We had an idea to live in a van for four months. We needed something fairly economical because we travel a lot of kilometres. It also had to have a tow ball to fit bikes on the back and roof racks for our three surf skis.
The biggest thing was it needed to fit a comfy bed that could be a full size bed at night but a couch during the day so we had space in the van.
We didn't want permanent fixtures as we'll only be living in it for four months.
Here's our first set up.
We'll be posting another video showing exactly how it's set up so make sure you subscribe.
The other big thing was fitting in all of our training equipment - everything we need for swimming, road cycling, mountain biking, running and surf skiIng!

The production quality of this video is just so real I love it. Thanks for the wholesome video guys! happy travelling
Thanks so much for watching and your comment 😊
Add a fabric strap to the top side of the bit that creates the back rest of the seat. Simply pull on the strap & push the front of the bed back in place. Slides in so much easier, and no messing around climbing in the back. These ikea beds make great rock n roll beds for campers. I love mine!
Great tip. Thanks!
Nice to see you both so happy with it :)
Even 3 years later, we both still love it.
This is amazing I’m only 16 and I’ve just purchased a Hyundai iload van looking to do a fit out and out looking for the best ideas. I think the roll up bed is my go to choice. I’m not to far up the road either, just up at Bribie island.
That’s awesome. Good luck. Our advice is start simple and go for some trips to decide what you like and don’t like and what suits the way you travel and slowly build from there. Might see you put on the road
What’s the name/brand model of the bed???
@darchiblack3541 it’s from IKEA but they don’t make that model anymore.
@@TriFitwithTimandAmanda Spewing it’s a perfect fit 😩 haha thanks for the reply tho 💯
@darchiblack3541 this is the link which includes the name of the bed. Maybe ikea will be able to show you something similar. www.ikea.com/au/en/p/lycksele-loevas-two-seat-sofa-bed-ebbarp-black-white-s89205055/
So happy I found you! I have an iLoad and converting for camping….
We love our iLoad. It’s so good for living in and easy to get around as an everyday vehicle. Thanks for watching
absolutely love it guys well done!
Thanks so much. We’ve had lots of adventures since then!
The missus has an I load she uses for work and I've been itching to convert it to a weekender modular fitout camper van. Your video helps a lot. My mates just did a 5 month trip around Oz in their van which inspires me to give it a go.
Do it. You won’t regret it. The freedom is amazing
About to buy an iLoad and that IKEA bed hack is one of the best things yet so far I watched your upload :)
Three weeks into our van life and everyday we say how good the bed is. It took a few days to work out the best way to turn it from couch to bed and then bed to couch. But it’s so comfy and gives us lots of room. Good luck
Hey - did you secure the sofabed into the van and if so how. I’ve got one of the same sofa beds sitting j my shed so it seems a logical first step to try it in my iload - thanks
@@jeremygoldwyn7427 mate I’ve owned my iload for 6 months now and still have t bought the sofa 🛋 or fitted my van out, I’ve been way too slack
Nope. We haven’t secured it at all. It’s heavy enough not to move and we can’t ame it out whenever we need
You’ll get there!
I just finished my Hyload 2013. Ready to do my trips like you guys.
Awesome. We're sure you'll love it!
Hyload...love it...
Wow. We have two of those ikea sofa beds in our unit and I was thinking if we reconfigured our iMax it would be perfect. So thank you...
Fits perfectly
@@TriFitwithTimandAmandaHow did you go across the Nullarbor.
And have you installed any awnings. We wouldn't be without reimo tailgate tent...
@@jo-annel.wright2975 We've got a Kings awning which has been great. We prefer the side awning, rather than the back as we usually carry up to 4 bikes which are on the back.
Loved it! So many beautiful free camping sites. Unfortunately we had some time restraints so didn't get to explore much.@@jo-annel.wright2975
That's awesome! I'm inspired to try this with my iload
Do it! Thanks for watching
@@TriFitwithTimandAmanda I just got the exact bed and very happy with how it fits, Thanks for the tip!
The fit is so good, isn’t it! Enjoy your adventures!
nice job guys!
Thanks mate
I just brought an iload and I’m going to convert it. I Love cycling and am debating whether to buy a fold bike or keep my mountain bike.
We love our mountain bikes. If you’re on your own though you might be able to keep the fold bike in the van. It depends on where you want to ride
Nice video ,I really love going offgrid once in a while, that is why Im researching more about vanlife, hyundai is my top choice , it has a pop up roof version
Thanks. We love the iload. It’s perfect for us - not too big and it’s reliable. Didn’t know about the pop up version
@@TriFitwithTimandAmanda i think its not available in your country, but still that iload is perfect, you can just install a rooftent with a platform so you can enjoy a nice elevated view
@@TriFitwithTimandAmanda I enquired...a pop top conversion costs around $7000 somewhere here...not far from the Queensland Gold Coast.
What a great and helpful video! I am considering buying this van secondhand 😌
How did it all end up years later? I’d love to hear an update if possible, please! 😄
We’re glad you found it helpful. We still travel in it and still love the simplicity of our setup.
We’ve added a better table and chairs but the inside is pretty much the same.
We’re about to travel across the Nullarbor at the end of next month, so we’ll probably put out a new travel video in December
Needed to find an under cover parking tall enough to fit the van, not the car 😂😂. Good work guys.
The things we’ve learnt since driving a van!
Love the video, what the name of the bed from ikea?
Its called the Lycksele Lövås. We got it with the standard, thinnest mattress (there are 3 thicknesses available) and we bought the under bed storage too
@@TriFitwithTimandAmanda thank you, your videos are great
Thanks so much for watching 😊
Would love to know the name of the bed from IKEA please . Looks great.
It’s this one www.ikea.com/au/en/p/lycksele-loevas-two-seat-sofa-bed-ebbarp-black-white-s89205055/
Where you guys get a bed set it’s so comfact
We got it from ikea but don’t think they make that one anymore
With rising rents and energy etc time to live in vans I think
It seems like lots of people are going this way
How's the iload going? Looking to get one as a camper too, glad to find others who have
We love it. We’d recommend some kind of awning so you have some extra space. We’ve spent 4 months in it as the longest time we’ve been in it at once but have plans to spend a year soon.
Do you have the name for the sofa bed? I have been looking for the perfect bed for my iload. It is such a great idea!
It’s this one
www.ikea.com/au/en/p/lycksele-loevas-two-seat-sofa-bed-ebbarp-black-white-s89205055/
doing same build. Where did you get that bed frame setup?
We bought the bed from Ikea, but I don't think they make it anymore.
Love i! Am about to pick up my van. What sort of bike rack is that?
It’s a Yakima Fold Click 2
@@TriFitwithTimandAmanda Thankyou.
How did you go across the Nullarbor.
I am looking for the type of roofrails you fitted on the Hyundai van ? I have the same, want to fit a rooftoptent. Are those removabel roofrails without the need to drill through the roof ?
Yes they’re removable. We bought the van 2nd hand and they were already on it. They’re Hyundai branded so we assume they’re factory fitted
Nice - is it possible to transport the surfski - bagdoor goes to high ?
When the back door opens it just barely touches one of the skis, so we are careful when opening the door.
@@TriFitwithTimandAmanda Thanks 4nice vids, okay, i saw it in the next video. Greatings from germany !
Thanks for watching 👋🏼
this was 3yrs ago. Did your engine blow up?
Nope. We’re still going strong 💪🏼
What's the exact model of that couch?
It’s a Lycksele loevas two seat sofa bed. This is the link we had for it but I don’t think it’s available anymore www.ikea.com/au/en/p/lycksele-loevas-two-seat-sofa-bed-ebbarp-black-white-s89205055/
What model is the ikea bed?
Gotta say, this video's at bit of an iload, although....that steering wheel 🤔
What year is your iload? Is it the diesel motor? Had any issues ?
It’s 2014 and diesel. We get it serviced regularly and have it booked in to fix an exhaust leak
@@TriFitwithTimandAmanda nice , I'm looking at a 2008 diesel tomorrow with 200,000kms on the clock , replaced turbo apparently,.. can't really seem to find if they're known for any issues
Ours had 135000 when we bought it and we’ve done 70000 in just over a year. We’re really happy with ours
Hi ,is that a double or queen bed 👍
Love to know where the bike rack is from please
It’s a Queen I think. We use queen sheets and they fit nicely. It’s this bed www.ikea.com/au/en/p/lycksele-loevas-two-seat-sofa-bed-ebbarp-black-white-s89205055/
The rack is from Yakima.
Forgot to ask ,what model van did you end up buying as I'm looking into them myself ...Thanks for the inspo.
We’ve got the Hyundai iload. It’s a 2013 or 2014. It had a second row of seats but we pulled those out
Does that Clark rubber guy have painted nails? Wtf
Haha you've got good eyes
Pretty average conversion if you ask me.
I just did one up that kicks this ones ass beyond
Good one mate. It’s perfect for us and yours is probably perfect for you. Thanks for watching.
Tri Fit with Tim and Amanda your van is like what I want - low budget and minimalistic - I saw your other vid with the ikea sofa bed that fits perfectly. So helpful, thank you 🙏
Thanks for watching. We just wanted to get on the road and got what we needed. We see so many who spend so much money but hardly use anything. We might see you on the road 😊
Tri Fit with Tim and Amanda totally - I’ve got my second campervan and about to change to my third and minimal is best for me - simple and light for petrol consumption too. I don’t like cooking inside small spaces - the oil is absorbed into the air and furnishings around - so I don’t like kitchen and sink setups inside. Just a spray bottle with detergent and another with plain water and that helps to wipe over most things!
Perfect. Keep it simple
