best and clearest video I’ve seen for how to tie these knots. They’re idiot proof after this video. I was unsure on some of them
    Beforehand. I always used a blood knot as it was the easiest one. I fish snakes often so the second knot is a game changer for me. Cheers, Lindsey.

    Thanks Lindsay! I've been using a uni-knot for 5 decades. Simple, quick to tie, high strength and versatile. Fly line to leader; leader to tippet; tippet to fly; for making tapered leaders; as a sliding (on the leader) adjustable bung stopper knot or just to tie the rope to the anchor. Use the uni- knot for everything.

    Thanks, Lindsay, very good and clear. I use both the improved clinch and the surgeon's knot but I've 'not' tried the perfection loop. I'll give it a go. I think it may be useful to allow a little bit more movement for nymph and shrimp patterns on the chalk streams. Although I say I use the clinch knot, most of the time of late I've tying flies on with a Davy knot. It depends on what sort of mood I'm in.

    As a predominantly coarse angler I know the improved clinch knot as a tucked half blood knot and the surgeons knot as a water knot. I do like the palomar knot if the eye is big enough, strong knot, never had it fail.

    I prefer a Davy knot for tying flies on, specially onto droppers. There is much less tippet wastage so you can change flies more often without having to replace the whole leader.

    Cracking video as always Lindsay.
    I've just had a thought about the surgeons knot after watching the animation. If we actually used the tail pointing towards fly line, would this potentially help the dropper to sit away from the leader when retrieving?

    As a cross over from my sea fishing days leader to fly I use and recommend for many flies size 14 and over especially on heavier tippet the Palovar hitch. A simple and very high percentage strength knot for anything that has eye. The double threading through the hook eye has rarely failed me. Especially when used with anything denser than a medium intermediate line. Yes your three knots are great. Used correctly are quick and reliable. I use them as well as an honourable mention to the tucked grinner. For slippery leader materials. Not lubing the leader before slowly tightening the knot. Is a rookie error. Line burn will rob up to 75% of the effective line strength. Informed accurate information as you always supply in spade. Allows for a more informed choice.

    I find that my surgeons knot the dropper wraps it’s self around the main line so the fly on the dropper ends up tight to the main line. Is this a case the dropper is too long?

    • @lindsayiflyfish
      @lindsayiflyfish  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does behave differently in the water and depends a lot on the type of flies you fish.

    Hate clinch knots. They fail on me and usually because I fish very light tippets and the knot fails when the hook is a size 14 and the tippet is a size 7x.
    I use the 16/20 AKA Pitzen Knot. 16 pound Atlantic Salmon on a size 20 hook. it works great and I can tie it just as fast or faster than a clinch knot.

    • @lindsayiflyfish
      @lindsayiflyfish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I fish 7x regular and have never had an issue with the clinch, might be the type of tippet you are using. That said if you have a knot that works for you why change.
