Zaxara, the Exemplary Deck Tech - THE X FACTOR // Magic the Gathering // EDH // Commander

Today we discuss one of my Commander 2020 EDH decks: Zaxara, the Exemplary. It’s a really Timmy deck that creates big mana X spells, mainly Hydra creatures, card draw spells, tutors, and “I win” game enders. This is a really fun deck that lets you scale your spells with each turn. Check out my most Timmy of deck with a splash of Johnny!

i don't think the extra Hydra token from doubling season would get any counters.

Hi, thanks for watching my video and pointing this out to me. I just checked the Wizards FAQ and this is what it says:
"If an effect, such as that of Doubling Season, causes Zaxara's ability to create multiple Hydra tokens, they each receive X +1/+1 counters."

Why wouldn't they double? I'm so confused. I guess the extra token is a replacement effect?

@@vex_mtg They should have said: they each received 2X +1/+1 counters since it's doubling season :D or choose Parallel Lives instead as example of doubler.

I would argue that Swiftfoot Boots is better in this deck, as it only gives your creature hexproof, therefore it protects your commander, while allowing you to target him with the auras.
If you use the Greaves, you would need to unprotect your commander before casting the aura leaving him vulnerable to removal spells.

Hi @Cedric Lallain, thanks for checking out my video and adding some good insight on using Swiftfoot Boots over Lightning Greaves. The reason I went with Greaves is for mana efficiency when casting those X spells and being able to equip on the same turn. Swiftfoot Boots is definitely better if you want to protect your Commander while trying to go infinite.

Great video. I like that you goldfish to show a hand. I have a zaxara deck but only 5 creatures and I purposely didn’t put infinite mana in mine. Only mistake I saw in the video was your genesis hydra could not have put the land in, non land permanents. Great vid!

I'm glad you enjoyed the video. Yeah, good call on the Genesis Hydra, I didn't even realize that until you commented. I really like how Zaxara allows you to go in many different directions. I'm a Johnny Combo player at heart and I couldn't resist the infinite combos.
