Just for reference (because I haven't seen a single person pick up on it): Barbarian here is referring to both the old guy in the house and the offspring/daughter/victim/main antagonist. Attaching the -ian suffix to a place makes it an adjective describing the inhabitants of said place (e.g., a Bavarian is an inhabitant of Bavaria). Since the house is on Barbary Street, the old man and the offspring are both "Barbarians," hence the title.

    • @omegashinra7672
      @omegashinra7672 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Fuuuuuck you just blew my mind with this. The Barbary/Barbarian connection is the only legit link to the name of the film I've seen. The two owners of the house on Barbary are the 2 antagonists.

I just thought we get a little more understanding of what the weirdo was doing to these women I that room. Looking back at it though, I really appreciate the tonal shifts and the fact that it's so unpredictable- I mean who could have predicted that cut from the tunnel to Justin Long singing in his car? I'd say your criticisms on the scare factor line up with my own, but differ on what it means for the movie. For me, the scariest part was Tess finding that second set of stairs leading further down below the house, and I felt the tension deflate the second the Creature appeared on the screen. If my sole appreciate for the movie was based on how much it could deliver scares, that would be the end for me. But it's not. To say "there was a bit of a message to it" is an understatement.
Since reactions have to cut things up, I have to assume that when editing you feel the need to focus on what you think are the most important scenes. To me, cutting out AJ's talk with his agents, his conversation with his friend in the bar, the flashback with the home's original owner, and AJ seeing the tapes made by the owner indicates that they were not as high-priority, when to me, those are what the movie is actually *about.* The kind of creature the monster was wasn't picked from a dartboard to justify what was going on, it represented a festering of male abuse in the world, parallel to Justin Long's character. Through those scenes, we are repeatedly shown exactly what kind of person AJ is, from his outright denial, to lashing out at his victim, to admitting to what he did to his friend in the bar but not seeing anything wrong with it, to calling his victim, to refusing to listen to Tess, to shooting her, to using her as bait. It's abuse after abuse after abuse that's he's building up, but as long as he's confidently moving forward and dismissing blame, he can keep going.
It may not make for something that delivers as much tension or scares per minute as the beginning, but it's not really trying to do that. It just shifted focus. How much that resonates comes down to the viewer.

I love how this film players with casting: it sets up Bill Skarsgård as someone we know gets typecast as a creepy villains, and has him act very suspicious, and then has Justin Long who we know *should* be the comic relief or victim, and then just says "Nope" and knocks the legs out from under you and subverts the typecasting. Great casting, and great acting in every role. The plot is a little weak at the end yes, but you have to love the way this films plays with your expectations.

I genuinely love the opening scenes and dialogue between Tess and Keith. I thought it was really well-written and both actors pulled it off so naturally, while still conveying the awkwardness of Keith trying not to come off as a creep and Tess' understandable cautiousness. But then I completely disengaged with Tess after she went into the murder dungeon after Keith. What are you going to do, Tess? You didn't grab a weapon, this man who is bigger than you is clearly unable to return because of someone or something, and what if he is actually a creep and was luring you down there? What exactly was the plan? Go find help! And then she did it AGAIN with Justin Long's character, after not even knowing the guy for more than 5 minutes. The only reason I was rooting for her in the end is because I didn't want Weinstein Jr to be the last one standing. I have decades of experience suspending my disbelief with horror movie decisions, but for some reason this one really annoyed me and I can't say why. Maybe because she was making such good decisions in the beginning so the decision to race into some unknown danger without any thought seemed out of character?

The themes in this film run very deep. The clever structure of introducing a potential rapist (Bill Skarsgard), a possible rapist (Justin Long) and then a terrifyingly real serial rapist (Richard Brake), then blurring the distinctions between them is what keeps the audiences sympathies and perspectives shifting. The men are the Barbarians, including the police officers who don't believe/or help the lead character. The fact that it takes place in a neighborhood that has been totally gutted and pillaged as if by barbarians of yore is a nice touch, and underscores that societal stability is undergirded by FAMILIES; and this is reflected in the sympathy of the monster, who is protective and wants a family.
I think to, the strength of the monster (which viewers seem to take as very unbelievable or ridiculous) is being taken too literally. I think it's more metaphorical than that. I think it is meant to symbolize women's tenacity, strength and resilience, especially MOTHERHOOD. Our main character repeatedly goes back to save the other men; our monster is such a strong mother that she'll leap off a building to save her "child," and is so apoplectic about the violence, cowardice and horribleness of men that she can rip a head in two!
Ultimately, the main protagonist has more in common with the monster because they are both women; likewise in a line, Bill Skarsgard's "nice guy" routine is still just a long term game to get laid, making him closer to Justin Long. Justin Long, who went further and probably date raped somebody then in turn becomes thematically closer to the man in the basement.
It's just a really rich movie.

Even going to a Detroit Pistons game I saw a abandoned burned down car on the side of the road, few crackheads skittering about, and quite a few abandoned buildings/houses. It's strange, because just a block or two away and you can find a nice area. The Detroit area is a very interesting place in the US.

I think the ending was fantastic. They didn’t even make the monster to be one dimensional as a character. Or that Justin Long was the true Barbarian, or the old man, and the monster was a victim as well. Not sure how they could have ended it better. Also the mystery of what is down there that is worse than the lady monster? There were so many tunnels and the cages, who knows?
I do think another suspicious thing about Keith was that he had no car with him. He would just be there, so you had to wonder if he was the owner and just luring Tess into trusting him. Because if it were a taxi or Uber, I would never drive to that neighborhood. By the way, that is how parts of some cities are in America (Detroit, Baltimore, etc), ravaged by blight. It’s very eerie, and I like how movies have taken advantage, like It Follows, Don’t Breathe, and Barbarian.

I also appreciate the real horror of the neighborhood. That happens. My grandparents lived in a neighborhood in Detroit that was quite nice. They moved when it started going downhill. Tracking it on Google Street View through the years we watched the area go to hell. Houses falling apart. It was an urban area but started to look like it was in a wilderness. Showing that change in the movie and then layering in a horror below that was the human version of long term rot and decay? Very effective. And I don't compare Long to the old man but to the mommy monster. You see her and she's a monster until you discover she herself is actually a victim. By contrast, Long seems a victim but in fact is himself a. Monster in disguise. I really liked it all the way through.

Justin btw did a phenomenal job. The levity he provides was a great respite. But I also found the film campy in a good way. The brutal way the Mother killed the homeless man or how she saved Tess from the fall were so incredibly ridiculous and insane and fun and it made me and my best friend laugh in the theater tbh. Surprisingly I was also moved by the Mother at the end and the choice to play Be My Baby in the bacgkground was just chef's kiss. Btw I heard that the director wanted Justin Long's death scene to be way more gruesome but they had time/production constraints. Nonetheless, that ending was so damn satisfying.

The film has a near perfect knowledge and manipulation of horror film grammar. The shots, expectations, staging, scenes and pace. And it still manages to feel original or fresh. Every question, every reaction we have, especially questioning their actions in certain situations is prompted on purpose by the film. If there's any criticism, it's what Tom said, in that, it almost gets in its own way and doesn't land on a clear story type. Either way, a blessing for genre fans.

That's us with every guy, in public or not, day or night. Is he sweet and kinda awkward or is he going to kill me while I sleep? I loved that about this movie, kept us guessing the whole time then BAM. It kind of flipped the usual tropes. As for the neighborhood, Detroit Michigan USA which has alot of neighborhoods like that and is just slowly being renovated over many years. I think the neighborhood in Don't Breathe was like this too. And another thing is that yes they had to show the breastfeeding scene bc it was to show the sexual assaulter being assaulted, just in a different way. He was being made to do something he didn't want to happen. We were supposed to be horrified

It's definitely paying homage to movies like The Hills Have Eyes and such, but the really horrifying thing is that the isolation that leads to the situation (and the resultant horror) takes place entirely in an urban area. It shows how isolated we have all become, even in the biggest and most populated cities in the world. Chilling to think about, and that really hit home. Loved your reactions to it, guys. They used Skarsgard's previous casting to trick the audience to cast a doubt on him. Also, apparently the director placed all of the 'red flags' behaviors on his character early in the scene to make the audiences feel unsettled.
Also, this film highlights the fact that we, just like the protagonist, often ignore our internal alarm bell despite our conviction that we are careful people. We always excuse it under "Ah, they seem harmless and charming to boot", "I'm just imagining things", "It will be fine, I'm rattled for nothing". When in reality, we should definitely NOPE out the minute our internal alarm bell blaring, warning us that something about someone or a place is off.

OK guys...I must say that I usually really like your reactions, but I'm really disappointed this time. This movie was so so good as audiences have attested too. It really is just about a perfect horror movie in every way. I don't think I've ever seen you two try so hard to find holes to criticize it for. And asking "has it been done before?" is just such a let down. If you try you can pretty much compare every new movie to a movie from the past and say it's been done before...but so what? Even if a story is similar to a past one...that doesn't mean it's not still a great movie on it's own merit. I don't think I've been to a movie in the theater that had as big of a terrified reaction from the entire audience as when I saw this. And I think you need to watch your own reactions back because this movie did exactly what it set out to do to the both of you VERY effectively. I'm sorry but at the end there it just seemed like you were both trying to convince yourselves that you were smarter than the movie than appreciating this movie for it's brilliance. Sometimes you should just enjoy the film guys.

As a small piece of insight, Cregger talked about the first third with Bill Skarsgard being a Takashi Miike film (specifically Audition) where the whole thing was about ambiguous sexual threat between men and women. He based all of his questionable interactions with her (saying her name is pretty, making her tea, acting cagey, offering for her to stay, stressing what a nice guy he was) on a book called 'The Gift of Fear' that's about all of the red flags men put off to women without realizing it. Out of context it's benign, but in context totally inappropriate, which is great because it totally has you questioning his intentions every step of the way. The basement stuff is, according to Cregger, a Sam Raimi tribute. The whole directing style changes completely and it turns into a gonzo horror film, which I love.
I see the ending being completely justified for a few reasons. The Mother character being the most absurd, horrifying product of abuse imaginable works for me because when you're catastrophizing these uncertain situations you end up thinking about crazy things like torture basements, assault, etc. Tess finds herself living the worst case scenario possible. The Mother being revealed to be sympathetic is one of those great horror moments where it makes the audience check their own assumptions a little. The Barbarians in the film are most definitely Richard Brake's character and Justin Long. Their meeting in the basement is the meeting of two awful, kindred spirits. Long establishes early that he definitely assaulted his costar, and finds ways to self-justify, exactly in the same way he tells himself he'll be better before pushing Tess off the water tower. Tess alternately, is revealed to be an altruist. She puts others before herself, and in the end learns the hardest of lessons that she can't survive living like that.
I think all of it is super character forward and makes sense especially on rewatch. The Mother is meant to be a pretty uncomfortable entity, and seeing it again you pick up on so many minor details that reconfirm why each character does what they do, even if it isn't what I myself would- which is great! Can't appreciate this thing enough for making its first mission to be entertaining and surprising as hell while also addressing some very queasy upsetting themes. It has restraint in all the right places, is beautifully directed, and that structure is pretty extraordinary for a modern horror imo. I'd give it a solid 9/10 which I don't do that often.

I generally agree, the first and second act are brilliant, with the third a slightly tepid finish, but all in all a solid horror. Excited to see more work from the write/director. Brilliant reaction video boys (hell, even my Ma has gotten into watching you and enjoying your videos too!) 😃
Couple of quick points I wanted to make that I felt were important here:
When I first saw this upon release, my reaction post-viewing was pretty much the same as yours - this feeling of not quite being sure how I felt about it as a cohesive whole, but really enjoying it all the same. The thing is, give it a few months or so and come back to it. I guarantee you it’s even better upon a second watch, as you have some understanding of its structure and you get to see it for how subversive it actually is and flipping conventions on their head in many ways.
Tbh, I’m no Horror fan - my brother is a huge gore-hound though - but this is a perfectly-pitched Horror movie for me. For some reason it reminds me of “Cabin in the Woods” - but that movie left me wanting with its ending. (I wished they had just pushed it a little more into the absolutely unimaginable transpiring as I felt the shock wasn’t nearly pronounced enough). Anyway, I’m rambling - trust me: watch it again in several months time and I guarantee you’ll appreciate it a whole lot more second time around, especially if you’re able to watch it with others who’ve not seen it and don’t know what to expect.
Finally, I found it interesting that nobody ever seems to mention how Keith’s immediate reaction is that he doesn’t believe Tess - which is a whole other layer going on there too!
I’d love to know if you see this comment guys, as I really do reckon you’ll love it even more 2nd time around. So if you do get to read this, throw it a comment or an emoji - hell, throw it a comment! (Just don’t throw the “babbehhh” out with the bathwater) 😬
