yes Vincent Bohanan... you making me feel old LOL..... my bro and i flew from the UK (he is sitting behind Butch in the Blue shortsleeved shirt) for this historical concert so that we could learn the Brooklyn Style organ from Uncle Butch.....because this was before You Tube it was the only way we were going to learn the Brooklyn Style..... The 3 Organists that stood out for me that night was Butch, James and Tiyorne Coleman... I feel proud that we were able to capture this history because back then when most mobile phones did not have a movie camera record function so we travelled with proper camcorders and minidisk audio recording facilities..... I do remember seeing this little boy in the bow tie on the front row and marveling at how dedicated and caught up in the music...... never did I think that little boy was you today lol..... God be praised.
Finger movements become second nature, he memorized sheet music and embellished as he saw fit. This is true for any instrument. He is thinking about his vocals I guarantee. That "Mercy and" he squalls out, Hallelu ^_^.
this vid has only made me a bigger fan of James Hall. Never realized how many musical changes there were in this song. He is so talented. Thanks for posting. ...I wonder if Melvin Crispell is still with the group.
Thank you @sircroft1. And for the other people that don't know on James Hall & Voices of Citadel the song is entitled "I Shall Dwell in the House of the Lord"
Once at a music workshop I heard a choir singing Jesus can work it out as I was going yo my room to take a nap. When I got back from the nap and headed out it was still going. So I had to see. The soloist was standing on a dinner table singing while the choir was chanting work it out. LOL I stayed until it was finished. World record maybe....
yep I wrote out this song ....scored it and taught it to my choir 15 years ago... it is so complex..... and the bit that got me is I assumed that the chorus where they modulate ? I thought it was the same key both times..... but if I remember correctly the first modulation is to Eb and the 2nd time around it is to Ab. This created more work for me writing it out LOL but it's absolute Genius........ I had to also get my hands around that Brooklyn Style .... but having learned at the feet of Uncle Butch and also studying the style I didn't find playing it too difficult.
wait a minute....first I thought Youthful Praise recorded this first, now I don't know what to think.lol....and the date??? wow, '99??. this song is old!lol
@Institutionalkid @Institutionalkid What album is this song on? I want to cop it. Some say James Hall's version is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than YP.
It wasn't a service .... it was a concert and it was Rocking...... I think the real issue is that the congregation were so acustomed to such high level music that they were not as in awe of the music as they should have been. but for us guys from the UK it blew out minds...... nothing like this music in the UK back then..
if I remember correctly Eddie was around early twenties? and butch was around 40 years old? this concert made our 4000 mile trip from the UK so worthwhile.
Same chords as God wants a 🙌 yes!
