This is an incredible film, that is a part not only of American aviation history, but of the aviation history of the world - and that was what Pan Am was, the Airline to the World. My thanks to your father for this rare gem!
Both were CIA mules..PAA first choice..TWA as back up... I loved the airline industry... BUT I saw really evil things happen under the guise of "commerce and travel"
I remember standing on the parking deck of the Pan Am Terminal looking out on the planes when I was a kid. I loved watching the pilots doing their cockpit preps, wishing it was me in one of those seats. I did get my wish fulfilled, alas but only for a few years, when I got to fly the 727 for Pan Am for the last several years of its existence. If I could I would do it all over again.
I love it how at 8.01 the reverser sleeves open up before the front landing gear is down! That takes skill and EXPERIENCE, which all of us who ever flew on Pan Am knew that they had more than any one else and ALWAYS WILL. Thanks for the memories. - Godspeed Pan Am.
Is still in my mind Pan Am!,my Parents worked for the famous Airline Company,l flew couple of times, the first One,was free, because of my Father, from Rome to New York,.l will never forget. He was so proud,of the job at Pan Am,was a Director of the Public Relations for ltaly.l miss all that.
2:53 - The aircraft is N656PA - Clipper Empress of The Seas. It was named Clipper Live Yankee, before being renamed to Empress of The Seas. It was the aircraft involved in the Flight 73 hijacking in Karachi. It got renamed Clipper New Horizons, where it was sold to Evergreen and was leased back to Pan Am, who returned it in 91, where it got scrapped by Evergreen, as all 747s eventually do.
It was always a great airlines and just like a person, became the victim of hard times. I am confident Pan Am will return even better than before. The first airline to introduce us to the 747 the first American airline to take us to the former U.S.S.R. and China. I hope Pan Am will recover its former building in Manhattan. All the best :
Pan Am is dead. If it came back, it would not be anything like the airline it was. It could not compete as that airline back in the late 80s and early 90s and that is why it collapsed. Flight 103 and the Gulf war sped up the inevitable. Without those it could've lumbered on until perhaps 1995 or maybe even 2001 (as its competitor TWA managed). If it came back, it would likely be a budget airline and thus would be an insult to the pioneering airline that it was. Even the premium US and European carriers that are left are shadows of their former selves. The once World's favourite airline BA is a poor offering, as are American, United and Delta, Lufthansa, KLM, Air France, etc. Qatar and Emirates are outliers but have oil money behind them hence they can survive. The airline market changed, and Pan Am could not adapt..
Wonderful video! I have raped the replay button countless times. Pan Am remains my favorite airline of all time and having been lucky enough to have flown on her majestic 747s (clipper class) makes this a nostalgic gem. Thanks for sharing and a huge thank you to all former employees of Pan Am for having set so many milestones of commercial aviation with grace, elegance and class. Pan am, you are greatly missed.
@onecunningfox Splendid video, from start to finish. Exceptional touchdown, he already had the reverser sleeves out as it glided in just inches above. Thanks for notifying me.
I flew PanAm from HAM to JFK when I was very young, aircraft was a brandnew A310. Unfortunately I cannot remember very much. They served my Home City Hamburg from JFK with A310s and also 747s ocassionally. Also they flew to HAM to Berlin THF with 737/727 and to LHR with 727.
@@ClipperNeukoelln My confidence it's LHR is based on 2 things, by where the original crosswind runway used to intersect 27L by the end of the touchdown markings which matches old airport charts. The other is the footage of the taxi in, where you can see the old Heathrow tower clearly. Fantastic footage btw, so interesting to see Pan Am in her former days!
PanAm 103 starts from FRA but with a B727. The PA103 would be continued in London with a B747. PanAm had a common flight number for many flights. So the feeder flights were also operated under the same flight number. This system does not exist any more today.
@@bobbank74 That was clipper Maid of the seas not Empress of the seas, This one was hijacked in 1986 as Pan Am 73 in Karachi 20 people were killed when the hijackers opened up on the passengers with their guns and grenades. The Purser on the flight Neerja Bhanot was awarded the Ashok Chakara gallantry award for her bravery which was subject of the biofilm Neerja, She was tragically killed in the attack.
The Lockerbie plane was Maid of the Seas. This one was in the Karachi hijacking. I worked on it after that - you could see where they patched over the bullet holes in the cabin walls.

Have you flown American airlines recently? It's devoid of anything called service and the planes are looking exceptionally tired. Time to pack up and get in the history books.
There's great footage in this. Aside from the 747s, which were glorious, there's multiple shots of their L-1011-500s and Pan Am helicopter service.
Good call on that. Pan Am Tristars were -500 series longer range L 1011s.

things will never be the same without Pan Am or TWA.

Pam Am was a true pioneer of not only aviation, but human history. If an airline really wants to be revolutionary, it will have huge shoes to fill.
747 truely is the queen of the skies
This video brings back many, many, memories. I was part of PanAm Brussels from 1968 till 1991, till the bitter end. Thanks;

Diese Musik! Ich schwebe in Erinnerung!
I'm an airplane geek. I don't deny it and I'm mighty proud :)
I'm so glad I worked for Pan Am in the 80's. I might have been ON this flight.
Nice video! I love that Delta L-1011 that snuck into the frame for a few seconds :D
Amazing it gives me goosebumps..brings back some great memories..
Great video brings 😢 in eyes.. Great job..for 12 yrs in JFK LGA Mia.. Thank you

Klasse Video, great video.
Danke fürs hochladen !
Wonderful!
Back in the good days of aviation & piloting!
just miss this airline so badly TT Come Back Pan AM
The music was the corporative Panam jingle, called: "The experiencie"
Wunderbar.
Nice video.
Can't count how many times I flew PA 72 from JFK-FRA to connect with LH 360 to Belgrade Yugoslavia in the 1970s and 1980s.
That plane was involved in one of the worlds worst air disasters... although it was on the ground...
I worked on it for years after the Karachi incident.
You could see little spots where they covered over the bullet holes.
I flew that airplane when I was 3 years old!!!
The one and only !!
Wow!
this documetation is made in Germany, that's why it is in German! should I translate you the comments??? ;)

You can make subtitles.

At 6:55, FO has what looks like a Casio CA-95 on the wrist. Geek proud!
I didn’t know Pan Am had L-1011’s in their fleet.
They were even a launch customer of the L1011. These planes all went to United when they sold the Pacific Network to them in 1986.
Wasnt this exact plane involved in the Lockerbie bombing?
No, but close enough. It was the plane involved in the flight 73 hijacking incident in Karachi in 1986.
Fun fact, at 07:09 the landing filmed is not at JFK. Looks very much like Heathrow runway 27L!
It's not JFK. But I'm not sure Heathrow or maybe FRA? Anyway 100% not JFK

0:03 Such a worn looking aircraft. It was noticeable then, as it is now. A reflection of Pan Am's financial condition.
Viajar en avion era todo un acontecimiento social
Frankfurt was where a LOT of contraband went on...
Very memorable experience,
Pan Am 747 from Frankfurt to New York? That was the rout the 747 had which came down over Lockerbie

it's a good bet the engine startup sounds are those of a Boeing 707 instead of a 747-100 with Pratt & Whitney JT9D high bypass turbofans
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
That was the plane that was hijacked as Pan Am Flight 73 Clipper Empress of the Seas
It wasn't hijacked. It was brought down by a terrorist bomb attack , the wreckage fell on the Scottish town of Lockerbie.

Jerry Mejias was right.
