    Porous welds at 9:50 and you "don't care"? Feel sorry for anybody who spends at least $4k on a pit and the builder has that sentiment. Plenty of other pit builders that would care.

    I've seen a few of these builds and I'm kinda curious, why don't you cut the door all the way to the bottom of the V? wouldn't it make cleaning easier and also allow the potential for more direct air between the coals and logs?

    As much as I would love to buy one of your smokers, they are a little out of my price range, but I’m aware that you guys are using quality steel and don’t have a lot of production volume yet, so it’s understandable. That said, the fact that you built your first offset smoker by just sorta jumping into welding has me inspired to learn how to do it, too. Appreciate you making this mini series to show us a little how it’s done! Hope I’ll run into you in my hometown someday. Maybe we can have a craft beer and talk BBQ and music!

    I like it but have 2 concerns.
    1) If the pinholes are open to the air gap, inside the firebox, it will allow moisture into an area you won’t be able to season and will allow the firebox to rot from the inside out. You can probably avoid this by building up a lot of seasoning on top of the pinholes to seal them up.
    2) The door design/position and the V-Bottom may make ash removal a bit difficult; I’d cut out the bottom of the front plate to match the V-bottom then just oversize the door plate to cover when closed. Then you’d be able to get straight in with a shovel or a brush once it’s cold.
    Loving the series and looking forward to the next episode!

    • @booose06
      @booose06 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have one of his Chudpit smokers. It is honestly really easy to clean out the ash with the V-bottom even though the door doesn't drop to the bottom of the fire box. I just use a square shovel and it aligns perfectly with the groove and scoops everything up.

      @ramaya007 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that is the drawback with some square fireboxes. This just makes clean up a little more difficult. Round fire pit IMO is better but for a home welder square is a bit easier to attach.

    Just a FYI...when you do small bump tacks like that, and get the dot (hole) in the middle, it's called a fisheye and can go all the way through the weld. This, combined with the quick heating and cooling action can make the weld prone to cracking. You're better off to turn the machine down a little bit and run a constant bead. The spot of posority is likely caused either by holding the nozzle too far from the metal or a little wind. Either way, it's usually caused by losing gas coverage. Great videos though.

  • @C-Mah
    @C-Mah ปีที่แล้ว

    Do you need to weld the inside of the fire box? Also, may make a tube A-frame (swing set style). You could hang a chain in the middle with a pully. You hang your box then push the table out of the way.
    Ha ha, just saw episode 3. Nvm you got it off the table.

  • @CamoDC4L
    @CamoDC4L ปีที่แล้ว

    If you are selling these you should honestly “care” that you gassed out on those welds. If I’m gonna pay a premium for something I expect premium quality. You should have grinded out those gas outs and re-welded. If you weld those corners vertically from top to bottom it will transfer the heat quicker and you will be less likely to blow through. Get to the point where you don’t want to grind your welds off and just clean them up. That will deliver a very high quality product. Fire video though!

  • @jcsmith3806
    @jcsmith3806 ปีที่แล้ว

    Quick tip, always push a mig don't drag it. You drag stick. The only time to drag mig is if your filling. Your welds will much flatter and cleaner.

    Love the process - 2 things to share. 1st -As a back saver - maybe get a Harbor Freight engine hoist - I've seen lots of guys use them for other tasks. 2nd - might be time to go with something other than croccs while welding - those heavier bent assemblies could take one Chud out of commission for a while with a broken foot or worse. Just a suggestion - again love seeing the process.

    Way cool setup you've built up over time, Mr. R.. One thing I discovered when you learn how to weld....your neighbors either love you or hate you. Myself? I keep the garage door down when welding or grinding.(tough to do here in central Texas, but it keeps the neighbors from calling false alarms to the Fire Dept., lol.)
    I'm Jonesing after your slow speed chop saw. I have the much cheaper abrasive high speed chop saw....sounds like ten freight trains when running. But like you said, a few angle grinders can do most any job...just takes a little longer.
    Enjoying this series. Probably will be as great as your Weber Kettle series.
    kudos to ya, Brad.

    I'd slow your wire down just a tad, and you should be pushing your weld pool with mig welding. Also, to help keep your area nearly spatter free, try spraying a thin film of WD40 on before you weld. You'll have nearly zero spatter.

    Could/would you sell JUST that firebox? And if so how much $$
    I have a propane tank that I’m going to turn into a side box smoker(when I get a round tuit)
    Making the firebox is most likely what has been my holdup and if I could get one made that would definitely get me off my butt and get to welding. I have 87 different ways to apply heat and smoke to things, but I do love to make new ones.
    I bet you’d get a kick out of my Party Barn, it ain’t no Matt’s Meat Church but we have a good time 😜

    First- let me say- I enjoy (and appreciate) your content. You started out saying that all you really need is an angle grinder and a cheap welder- that's the type of videos I had hoped for. You have what seems to be a pretty well stocked shop. Someone who's attempting a 'one off', home built smoker using the angle grinder and cheap welder - for the first time- is probably not going to get much out of this. This is not a knock- you run a business and it might not be a good use of your time to show how to bust out a serviceable smoker with "stone knives and bear skins"- but maybe you could do that one day??

    Your firebox outer skin is now a sealed vessel. You should drill a small hole to let the air expand and contract

    You made comment about the hole from the fire box to the cook chamber, making it lower than you normally make it. I made a standard flow with the fire exit low similar to yours. It wasn’t worth a shit! Used way to much fuel. Once I opened it up, worked great. I’m interested to see what happens with this pit. Thanks for sharing.

    I started smoking on a reverse flow back in college a few years back and have stuck with my crappy store bought pit since then. I would love to buy this off of you when completed. Met you at Windy City Smokeout last year, which confirmed I want a Chud Pit. You're the man

    You should try selling these, I bet you'd at least be able to get a couple out. Start small (maybe 2-3 offsets max).

    I must say I've been watching your show since it came on and I've already designed in my head a reverse flow smoker and I must say you stole my design I am going to file charges against you at the patent office for stealing my design of your designs smoker I would really love to build

    Im tig welding my frankensmoker
    and I made holes welding tubing. I had to bridge gaps by spot welding over and over until it was covered. Very hard, and very rewarding.
