Ah, MonoU Tron. The deck where you see your opp play a Tron land, get terrified, then see the Island and realize it's actually the Bye. (In Modern, anyway, I hope this deck is sweet)
Way way back many eons ago, mono blue tron was the one deck I showed up to an FNM with since I had a sick addiction to blue... I only won one game but it was vs hive mind primeval titan, which was kinda cool; I think I put a platinum angel with tron and they couldn't kill me with a pact trigger so they just moved on to the next game since I think they were a bit interaction light, more heavy on combo
@@ZameruxI remember getting cooked by that deck way back in the day at an FNM. I had no clue what was going on and had a long conversation with the pilot about the deck at the end of the night. They insisted the deck was too good and needed a banning, sure enough a couple of weeks later Summer Bloom bit the dust. Good times tho.
my favourite part of this video was the different iterations of serpent dragon & committing to 'whale snake' and running with it 😂 you have the most understated humour of any magic player, thank you for this
I'm the deck submitter for this league. Dire Mimic is more intended for counterspell decks than edict decks. Going forward, I think I will be replacing them with either prismatic lens or izzet signet to facilitate a red splash for fire//ice and sideboard breath weapon. Out cold seems aggressively mediocre as a sideboard card. I think I will be replacing them with the aforementioned breath weapon. Gut shot and witness protection are also candidates for the sideboard. If you are looking to keep this deck "mono" blue, I would highly recommend gut shot and witness protection in the sideboard. As for what to play over dire mimic in the mono blue version, I think having a full playset of candy trail is probably best. Going up a marauding brinefang and impulse each is also fine. You could also experiment with any of the following counterspells: power sink, miscalculation, prohibit, soul read(paper only), main deck exclude.
hi Sam, I'm trying to test the updated list you're talking about, with the red splash for fire/ice maindeck, and the breathweapons in sb, can you link it?
@@sammckay1307 I tried but it doesn't work :( I follow you since the match vs Kirblinxy and was waiting for the decklist since this video, but I knew it's not the updated list you're playing, because there's not the red splash. How can we do? Just super curious of the izzet version
@@ilarioneamato7019 going to try just writing it out since TH-cam is being aggressive. Replace desert for molten tributary, dire mimcs for izzet signets, and unauthorized exits for fire//ice. In the sideboard, run two each of breath weapon, gut shot, annul, and relic and one ulamog's crusher and a playset of hydroblast.
People were calling Arcane Signet "maybe too generically good" just a few years ago. If they printed one that worked outside of commander, had flash, and could get up and walk around as a 5/5 for 3 mana, into Pauper, I think I would've heard about it before.
Mono red lost a lot of metashare with the Swiftspear ban, and that opened up a lot of space for slower decks. The format still definitely has some very fast aggro decks, and mono red is still viable, but the ban definitely did its job, the meta has been much more diverse lately in my experience.
@@diegobrandomtg I haven't seen it in a single league until the last 2 week but have been playing against in paper for months so it's just a bit wild to see in a Bosh video.
It wasn't covered in the tech, but the pitch-crab is a great tool in pauper control mirrors. There's no commonly played stifle, so if your opponent leaves UU/UW up for a counterspell or Dovin's Veto, the mana leak punches right through
Hey man, your videos actually got me back into magic. I haven't played since War of the Spark pre-release, now I'm trying to make Grixis Control competitive in pauper.
@@BoshNRoll thanks! Magic used to be such a large part of my life from Zendikar until about 5 years ago, it's nice to have it back. Keep up the great content (more pox plz xD)
Im sure this comes up later, but, to note, Dire Mimic is a treasure, you need to sac it to get the mana. Second thing to note, it goes in one other deck. Grixis Mystical Teachings control
It doesnt come up in pauper, but a really fun thing you can do with U tron while you're contolling your opponents turn with something like mind slaver is to cast a spell from their hand, then cast condescend for 0, then choose not to pay (which as you mentioned does mean the spell is countered); 1 mana counter target spell, scry 2, the control players dream haha
I was really excited about the Dire Mimic include in the deck because I love that card, but I do think it's not really bringing a ton to this build. I slotted 2 copies of it into my "treasures matter" pauper build I was messing around with and it did a lot of work, but for a controll-y shell with especially blue involved, and you don't need more than one color of mana I think your choices of replacement sound better. loved the moment it got sacced ;)
Was poking around for more X spells this thing could use (sue me, I played Rosheen commander yesterday) and find myself curious as to whether a Pop Quiz/Fractal Summoning package could work. Kinda rough on the colored mana, sadly, so would probably require bumping that up a little at the expense of other things, but I kinda get the sense the deck needs more color access anyway and there's a couple other interesting things a lesson package could run too (most notably Environmental Sciences, but I could imagine intro to prophecy/annihilation having some value in the right context; in general it's kinda neat that there's a bunch of colorless lessons given the whole tron thing) There were also a surprising number of spots where Power Sink would have been kinda nasty, but I suspect overall the scry 2 is more valuable, it's not good in every matchup, and it's not worth eating up sideboard space for the matchups where it is.
I've tested pop quiz/fractal summoning. 3 mana cantrip + learn is not something this decks wants. Fractal Summoning is a very late game play regardless of if you increase the blue sources because of land sequencing. Environmental Sciences is not terrible but less good than I initially thought because you have to have a blue source to cast it anyway. I've definitely considered power sink but haven't tested it yet. I cannot imagine it being better than condescend on average, but they only let you register 4 copies of a card. I am currently testing a very light red splash for fire//ice and sideboard breath weapon facilitated by izzet signet and molten tributary.
At 1:18:10 I think the play was to brainstorm looking for another repeal plus island to play around tamiyo's safekeeping. Golem doesn't do anything on this clogged board
Definitely Condescended for 0 once. Not sure it was the right play. Think I'll retool my old Modern list for Pauper now, thanks for showing off this sweet list! Any chance to run a copy of Capsize in here?
A kind of interesting play i thought of in match one: when opp cast dread return on the lothleth giant, you could have paid for x=7 for the condescend, which would leave enough mana to crab-cycle while either forcing the opponent to tap out for the counter-cost or hard cast the giant from hand, both of which would then be countered by the follow up crab-cycle Conditional x-counters can be used to just force opp to waste mana
Brainstorm over Ponder is an interesting choice. In Pauper I usually choose Preordain > Ponder > Brainstorm, but having 12+ shuffle effects is pretty sweet.
I always tell myself I'm the type of player who would concede to a combo and not make my opponent click it out, but whenever I play pauper, I realize that I've been lying to myself. It just brings something out of me.
As the person who submitted this deck, no. You're over optimizing for the slow decks. The late game is where this deck shines. 2 mana is way more than 1 especially in a deck chock full of 2 drops: impulse, repeal, condescend, unauthorized exit, dire mimic, capsizing waze, marauding brinefang cycle. 2 mana sorcery speed completely destroys the curve when trying to hold up xu spells in the early game.
@@sammckay1307 that all makes sense! Thanks for explaining! :) Deck looks freaking sweet. Probably gonna build it in paper for some causal games with my friends
I worry about the games when in the deck intro you missed/skipped the part on the mimic about sacrificing it to get the mana. I see a misplay coming, hopefully it’s caught before it costs a game.
There are a lot of opinions on what one should do if you are dead on board, but your opponent will time out before executing a combo, as was the case at 1:18:56 here. I always think its kind of noble to take the L and scoop, give the the win they would have in paper. But I also understand the clock is part of the game, so I noone can fault you for using it to your advantage here and letting them time out the last 2 minutes I guess.
I think always conceding to combo decks is unfair to fair decks. Fair decks spend more time getting to the late game than combo decks. Allowing the combo player to have more time to make better decisions bc they know they don't have to execute their end game is not fair to the fair deck player.
I think it's pretty disingenuous to the G/B deck to claim you'll never have more cards in hand. Once you started slamming Loriens you had seen more of your deck and had 2 or more cards in hand over the OP. They might "churn" better in the mid game, but once you hit high gear you outpace them in every aspect, which is what blue tron does.
Listening to the deck tech, knowing Dire Mimic will dissapoint you when you realise it's a lotus petal
We make it a surprisingly long way before I get roasted by that.
