Both have a character who keeps the community or family together (Angel vs Abuela Claudia). Both are meant to be for generation “now.” In Jonathan’s time, “RENT” was for the MTV generation. “In the Heights” is for us now.

I wouldn't say that. Those of us who grew up in the 1980s were inundated with Andrew Lloyd Webber themes as they were the big ticket shows. Prior to that it was Westside Story. ALW brought Rock into theatre starting in the 1970s. There weren't many original musicals in the 1990s other than RENT. LMM isn't throwing shade, he's just saying it was an intimidating task and ambition to be in.
