I know your channel focuses on nutrition and I'm hooked. But I have a question about blood work, especially the SDMA test. What is it for? What is the benefit for doing annual blood work? Why do some dogs get blood work and others don't? My 15 month old Bernese had pre op blood for her spay & pexy. She even ordered extra clotting tests. When my shelter dogs came home they were already desexed and never had routine bloodwork. Was hoping you could do a video on Lab work
I can’t do a video on that as it’s way too complicated for a general audience. There is no reasonable expectation that I could do the topic justice. To answer your question, SDMA is an early detection biomarker for kidney disease. Blood work yearly is important because our pets age at an excelerated rate and we want to catch things before they are too late. A physical can’t tell us everything as most diseases are better prevented than cured and a pet can’t tell us when things are slightly off. Some dogs get bloodwork and others don’t due to finances I’d venture to say in 95% or cases. There would be no other reason not to medically, more information is always better than less information. Key example is the care your shelter dog received vs your personal pet. Shelter vets would love lab work Prior to surgery, it’s just not an option due to finances.
When you mention it’s best to not switch dogs back-and-forth on food, are you mainly talking about the protein or the entire food. I was considering a beef and rice, frozen and a beef and oat fresh combo.
Hi Dr. Rea! Can you please review Pup Above? Also do you have content on flea/heartworm medications? I'm trying to decide for my pup. Concerns with potential side effects of chemical meds
@@AnimalDocRea Because there aren't 5 good kibble brands? LOL You know I'm just kidding you. However, Purina Cat Chow is the #1 selling cat food. It is a terrible product. 1. It is all life stages. 2, The levels of calcium and phosphorus are too high for adult and senior cats. 3. But the levels of protein and fat are too LOW for a kitten. Who is this for? Only feed it to cats that are 11 months old? Happy Feline Friday!
I really just dislike the whole “top” series people do. There is not way I can know what’s best for an individual when I don’t know the individual. I guess that’s the difference between me and my non- veterinary cohorts in this sphere.
Please consider the ones on my request. Muenster is interesting the owner ate it for a month to prove how good it is. Solid Gold claims to be the first ever holistic food. The rest are in the midwest local brands. Thanks.
I don’t share as it isn’t really relevant to your decision as our pets and circumstances are individual. I also don’t want to be accused of being biased
Thanks for this!! Have you done a review on Nutram wet food? My pup is so fussy and really isn’t enjoying her kibble. I had a sample of the nutram wet puppy and she gobbled it. If not, do u have a wet food that you reviewed that scored 8/10 or better??
@ is there any wet food that you have reviewed that’s scored well? Specifically for puppy? I did like that the open farm grass fed grain beef whole grain option was a 8/10. But not for puppy….right? She is 51/2 mths. Small breed. 7.5 lbs.
I leave medical management of disease up to the attending veterinarian because there are a lot of factors that go into a diet recommendation. In general for pancreatitis cases low fat and consistency are key. Sometimes even prescription levels of low fat.
@@AnimalDocRea it does seem to be that Ollie is within fat parameters our vet prefers for our little girl, Chloe. So we will give that a try. Thanks for your videos. So helpful.
Hi Dr. Rea, thank you for your video. I just switched my 12 year old german shep mix from Go to Open Farm Wild caught grain free version because it had the pumpkin in it. She was having soft poops. Prior I was adding Firm Up Pumpkin powder to her Go dog food. It was working a little but then I switched to OF and it seemed to help her. She goes more often but not as soft that I can pick it up easily. She does get grain from her treats so I wasn't too worried about grain free. Is there a better option out there that has pumpkin or that would firm up her poops. She still thinks she's a puppy, plenty of energy just goes to bet early :)
The pumpkin to form poop thing is a complete myth so I would t fixate on that. We can’t even be sure exactly how much pumpkin is even in the food as they don’t list quantities. There are lots of options if you don’t link yourself to that. But if you do want to stay with pumpkin I think farmina had a few good options. I’d see your vet for the soft stool though, there may be an underlying medical issue.
In your practice and experience have you noticed any reactions by dogs to probiotics? I've been told that soft stool can be an intolerance/allergy to chicken, peas, corn, wheat, etc.. I've changed up food and the only thing that is common is the probiotic ingredients. Now it can be one strain or one of the different strains. Can this be checked?
I’ve never heard of probiotics causing loose stool but it’s easy, just cut them out and see if it stops. I’d never start there on my differential for loose stool though.
Glad you are safe...and as always providing great info:)
Thank you
Glad to see that you are OK. 🙏🐱
I am, but totally forgot it was Thursday! Office was closed for cautionary reasons.
Wow! Pleasantly surprised!

Open Farm's fresh ingredients really shine!
I'm more concerned with the nutrient profile and then the ingredients used to achieve it
