Winter Bushcraft Trip in Snow - Survival Candle - Canvas Poncho Shelter

  • Bushcraft and camping in the snow with some cooking and woodcraft. Using the Polish Lavvu poncho as shelter. Second night the wick was too short in the lantern so made a candle the next day. Last time I did this candle people said you can't make a candle out of sap without beeswax in the mix. So this time I made sure to prove them wrong. So let me tell you about it.
This candle have a strip of birch bark as wick. It doesn't really work as a normal wick where fire cling on to it. The wick burns up fast and leaves like a small elevation of carbonized residue on the surface in the warm sap. That is the place where the flame holds on too. This candle is a bit slow in the start when you light it and sometimes needs to be relit a couple of times. In wind it won't work. The downside with not having a real wick is it is very sensitive to the slightest wind. As with fatwood you harvest, sap will also have different amount of resin in it from time to time. Every time I make this candle it burns a bit different. Normally, the point with mixing wax to the sap is to make it burn slower. Uncontrolled fire on spruce sap burns too much and too fast. But I have never found beeswax in the wild so I had to think of a way to make it work anyway, as always fast and simple or else I don't see the point in making it. The stones on top work as dampers where you can control the burn to your liking. This time the burn was a bit sparky because it was snowing when I made it. Moisture got into the sap mix. The tiny explosions of water evaporating made the flame more erratic. Im not sure if this shortened or prolonged the burn time. On one hand maybe the moisture slowed things down, on the other I know erratic burn is never good. But I normally have heating and cooking in mind when it comes to fires so who knows. But if the point with a candle is to see in the dark you want one without moisture to avoid the flickering light. There is also the idea to mix other things in the sap like ash or dirt to slow the burn but I have not tried that yet. Of course a small piece of cotton etc also will work as a wick in an emergency.
The optimal use of this candle are in calm dark places. In a cave for example. I would light it when I need it and blow it out directly. This way it would last for days. The total burn this time was about an hour. Last time I made one was in summer. That one burned longer, but there can be many circumstances explaining why. It was another piece of sap, different temp, season, wind, a steady burn that led to I could put the stone ring in real tight, making a small steady flame that at times burned so controlled it almost looked frozen in time. Like a picture. It was really cool. The smoke from this candle is pretty nasty so bear that in mind if using it in a smaller tent. It would need good ventilation above.
    Thanks for watching!

Ingeniously adaptive, sir! One time I had a lantern chimney glass shatter when a rain squall blew water on it. I then made a crude candle using a piece of leather bootlace for a wick and cooking oil for fuel. A mere puff of breeze would blow it out if it wasn't shielded, but it worked.
Nicely done video, as per your standard, my friend.

Swed👍👍 Awesome snowy trek in the bush with all the good stuff included. Lavvu shelter is perfect, waterproof, windproof, wearable and more. Too bad the hot blast lantern failed you, but they are more prone to that. Where there's fire, food isn't far behind and it usually makes me head to the kitchen... Nothing like snow in a forest, usually makes it dead silent unless the wind blows. The sap candle worked good given the circumstances, a tiny campfire in candle form with all the same traits. Well as always the filming was top notch as were the camp chores, no BS just pure utility. Thanks for the excellent trip and hard work bringing me along. Next time..

What happened to your lantern? Did it run out of fuel? Or are you using a paraffin based fuel and it solidified? Cold weather means time to switch to kerosene for your lanterns if you can get it. I used to see it at local fuel stations years ago, but it's been quite some time since I've seen a kerosene pump in my area. Nowadays, I guess the vehicle and home heating fuel industry uses a diesel fuel product treated with some sort of anti-gelling compound to keep the diesel from gelling in the tank and fuel lines during cold weather for vehicle and outdoor heating oil tanks. What a great idea for making a handle eye on your auger bit! I would never have thought to use a shackle like that. My solutions thus far have been a bit more labor intensive. I like this idea!

So nice. My first feedback after watching almost of your videos for about a half year. There are many camp TH-camrs who pretend to be alone but work as a team. I think they aren't great. That is the reason I like yours. So I hope you don't do it in such way and keep your current way that you are doing now and after. I think the food recipes don't always have to be 'nature natural'. You can eat instant ramen, ready-made food kit, bottled sauce etc. It won't hurt the quality of your contents. They are rather pretty much 'natural' from my view. And there are not actually something we can call it food in the nature. Even if there are edible ingredients to catch and harvest in the field during the summer. They are not enough to sustain a grown up adult who needs enough calories to survive outdoor so... I hope you to eat well with anything you bought from supermarket.
And I hope the lengths of the contents to be long as possible as you can. In this video, I loved the candle-burning long take.
I play your contents during the night like a background video, to calm myself. It has some kinda function of ASMR as well. The buring sounds of woods were really nice. It doesn't have to be filled with so many things that you do. It doesn't have to be swtiching of many video files. You can just put a long take video that you filmed from your drone hovering standstill on the sky, watching down the beautiful northern winter forest. Or you can just put a long take film of campfires. I think they are really nice. Because it doesn't have to be informative(by being short and clear) but the subscribers are rather want to be feeling relaxed in the nature by watching your contents. Thank you! Stay safe in the winter forest.

Have really been enjoying your vids. Glad I found your channel. I've been admiring that wool sweater you were wearing in this vid and others. Any chance you could tell us what brand or model it is?

how far off grid do you go,do you come across others doing the same.
also i get the none talking part as it adds to the secluded feel of being alone maybe say a few things now and then.
also your cooking skills are so impressive you should do a cook book i know some things are Swedish but we can kind of follow the ingredients.
