A marriage made in heaven. Many times, with Letterman, you get the feeling he is mocking the guest even a he interviews the guest. But with Regis, there was a real sense of admiration. A sense of mutual admiration.

The start of, in my opinion, the best guest/host combination in late night history

I never thought having Regis Philbin on once would work for "Late Night." But these two very different, awkward creatures of show biz kept striking a surprisingly human chord in one another.

Regis had two qualities that were huge for having such a regular role with Dave: always available and not hung up on personal dignity.

It is interesting to see how they become friends and comfortable with each other over the course of 13 minutes. Regis tries so hard to make Dave like him and Dave tries so hard not to fall for it and by the end of the segment they seem to have decided each is ok...wonderful TV.

Look at Regis master of the panel and Dave as his goofy sidekick. Maybe Regis' show shoulda been 'Regis with Letterman'. We'll never know how good that could have been. Good thing Dave came well into his own within a year or two.

I actually saw this like a month or 2 ago, I looked up the album “It’s Time For Regis” and listened to it. It absolutely SLAPS. It’s literally fucking fantastic. Also, I agree, they should’ve blessed the crowd with some Swanee instead.

Regis and David Letterman were best friends of the show. Now Regis is gone, and his legacy lives on.
8:19 - Regis did his album at one point called “It’s Time For Regis” in 1968 on the Mercury label. I have to find the album somewhere on TH-cam to look for. I have not listened to his album before. I also have a Christmas album as well. He was mostly a singer at the time.

The first time I saw Regis was on the Joey Bishop show. Regis was the Ed McMahon for Joey Bishop. 1967. It went on till 1969. But like all the other late nite shows it lost out to the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson. I liked it. I would switch channels between both shows.

    Regis loved Dave.
Over the years he'd call him the 'Big Man'. And Regis would go the extra mile for Dave whatever he wanted to do.
One time Don Rickles called in and told Regis he had to stand up and drop his pants and 'fire off a rocket'.
Dave is Regis doing it? Not yet Don. Well tell him to do it.
And Regis had the deer in the headlights look that we all love.

I MET REGIS WHEN HE CAME TO PHILADELPHIA TO DO AM/PHILADELPHIA AND MY MOM AND I WENT TO THE SHOW AND WHEN WE TOOK PICTURES WITH HIM HE KEPT TALKING TO US FOR LIKE 20 MINUTES AND ASKED US WHERE WE LIVED AND WE TOLD HIM RUNNEMEDE IN SJ AND HE KNEW WHERE IT WAS BECAUSE ONE OF HIS RELATIVES LIVED IN GLENDORA WHICH WAS THE TOWN NEXT TO US AND HE WAS RIGHT GLENDORA IS THE NEXT TOWN AND MY MOM SAID TO HIM ARE YOU KIDDING AND HE HUGGED MY MOM AND SAID DORIS WHY WOULD I JOKE ABOUT THAT HOW WOULD I KNOW THE TOWN NEXT TO YOURS AND SHE SAID SHIT YOUR RIGHT AND HE STARTED LAUGHING. I SAID TO HIM WELL NOW THAT WE ARE ALL FRIENDS WHY DON'T YOU INVITE US UP TO YOUR REGIS AND KATHY SHOW OF WHICH HE THEN PULLED OUT A CARD OF HIS "I SWEAR HE HAD A BUSINESS CARD" AND WROTE HIS PHONE NUMBER ON THE BACK AND SAID CALL ME IF YOUR EVER GOING TO BE IN N.Y. . MOM AND I BOTH THOUGHT HE WAS BULL SHITING BUT IN 3 MONTHS WE WERE GOING TO SEE THE RADIO CITY MUSIC HALL CHRISTMAS SHOW SO WE CALLED HIM AND I SWEAR HE ANSWERED AND TOOK CARE OF US FOR COMING TO SEE THERE SHOW. NOT ONLY DID WE GO BUT HE BROUGHT US BACK TO THE GREEN ROOM AND THEN CAME OVER DURING THE SHOW AND INTRODUCED US AND TOLD ME TO TELL THE STORY I JUST TOLD YOU ALL FOR THE FIRST TIME. WHAT A DAMN NICE GUY WHY DO WE ALL HAVE TO PASS AT SOME TIME ITS JUST NOT FAIR.

Next time before you type anything, first take a moment to locate a couple of important buttons: one would be Caps Lock - it's on the left side of the keyboard right next to the letter A; the other button is a comma - it's just above the spacebar and has a comma painted on it. Now, before you start typing, make sure the Caps Lock light is OFF; if not, hit the Caps Lock button once. To capitalize the first or any letter, such as a name (Regis, Glendora, etc.), hold Shift, but let it go after so the rest are lower case. Bless you in advance.
