    His friends did the right thing. What a nutcase. Imagine her parents having to come pick up her body only 6 weeks after she went to Australia. It's sickening that life imprisonment is the best they can do. Why did he even try to weasel his way out of it? It's only free room and board for the rest of his life. Not a real punishment. Just a minor inconvenience of not being able to step out anytime he felt like it. Not even a fraction of what she suffered.

    Absolutely disgusting. There are people out there who genuinely suffer from a range of mental illness, but this kid decides to use it conveniently as an excuse to justify his actions. In my opinion, justice wasn’t served especially when he seemed to have 0 remorse. Parole is also ridiculous especially for cases like murder and repeated rapes. RIP Eunji and I hope your family has found peace somehow.

    Eunji poor thing! Hearing about her routine, she must have been such a hardworking person. I am glad that horrible kid(back then) got life in prison because if he didn't what guarantee is that he won't do it again to another stranger just because he was in the mood to kill someone. I am glad his friends did the right thing and reported him to the police. Plus the fact that this dude Alex was worried his mother would be heartbroken, is the biggest bs, he should have thought how the victims parents must have felt losing a child.

    What does it say about society when we women are advised to be extra cautious, putting the onus on us rather than inadequately punishing perpetrators. Thankfully, in this case, the Ban family received justice. Yet we have to be extra cautious to 'avoid' attacks.

    • @WoodlandGloom
      @WoodlandGloom หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      It's the misogyny and "well hurr men can't help it" attitude. Then they get mad when we become man-"hating" or avoid men entirely because "not all men." I know women can be perpetrators as well but the overwhelming majority is always men committing these crimes and women their victims, and when men ARE victimized, 99% of the time its by other men.
      I'm someone who's extra cautious to the point of ridiculousness because of where I live and it *still* did not keep me safe on several occasions, yet the blame and responsibility always falls on who again, to be careful? I'm sick and tired of living like a prey animal.

      While I do think there’s some utility for police to encourage women take steps to stay safe, such as validating women who don’t feel safe and dispersing the accusations of being paranoid, as far too many women are gaslighted out of following their self preservation instincts, I do still agree with you, the police shouldn’t be silent about the unacceptable behaviours of men. There’s no excuse as to why the police don’t use their platform to call out men’s unacceptable levels of violence and threaten them with the full force of the law for noncompliance.
      It doesn’t really matter if it does or doesn’t impact the likelihood of these crimes being committed, it would at least establish a societal expectation against men being violent. Being totally silent on the matter allows a culture that passively accepts it as the norm, we should instead be proactively vocal in condemning such vile, animalistic behaviour.
      The only thing violent men fear are other men who are cable of more violence, so the ability for police to present themselves as something these men should fear is essential to counteracting men’s proclivity to violence.

      This stuff has been drilled into us since before puberty, WE KNOW and we DO adhere by it. The issue is none of these things WILL keep you safe 100% they may increase safety but they're still not failsafes. (these still failed me on two separate occasions and both times I had to run to get help and both times many people ignored me, only one older woman helped + the other time I had to hide out in a shopping store for more than an hour.) Women who do ALL of these still wind up kidnapped/raped/murdered, not to mention TONS of areas make it illegal to carry even pepper-spray or tasers (like the area I live in and cannot move somewhere that allows it) We need to stop putting the issue of safety on women alone and hold men accountable for their actions. Nobody is telling men to be careful about going out/who they see/ect.

    • @Musiknird
      @Musiknird หลายเดือนก่อน +16

      @@WoodlandGloomThis! We had this case in Sweden when a serial rapist managed to keep a whole town in fear due to his actions. The police had a press conference on how women should be safe and not go out in the evening. This caused an uproar and protests among all the women in that town demanding the police to put a curfew for men to stay inside and not going out after 6 in the evening and the police actually listened to the women and made the men stay inside. Under those weeks that this happened until they had arrested the serial rapist all the crime statistics plummeted. No assaults, no robberies, no brawls, no murders, no vandalism etc. Women could safely walk the streets meeting up with their girlfriends for drinks. No creeps hovering and praying on them at the pub or clubs and no one got their drinks spike. Sadly everything went back to "normal" after the rapist was arrested.

    Mental illness shouldn't be a viable option anymore in court. Killers like that guy will always abuse it, and I'm guessing a lot of killers escaped justice because of this. The prosecution got lucky that they managed to prove that the lies were untrue and that he was a terrible actor. I know that this is an unpopular opinion, but what if the killer is a good actor and because of it, the killer escape justice?
    RIP to Eunji Ban.

      The training to determine if an accused is malingering or not, that means official faking, training in intellectual delays then how most common mental health symptoms which are very related and share common base symptoms and come on certain times with what factors, nature vs nurture. , and courts in America at least have not guilty by reason of mental defect or disorder and it's higher level of absolute inability to appreciate the action is a crime/ wrong , a person can have mental illness but still be fully accountable, it's so amazing how humans all try to fake mental illness in such similar ways, and past health and clean up methods even can be the absolute no , not criminal insane and fully accountable. Id love to go into detail cuz it's fascinating not a good thing for me to explain here, but a good liar isn't a challenge with basic degree

    Hi Megan i well remember this horrible crime as i was living in Brisbane at the time... Brisbane being my home town. ALL of Brisbane and the wider community were shocked, saddened and angry that this could happen to one of our overseas guests in our country in our city. There was a lot of print about this with regular Australian people expressing their heartfelt sorrow not only for Eunji but also for her family that had to travel here to claim and bury their daughter... It was reported in local papers that the killer had dragged her by the leg along the foot path and up the concrete stairs with her head hitting each step to where she was left .... what a disgusting individual the killer is ... not worthy of the title of Human Being..i don't even want to mention his name.. To say we were outraged by this crime is understated and many locals wanted his blood !! The greater community wanted the death sentence for this.. Personally i still sometime think about Eunji and it saddens me even after all this time... this crime against her has left a mark on many including myself.. I don't know how her parents managed to even draw a breath after this. 😪

    He 100% did not have schizophrenia. People with actual schizophrenia in this case would have diminished culpability because they can’t tell the difference between reality and delusion. He is just a pure psychopath. I mean the most dangerous kind. He doesn’t have empathy, he will never truly be sorry, and if he is released he very much will try it again. I don’t know the laws of Australia on parole but I sincerely hope he is never released as he is a threat to every potential person he comes across.

      Please please please stay alert when traveling. Tourist predators are getting more common it seems. It's usually completely fine but after hearing cases of women being assaulted even when large groups are nearby I need everyone to travel with a sense of wariness. Not even for the locals but from other tourists. Because they leave their own country or take cruises to basically reduce their chances of being caught or prosecuted. Americans have tried and were mad they faced consequences when they got home. But if their military?? It's so bad for women traveling right now. They still haven't found Nancy Ng. So please. Take precautions. You deserve to see the world without someone snatching you up with bad intentions. Get some self defense items like an air horn if you can. Most places won't let you travel with a weapon but air horns are mostly just annoying so that's at least an alarm system if you can't speak for some reason. Make sure it is LOUD. Like the ones they sell at stadiums. Especially if you plan on hiking. Stay safe and travel well.

    He had no schizophrenia, but i think he may have antisocial personality disorder with/ or narcissistic personality disorder. The lack of empathy, the seemingly enjoyment in the attention given to him after confessing? I think he is a narcissist.

      He has antisocial personality disorder (which used to be called psychopathy) with heavy psychopathic traits. I’ve never seen a clearer case for it.
