Diverting infantry to artillery defense means that you weaken your army by one unit that will not be active In general, historically, artillery has always stood IN FRONT of the infantry and almost always took the blow on itself, the main task of the gunners was to bombard the enemy with cannonballs and buckshot BEFORE the enemy infantry or cavalry reached them, but often the gunners were a bargaining chip and almost everyone died.
@AntonReut I have played this game before actually. But yk they could have a infantry unit just beside the arty unit or stand behind it and turn off fire at will? And yeah you will be down 1 unit but eh to me personally it doesn't feel like that big of a deal.
@@SinningsValor "and turn off fire at will" - this mechanic does not exist in the game, infantry always shoot through their own artillerymen and damage them. You can of course cancel firing on readiness, but it's too complicated micromanagement, there's usually no time for that.
