    Gee, I wish I could build my older brother a bike. He was a bike guy, but passed in 2019. Before he died, he talked of the dream bike he wanted to build. It would never happen, of course. He didn’t have that kind of money. But after he passed, I had to build it. No option. It’s gorgeous. It would be so cool to see him ride it.
    That was my first build. Building as a hobby has gotten way out of hand since.

I haven’t figured out how to put cable housing from the rear guide to the brakes, like v brakes require.

    That's about all you get in trade w 26" wheels these days. I have a 2008 Spec Enduro in immaculate condition, but I prolly couldn't get $500 bc it has 26." The bike is a 150mm/160 monster too. It just collects dust now. I have many other newer bikes. It needs a home. I believe you fixed one of those up awhile ago. It is a terrible pedaling bike, but it smashed features. I just don't think you could get the same range of gear choices with a 1x set-up as the 3X spec'd on theses older bikes. Nice vid. Good on you taking care of the family.

      The standard is around 120 mm. You can use a different length if you slightly want to change the chainline (the goal is to have a straight chain in the gear you use the most time) but at the end 2 mm don't play a huge role on a recreational bike

    • @simonm1447

    • @maddiethompson101
      @maddiethompson101 ปีที่แล้ว

      But how would the cassette bond to the free hub body? It’s attached with a lock ring, not any threads. Plus, galvanic corrosion is unlikely because most cassettes are steel and most FHBs are aluminum. If anything, you’d want to put grease on the lock ring, that’s the part that would possibly seize up if the bike wasn’t taken care of.

    I think your brother won the trade. I have I think a 1997 Zaskar that was a bare aluminum frame that I spent hours listening to the radio while polishing it with sandpaper and putting new stickers on.
    The guy who owned it before me had tried to change it to a single speed but screwed up and just gave up on it. I ended up putting a Surly fork on it and putting the old components on it and changing it back to a multi-speed bike. I think 21 speeds.

    Hi :)
    a question
    I do have old 26" frame, and I will make a bike out of it.
    However is there any headset brand that would allow a 1 1/8 fork into a frame that had a 1" fork in it?
    and yes 1 1/8 tube goes hru the frame.
    Can you help?

    • @simonm1447
      @simonm1447 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is the fame specially made for 1 '' forks or is it a frame made for 1 1/8'' with a 1 inch fork in it? Second thing works with the right headset, but a 1 1/8 '' fork would not fit into a 1 '' frame. If it fits it might be a frame for 1 1/8''.

    • @ExcelInstructor
      @ExcelInstructor ปีที่แล้ว

      @@simonm1447 Hi.
      The frame is made for 1" fork (cos I measured the shaft of old fork)
      but when I putthe shaft from 1 1/8" it fits also but with less clearance.
      Thats why I need some sort of exterior headset for 1 1/8" that can be fitted into 1" frame

    • @simonm1447
      @simonm1447 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ExcelInstructor What's your exact inner diameter of the steerer tube of the frame? It seems the standard inner diameter of a 1 inch steerer tube is 30.0 mm, while a 1 1/8 inch fork has a fork tube diameter of 28,6 mm, which gives you 1,4 mm clearance. Unfortunately the cups go into the 30 mm inner diameter and further reduce the width, and I'm not sure if there is a external cup headset with less than 0,7 mm wall thickness.
      Some frames seem to have different sizes than 30 mm (depending on local standards), if it's more it will be possible with the right headset.

    I’m willing to bet that those who have close brothers were watching to see if you put a little extra effort into the build for him. I know I was. What’s amazing is that I didn’t see it. just the same old meticulous perfection we’re all used to.
    I take that to mean that every bike build is a Monet, painted to excellence solely for the sake of the art. The end result? Your brother gets the masterpiece.
