Clean Edges and Mulching Flower Beds | Landscaping Renovation: Phase 2

  • Edging and mulching our garden beds is the final step in our landscaping renovation. Here I put a brand new live edge, also known as a natural edge, throughout our entire flower beds. This is a lot of work but the transformation is fantastic. Nothing makes the lawn and landscaping pop like fresh black mulch.

    Your video was very informative and i must say to all younger men watching and reading the comments, to appreciate your youth as i am now 73 years old and doing the same improvements , and yard beautification and how i wish for those days of youth and strength. But through these excellent videos and my motto , "Don't let the old man in" my large yard is starting to look great. Thank you.

    I just bought a property and it was a nightmare due to 13 massive pine trees, the previous owners had volcano mulch everywhere on them and it had root girdling all over the place, I couldn't even use a shovel or edger due to roots in the way so I had to improvise. Took 18 yards of black mulch and over a month to get it looking right.

  • @dawddawddawd
    @dawddawddawd 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    hey lovely video, just a question, what made you decide to do natural edging? wouldnt it make it harder to maintain as its easier for grass to creep into the garden bed versus having bricks as edges to prevent creeping grass?

    • @TheLawnGuardian
      @TheLawnGuardian  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I chose natural edging because I prefer the look of it. I have had stone, metal, plastic, and paver edging and don't find those any easier to maintain than the natural edging. They all need some aspect of maintenance from time to time as the stone, paver, or plastic edging shifts over time and need to be adjusted. Natural edging needs to be redefined from time to time as well. If you trim along the natural edging every week when you mow it keeps the grass from spreading into the landscaping. Thank you for watching and leaving this comment.

    I’m in Texas and hardly see this. What keeps the mulch from getting into the grass when weedeating

    • @TheLawnGuardian
      @TheLawnGuardian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Clayton! Since I grew up in the Texas I did not see live edging much either and I think it's due to how the grass types grow down there. With bermuda and St. Augustine having stolens that grow along the ground it would be challenging to keep it out of the landscaping since these grass types grow pretty aggressively. When making this edging, you create a wedge or little valley that sits below the grass so the mulch stays out of the grass because it sits below it. You can see this at min 4:36 in this video. Thanks for watching!

    • @TheLawnGuardian

    How do you like having the live edge verse the pavers edge?

    • @TheLawnGuardian
      @TheLawnGuardian  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like the look so far. The only thing I have noticed is I can get some slight pooling of water right at the edge during heavy rains. This will occasionally move the mulch as well a little but all and all it's not bad. You don't have this problem with paver edging but there are other issues I've had with paver edging so I suppose it's about choosing what you want to have to deal with while having a particular look with the different type of edging.

    • @TheLawnGuardian

      It's all about how you use the trimmer. My trimmer head spins counter clockwise so if I keep the trimmer head to my left when trimming, it will throw the clippings back in the lawn. Now when I trim the straight part of the edge, some clippings will go in the landscaping but it's marginal. I hope that makes sense. Maybe I'll do a video on it!

      Hey Bobby! I use Preen once a year in my landscape beds and have great success with this. I used it in this video to before putting mulch down but I forgot to mention it. Thanks for watching!

    I would have trim bushes before I laid fresh mulch. Also u could have tried to leave some space against the house with the mulch for termite purposely. Mulch spreaded then want be to effect against stopping weeds from growing

      I trimmed all the bushes in the first part of this project before the video before this one. th-cam.com/video/OJEXmO8ST7s/w-d-xo.html. Thank you for watching and your tips!

    So no landscape fabric for weeds is ok?

    Hey! What kind of black mulch was used here? My husband and I are moving into a rental home and we’re updating the landscape and want to go with black!

      It's just black mulch I had delivered from a local landscape supplier.

    What are your thoughts on landscape fabric before laying the mulch?

      I find it good in some instances like where I used it in this video with rock. th-cam.com/video/3EUNoSUG0es/w-d-xo.html But for this section of my landscaping I use preen once a year and I have found it does a great job. I used it in this video before putting mulch down but I forgot to mention it. Thank you for watching!

    The job came out great man. Out of curiosity do you have an issue with weeds when mulching right onto the dirt? Do you put down any chems first?

    • @TheLawnGuardian
      @TheLawnGuardian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I don't have much weed pressure in my landscaping. I used preen before putting the mulch down in this video I just forgot to mention it. I also use preen annually and have found it does a great job.

    Hey! Loved your video. I never thought about doing this instead of retaining blocks for flower bed. How far down did you dig your border?

    • @bgurney27
      @bgurney27 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey so before doing something like this there are things you should note
      - Yes it looks good,for a while.
      -Over time with settling, the mulch will run into your yard( had the same issue myself so I put in metal edging)
      - Retaining wall or even metal edging looks more professional
      - if you don't cut the edge right, the dip will flood and kill your flowers and make a mud mess of your yard around the bed

      @TheLawnGuardian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I dug down about 4" or so. Doing the landscape border like this does require some routine maintenance each year but in my experience retaining wall stones or metal edging also requires some routine maintenance to keep it looking professional as well. If you keep up with the maintenance of this natural edge it looks just as professional as the retaining wall stones and metal edging.

    Who is this imposter? 🤔What did you do with Ben? Ben has a full beard. Edges look nice and clean love the dark mulch.

    Ben - how deep did you make those edges? Mine just don't look the same at 4"

    is that the 4 or 7 cu cart?

    • @TheLawnGuardian
      @TheLawnGuardian  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the 7cuft cart. It's made by the same company that makes gorilla carts but it's the Menards brand and is a bit cheaper. www.menards.com/main/outdoors/gardening/garden-landscaping-tools/wheelbarrows-carts/yardworks-reg-1-100-lb-poly-dump-cart/yrd63/p-1470102316658-c-13262.htm

    I have a question that stumps me over and over:) How do you mow or weed eat around your mulched beds without getting grass clippings in them. Thank you in advance

    • @TheLawnGuardian
      @TheLawnGuardian  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It take a little practice and it's a bit hard to explain but hopefully I can get around to making a video that describes how to do this. Thanks for watching.

    Is the mulch still looking dark black or has it faded? if it fades you might want to look at getting a rich black top soil.

    • @TheLawnGuardian
      @TheLawnGuardian  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's faded a little but I don't know of any mulch that doesn't fade after 12 months. Thanks for watching!
