At time of independence I think Govt focused on right things and address the most important issues like poverty, hunger, employment etc. Had they gone for nuclear weapons that time first huge amount of funds was needed and if they use the amount on nuclear weapons then they definitely had to comprises with the funds which allocated in addressing the issue of poverty etc.. Then consequences could be if we looked to make nuclear weapons then it could create an environment of resurrection of our own people and it could lead to disastrous things.. I think Indian Govt did the right thing and first they looked to strengthen the internal problems of the country instead of making nuclear weapons..

I am agree that India have had to starting develop the nuclear technology in 1960's however it was need to adopt a better political overview and encourage investments and Co-ordination alongwith basic needs and infrastructure projects.
Lal Bahadur Shashtri was such a visionary leader. We owe him a lot. India's first reformist.
