It's not really "art", and it hasn't come a long way, there are just no limitations to resources for some more ordinary details or even some light effects... Otherwise it's the same shid as always.

For anyone wondering, this is the latest update I read in these comments from a user named "Elle Meine Hater" : "at the almost 50 ppl under this arguing if it’s cancelled or not: There has been an update with new screenshots in early december! The development team is working on final touches and the game has not been cancelled. They will inform the community if there is a set release date but there have been major delays due to covid since the power cut off their office and they had no chance to enter the building :)"

Yes, but I think the visuals are the really impressive part. I have other games with a similar excellent soundtrack but the pixel art here is a step further from anything I have seen before. Only hope the narrative and game mechanics to be at the same level, if that happens, probably this game will be a serious choice for indie of the year

I saddens me they didn't show up in the last indie world of the year. Why did the marketing team drop this trailer so early before the game was even close to completion?
I'm not a huge fan of the combination of Pixel-art and 3d lighting in a game, but this game's pixel art is just so damned good it gets away with it. Also, it is interesting to see an Indie game from a non-Western developer (outside of the Japanese hobbyist scene responsible for games like _Touhou Luna Nights_ ) - the devs are based in Shanghai according to their website.

The problem is, a lot of games use it as a crutch, in order to paste over - and somewhat disguise - sub-par pixel-art (particularly 2D survival horror games). That, and I'm something of a pixel-art purist, and want games to live up to the heights of the late 90s (Symphony of the Night, Metal Slug III, etc.)

I’m so excited for this coming to Switch! I didn’t even have a Switch but then I saw Eastward and I got a gaming computer for it. Then everyone was commenting “Switch, Switch, Switch etc” on the Chucklefish channel’s Eastward trailer. And now it’s coming to Nintendo, and now I got a Switch because of Eastward!

Chucklefish is a Publisher, not a developer. They chose a specific type of game to publish and fix their name to. Although they are known largely for their successful publications of Starbound and Stardew Valley, they also have many bad games they have published as well.

Absolutely in love with that box art at the end! I love it when franchises use a different marketing art style than what the gameplay can visually show (Earthbound, Celeste, Starfox)
I wouldn't call it a masterpiece mostly because the gameplay and dungeons are kinda bland, and the pacing is kinda bad, and there are lots of loose threads in the plot that go nowhere. But the art is 10/10, the music is great, the characters are all pretty cool and likeable, and the the world/lore is very interesting to learn about your first time through.
I hope they do a sequel in the style of the non pixel sequences. beautiful music, beautiful visuals. I hope the music quality will be constant throughout the whole game.
With games getting more and more detailed with the graphics it makes me really appreciate games that go retro with the pixel art.

Man. I remembered when Chucklefish only had 2 or 3 games developed. It's really impressive to see how much the scope of their studio expanded.
