I always loved Ralphs take on this piece, also he sounded more like fats then anyone, and his playing was solid as a rock...and very consistent...never haphazard,as can happen even with some of the greatest stride players...never a hair out of place... just great.
Great! He really was one of the piano giants, unfortunatley a forgotten one. As an advice to everyone who did not; check out his recordings of the old Luckey(eth) Roberts tunes, his playing is great in that Album!
I can't agree with you saying he's forgotten. A genius is hardly forgotten , not by me! His work is a treat to hear! At 73, I never tired of hearing an ass kicking song. It goes double for the great swing bands of the 30's- 40's. WOW! What a time to grow up in!! Give me Harlem Stride any day!
I agree wholeheartedly he was stride genius BUT not forgotten ! I'm 73. Studied piano for 3+ years as 13 year old. Had a 66 key piano in my bedroom. A great thing to learn music. Much respect for stride and ragtime!
This is one of my favorite Ralph Sutton recordings. He takes The Lion's character and fuses it with Fats' rambunctious precision. Just a quick question that right hand riff over the Eb chord around 1:59, should there be a G4 underneath that riff? I hear a tenor note below the riff in the original recording.
No if your hands can reach those wider notes, it's totally humanly possible. It might take a decade or 2 to get good enough to play it, though 😅@danyaanbostic1778
