Teacher here. Beware knowledge-free, problem based learning. Would you want to be operated on by a general surgeon who didn't have a comprehensive understanding of anatomy? Project-based learning is an excellent component of a balanced curriculum that prioritizes foundational understanding, but it cannot replace foundational understanding. And sorry, that foundational understanding needs to be assessed in empirical ways, maybe by filling in bubbles.
Fellow educator here, and I was thinking the same thing. “Yes, Doctor? Do you try hard and are you curious? Well, let’s begin the surgery!”One method of learning is not always best for every objective. Everyone is different and learns in different ways.

I’m not a big fan of Mr. Brooks but his take on k-12 education is nonsense…PBL has been working its way through system since the beginning mid 90s; brain research in the last 20 years has determined that IQ is not fixed/static, it will increase over time if the brain is consistently stimulated…ugh

I hate when people who have never taught in K-12 public schools think they can speak knowledgeably about the problems created by schools. Schools do not destroy curiosity. Teachers love creativity in their students and do not feel a need to quash it in order to meet standards. They love it because it fuels motivation and enlivens the class. Curiosity--like motivation, kindness, creativity, or social intelligence--is not distributed evenly to all people, and it is not "lost" due to schooling.
Yeah, teachers get hit from the right and the left. And no one really appreciates the work they do, the sacrifices they make, and the dangers they face on a daily basis. I am not a teacher, but work on education policy, so I appreciate you and try my best to support your efforts in the classroom.
Well, I have taught in K-8 schools and think you are misunderstanding David’s point due to your particular situation. He’s not saying individual teachers don’t appreciate or try to nurture creativity, but that focus on standardized testing overall has quashed it. I taught in a school , with a disadvantaged population, that was going to taken over by the state if our scores did let come up. In the months before the state tests, all instruction other than math and reading was shut down by our admins and everything was restructured to focus solely on test-relevant skills. These kids were 3-4 years behind grade level in reading skills, mostly due to having no vocabulary-building personal experiences in their lives.
Standardized testing, cutting important critical thinking courses such as civics, American history, english classes so students can actually write a decent letter, reading classic books and have discussion. We have dumbed down our education in the nation. Thanks to George W and No Child Left Behind
Just had to say, I've had some great teachers from a variety of schools. But billionaires are meant to run other things, not be in charge of the intimate lives of people. Their success relies on completely different sets of circumstances and rely on entirely different sets of outcomes. "Profit per unit" isn't one of them. People aren't products. That's why this will be a circus. Italy had a billionaire too -- Berlusconi ran its economy into the ground to where its citizens left in droves for jobs.

The high price of education is a barrier to those who would like to go, I graduated in 1982 and my tuition at a small women's college for 5,000 a year! My Dad was the first in his family to go to college and wanted us to do the same. Now I wouldn't recommend the high bill even though I valued my education. I learned critical thinking, that I excelled at religion and philosophy and my confidence grew in a wonderfully supportive environment. I agree about being curious and have social emotional skill for success. Happily my son has those skills and has started his own painting business. He is curious, caring, and stays informed. But a traditional school was not for him and I couldn't help him with the cost.
Most Western countries offer free college education. That doesn't entirely democratize it, but it does avoid the massive difference between those with and without a college degree. This is why Harris' accent on allowing workers without a college degree to work for the federal government and incite the business world to do the same was so important. But with no MSM picking up on the idea and amplifying it, it all died in the noise created by Trump and his latest utterly distracting tweet...
Social media and money. There are many things that have divided America in the last 40 or so years but in recent years the most divisive has been social media and money.
Na. Social media is A reason, not the only one but a contributing factor. Colleges are longer, slower, more insidious. People don't learn in high school because they aren't going to college. People don't have the money, so why bother studying? I'm never going. I'm just going to be working the family farm, I don't need a College degree for that. People grow up thinking I can never get in, guess I'll just rob the gas stationd and go to jail. It's to far away and cost to much. I'm not smart enough, College is only for smart kids and I fail English (undiagnosed dyslexia) College is only if I get a sports scholarship and I'm bad at football. Removing barriers and changing thoughts is slow hard work, this IS a social issue but more of a long running underlying one rather than a modern expression as seen on twitter.

This man makes a lot of sense, especially about education. With the entire knowledge of the world at our fingertips, it’s not as important how much we KNOW (unless it’s in the field we want to go into). It’s our motivation & original thinking of how we perceive our world & how we interact with it. Our society should think more about the WHY. Think outside of the box, because we CAN. Students should not be following directions blindly, especially when they want to understand the WHY!

I would like to respectfully ask Mr. Brooks when he lasted visited an elementary school (public)? After 32 years in education I can attest in our district in Oregon that teachers begin most lessons by introducing the lesson and immediately ask students what they know and what they are CURIOUS about the subject. Education is absolutely centered on learning and performing in groups. Teachers are teaching students how to speak and actively listen in groups. Further, it was the No Child Left Behind ( George W Hush) that catapulted public education into an insane amount of standardized testing. At first the pendulum did swing to “teaching to the test,” however, professional educators soon realized this was absurd. Thankfully in Oregon we never linked teacher’s pay to state test results. Our pendulum has swung to teaching what kids need and the standards. State Testing now happens only once a year, so more instruction can happen. Lastly, I agreed with your description of another way to educate children in the US. In our district the “woke” superintendent tried to lessen the sorting of children and she no longer works for our districts. Parents would need A LOT of education/communication to get on board. Can schools improve? Yes. Do students learn better when there is a parent/teacher relationship? Yes. Do all students have supportive, engaged parents? No and it’s because they are working 2 jobs or having to work at night. We need to change education by also bolstering up and supporting the parents so they can be engaged.
This could be one of the best episodes. He is spot on about school. I am a former nyc high school teacher. I knew who was going to be successful regardless of his/her grades in the first month.
Please read Emotional Intelligence and Social Intelligence both by Daniel Goldman PhD. You will understand why IQ is not as important as Social and Emotional IQ. I’m not saying intelligence isn’t important but if it’s not balanced or rounded out by the other two, we suffer as humans in social settings and team work scenarios. Most of life is social and team oriented.
I grew up in Cambridge, MA. I remember up until 1971, Harvard had an acceptance policy to admit 2 students from each U.S. State with the goal of developing leaders with Harvard degrees in every state - to benefit that state and thus our country. The students were chosen with excellent academic skills and with well rounded abilities - with something else that made them a valued member of their state, their classrooms, their families and they were most often NOT rich. In 1971, Derek Bok was made President of Harvard the admission policy changed.... Bok, who came from Stanford, was much more interested in building up the coffers for Harvard and not in making a difference in terms of leaders that a democracy would need in every state. His less than altruistic stance was that of backing corporate America which changed our country.
@@niaplatt_youtube9429 2 from each state as part of their admissions policy. There were more but they made sure each state was represented was my point. And those 2 were not chosen for how much $$ their family had.
And No Child Left Behind, left behind many children who would have benefitted from apprenticeships in many industry that now are pay to attend technical institutes - that training should be part of high school curriculum!

Why waste time blaming the Ivy League colleges for the problem. Our country is full of colleges and universities that educate about 40% of our high-school graduates. Individuals rejected by the Ivy League can find a good education and profit from their education. Our country offers education for every student (who can afford the fees.)
My sons went to a school as David Brooks describes. No grades. They both got into good universities and did well. I also commend Mr. Brooks' comments about goals not being static. The more we learn, the more we develop goals and aspirations. I am a serious opponent to schools that have 'pathways,' guiding high school students toward a career before they know much. People need experiences over time. Indeed, there is a lot to be said for those who change their career pathways in their 30s and beyond. Why not??
I agree with your caste theory, but there is an even deeper divide, the haves and have nots. The have nots are 60% of society struggling pay check to paycheck. Help is needed now, it shouldn't be a talking point.

I agree their needs to be balance. In math, we do more problem based learning (story problems and guided discovery) and only a couple projects.
Fellow educator here, and I was thinking the same thing. “Yes, Doctor? Do you try hard and are you curious? Well, let’s begin the surgery!”One method of learning is not always best for every objective. Everyone is different and learns in different ways.

The other half are non-college educated or only hold a 2 yr community college degree. Sure,
Halfway through this, I remember why I can't take David Brooks seriously. He's not just a shallow thinker. He just makes things up where he has gaps in his knowledge.
I taught in a school
, with a disadvantaged population, that was going to taken over by the state if our scores did let come up. In the months before the state tests, all instruction other than math and reading was shut down by our admins and everything was restructured to focus solely on test-relevant skills. These kids were 3-4 years behind grade level in reading skills, mostly due to having no vocabulary-building personal experiences in their lives.
If anything, most teachers now work two jobs: meeting standards and inspiring children despite standards
Your school doesn’t place heavy emphasis on STAR/standardized testing? It’s tied to school funding for most states.

My Dad was the first in his family to go to college and wanted us to do the same. Now I wouldn't recommend the high bill even though I valued my education. Most Western countries offer free college education. That doesn't entirely democratize it, but it does avoid the massive difference between those with and without a college degree. With the entire knowledge of the world at our fingertips, it’s not as important how much we KNOW (unless it’s in the field we want to go into). I am over 60 and ask many more questions than when I was really young.

I think paying laborers well would make a huge difference. The world can’t turn without them, but we’re paying so many so few. People go to Ivies to brag and get rich. The connections they make are worth millions later.
First term he cared about popularity, this time is about pure power. The more people he can punish the better in his eyes.
When David S. Brooks was put on the op-ed page of the NYT, I let my subscription lapse after decades of reading. When he said in April 2003 on the News Hour, "How could anyone have opposed this war." - I stopped listening to that program. Brooks and George F. Will were apologists for the fascism we face now. They did their part to bring it into existence. Listening further, Brooks doesn't seem to have a clue about how capitalism has eviscerated the non-elite into insecurity. Harvard and Yale , with all their faults, didn't do this. So much of what David says about education is absolute nonsense because to do something about it would necessitate a massive investment that ain't gonna happen. Nobody opposes redistribution of wealth more than David S. Brooks and his friends - and that's what it would take.
@@DeanNataro 100%. Brooks imo is one of the worst GOP enablers for 24+ years. At least someone like Bill Kristol was upfront with his neocon garbage. Brooks is the mild mannered "centrist" Republican that slips the razor in the apple without you seeing and people get fooled into thinking he's an insightful thoughtful man. He's been wrong on nearly every issue for his entire career and he's never one gave a mea culpa for any of it. Despite being terrible at the one thing he's been hired to do he continues to be given high profile media platforms to continue his gentle toxicity cheerleading for the GOP and the current fascism we all have to deal with. Taught school, little kids. Intelligence, skills, test takers, social intelligence: sorting people take takes more energy than sorting plows back in the culture. “Can’t we just get along?” Thanks for this conversation.
David Brooks doesn't know his *ss from a hole in the ground. He helped cause this.
Amen
Thank you Tim for another informative show. I love the guest you choose.
David Brooks is important to listen to because he is becoming a rarity- a sane conservative. Thanks for having him on, Tim!
I found this episode so interesting because 1) I work at a high school, and 2) because I share a space with the school’s College & Career person. Thank you!
Brooks and Capehart are my spirit animals

Brooks' analysis is fascinating and I think makes a lot of sense.
