His sound is timeless and underappreciated. It's eerie desert music, wrapped in beauty. Delicate and measured, w a perfect dose of emotion.

Ry’s playing is non-pareil. I’ve been fortunate to see him several times over the years, in club and auditorium venues. Seeing him in club performances is at the top to of my music-going experiences. There are some players you see and think I want to play like that. But with Ry you just sit back in awe.

The way Ry compliments his singing with his guitar playing reminds me so much of the old recordings of Robert Johnson. The emphasis is on accompanying and complimenting the lyrics rather than trying to dazzle with fancy licks.

This southern country gal loves his voice! I can't believe he was born in Cali, he sounds like the kinda kinfolk I sat around many a campfire singing and playing guitars with in my youth. Fantastic song and I'm so glad that you finally did something with Ry Cooder, he is one of the best slide players there is and his sound is so Louisiana Bayou Country♡I may be saying it wrong but I have always thought about his style being Cajun through and through, a music like most other genres goes back a long ways♡He makes me feel like I'm on the porch of a house built on stilts eating crawfish and listening to Creole, that good old bastardize French language from those rough f****** that settled here a long time ago! Don't go swimming in that water man, got to watch out for them Gators!!

I was exchange student in Ca. Ry Cooder was a family friend and lived in the same block. Met him many times and he was always really nice, laid back and kept his both feet on the ground. Good memories! ...and I remember wearing my best rock concert shirt the first time to underline that I also play guitar. Ry is on another level for sure- he offers so many intangible qualities.
No question he played on countless albums I've never thought of him as a studio session player- he transcends that role. He produces, collaborates..... as a player he is incredible for making space for other players while keeping it interesting.
Tons of great Ry Cooder performances- check "Streets of Bakersfield" with Dwight Yoakum at a Buck Owen's tribute. The entire set is tremendous.

@@wingsofpegasus The movie, The Buena Vista Music Club, was produced by Ry. I didn't actually see it until a few years after it had been released to great acclaim. I believe it even won a/some Oscars as a documentary & for the soundtrack. While It's kind of slow in the beginning, establishing the musicians' difficult lives under Castro's Cuba & the reasons why they had ceased playing together, etc, (it's been a long time since I saw it), but Fil, as a musician, budding musicologist, & overall HUGE music lover, you REALLY should see it.The film documents how this renowned group of top Cuban musicians, most of which, due to the revolution, basically, COMPLETELY stopped playing as professional musicians, or together, if at all, for whatever reasons, & how the amazing Ry Cooder brings them back together, somehow, 50 +, or so, YEARS LATER, for a reunion performance to be filmed & recorded. Let me tell you, baby, when these elderly men, most 75- 80+ years old, get out there on that stage the night of the big performance, after ALL those DECADES, well, it makes me tear up JUST thinking about it & how incredibly YOUTHFUL, inspiring, timeless & fantastic these OLD, long-ago forcibly "retired" musicians became, once more, THROUGH their music & their performance, together...SIGH...It is VERY moving &, for me, unforgettable, regardless of whether or not one's a particular fan of Afro-Cuban music. As busy as you undoubtedly are, if you haven't already, I sincerely hope that someday you will find the time to sit down & watch it, dear Fil...just be sure to have some tissues on hand, just in case...hehe...🎵🎶😕😖😭😢😌😳👌

Yeah man! Thanks so much for tossing Ry Cooder out on the table Fil. You can see why he's one of my all time favorite guitar players. More often than not session players are the best and play many instruments...they have to be if they want to eat! I hope you have the time to learn about the Mussel Shoals Swampers, who made many a group famous with their playing. From Aretha Franklin to Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, you name it, they backed it. Thanks again!
P.s. The Swampers were the entire band for Lynard Skynyrd s first album. That's why Ronnie Van Zan gives them a shout out on "Sweet Home Alabama".

Fil always a pleasure to hear your analysis. I’ve been into Ry since the first album. You should take a look at his performance of “Dark end of the street “ with the Chicken Skin Review. Now that’s some slide playing. Cheers

Fun to watch. I'd like to see you do a comment on more of his stuff, and especially his film work. His work on Paris, Texas, brought him together with Wim Wenders and Harry Dean Stanton in a sort of triumvirate of lyrical loneliness that it is hard to imagine ever being repeated and I don't think has been since. Shouldn't forget the amazing cinematography either, and the pacing unusual to today's times only a little more than it was to those times, especially in America. There is a weird blending of lush and sparse in that the vastness and loneliness isn't unpopulated by feeling, but somehow stoic in the midst of its overflow. In its own way it was a revisionist western regarding what the frontier really means, when souls become unanchored and life doesn't revolve around the fixed point of even life itself anymore. Who are you when you are not the preface to anything, when civilization isn't racing up behind? When your story has been cut loose and you're not part of a story or destiny anymore? Watch the movie, more than once, and see how you feel about it ... and match Ry's choices with the mythic landscape and cinematography, and the landscape of a face like Harry Dean Stanton's, and an outlook like Wim Wenders'.
I think you could lend another very interesting dimension to your channel by getting into film scores too. It might take more editing, though I think you could do a lot with stills.
And even if you didn't care for it much, Paris, Texas seems like a perfect foray into the complementary path that music and visuals go down. You've analyzed showman ship before, after all, in which it's about more than just excellent music, and music informs more than just itself ...

Wings of Pegasus Ty deserves two or three videos of attention. In addition to his shimmering slide work- Cooder is an absolute master of syncopation, how he plays in syncopation relative to a drummer like Jim Keltner or his son is so special.
He does that on Cash's song all his albums from the 1970's have great examples of syncopation.. superb feel for time and where the beat is and where on the beat he needs to be relative to a tune....
Another strong suit is his ability to follow the chord structure and he plays beautifully from the chords forms....

A measure of an artist is who he gets to play in his bands over the years. His sidemen are all world - eg Jim Keltner, Flaco Jiminez, the King Brothers etc

The term Virtuoso does not do enough justice to Ry Cooder. I was so fortunate to have been introduced to this artist via the "Paradise and Lunch" album. I finally got to see him 2 years ago at the Town Hall in NYC and he played this song Vigilante Man solo. The deep dark tone he conjures from his guitar (reminds me of Charlie Haden, RIP) is chilling - he is a storyteller supreme. In my opinion he is one of the greatest guitarists ever.

Ry Cooder's music, somehow, always relaxes me, his style and voice always seem to have this calming effect on me.
My uncle, who has been a Jazz musician for a good 65 years now, introduced Cooder's music to me in the early 80's, and i was hooked instantly to the style he has.
My uncle introduced me to a lot of musicians back in the days, and i am still very much thankful for that, i might forget a name or two (hundred) but the moment i hear them, i remember.
That one of the reasons i love this channel, you remind me of so many musicians that i know, but had forgotten or just couldnt remember the names of. (but not Cooder tho! lol, play his music regularly still)
Side track thingy, i came up with an idea for a small series you could do, if you have time available for it that is.
The idea is quite simple "the music of : Tarantino" with the focus on the songs he uses in his movies, maybe other directors would be interesting too (from dusk till dawn for instance, lovely sleazy music, and Tarantino is involved, so the movie would count hehe)
The idea is kinda, for you to have the ability to change your focus from how a song is made, to how it is used in a movie, and why, or what the impact is of the song for a certain scene.
I think with your knowledge, you should be able to easily pull that off, and i think you might enjoy doing a couple of videos in that style :) (change of pace thing)
Either way, its your channel and i'll watch anything you do, so do what you like to do, heck, i probly would still watch if you reviewed amazon giftbaskets lol.

Fil…I only recognize the Crossroads movie title and who played in movie (Ralph Macchio) but I don’t remember ever seeing it… I don’t know Ry Cooder but of course I know the groups that he played as a session player for. Just some of it was before my conscience adolescence. I will learn more……I really dig his voice! As you have said before about others, it suits his playing perfectly. Thanks for always expanding my musical horizon!……☮️❤️🤘

Ok I'm not sure if fil gets these comments I post on his site bit, as a long time musician with absolutely not pretending to be an expert. Although I enjoy playing no less. Just a heads up on how much I enjoy this channel. To listen to a person enjoy these great players is a joy especially from someone who obviously is a player himself. The very first show I ever saw was Ry Colder in 1969. I sat 6 ft. From the master and he's been a favorite since. And I think I've seen every single player you have portrayed. Again element channel. Thank you fil
