I liked that Ivar's "Don't be afraid" to the soldier that stabbed him was a callback to Ragnar and Ecbert.

With regards to you reminiscing about your old Vikings reactions. I discovered you when you started watching Vikings, and I´ve watched most (if not all) of your Vikings reactions since. For me, a good reactor is someone who has the intellect to understand the plot, the empathy to feel the characters, and the charisma to to make it interesting to watch. Sadly, few reactors live up to that :) But I think you´re one of the reactors that "tick all the boxes". So keep it up with whichever show you react to in the future!

The Ivar scene had me speechless the 1st time I saw it. I liked Hvitserk's closure. Hvitserk was a lot like his Uncle Rollo, to me. Great fighter, but was otherwise lost in his day to day life. He was constantly searching for his own sense peace and meaning. I believe he finally found it, and Alfred honored him greatly by renaming him Athelstan.

When Ubbe said "Is that the end?" to Floki, I started crying so hard cus I knew that was the end of Vikings. Then the music made it worse lol. :'(

They could’ve pushed the story more if they wanted it .. historically ivar went to more lands and stayed in Ireland i guess till he died of age and Harald went to Sweden i guess Ubba died in england and Björn went on more expansions and died in Sweden in the end so .. idk
But they wanted to end the show sadly

Proud to say here since the start🙋🏻‍♀️ honestly I had to kinda grieve when it ended cos of how invested I am to it 😅 Loved it ended so well everything came full circle, everything’s been leading up to what happened the golden age of the vikings being over is what we felt. Especially with seeing Kattegat not being what it used to it shows the times have changed and it doesn’t feel like “home” anymore everyone we loved from there was gone. The i love you’s had me bawling and when ivar was crying 😭 and then seeing Carly cry😩 Floki feeling it gave me chilllsss. I love how it ended on “we’ll see what tomorrow brings” it leaves it to our imagination especially knowing how history plays out.

I liked what you said about the brothers twisting their fate together, that was beautiful. I disagree with Ivar being afraid to die. On this show, every scene is there for a reason, and it wasn’t coincidence that in the previous episode Ivar talked to Hvitserk about Ragnar being already forgotten, saying ”that frightens me” (for the first time ever talking of fear). In my opinion, Ivar saying ”I’m afraid” as he was dying referred to that conversation. His time to go had come, but would he be remembered? Had his achievements been enough? Consequently, Hvitserk’s reply is: ”No one will ever forget Ivar the Boneless.” Had Ivar been afraid of dying like a child as many viewers think, I believe Hvitserk’s appropriate reply would’ve been: ”It’s going to be all right.” Or: ”Don’t worry, you’re going to Valhalla.” But instead he assures his brother that he will be remembered, and that is what the scene is about. As for letting his walls drop, Ivar never had problems showing emotion or weakness on this show, he was a great enough person to admit it and be honest about it, for instance when he told Heahmund that he was jealous of him, because Heahmund was strong and whole, but Ivar wasn’t. He also broke down in front of Floki when Floki was about to leave.
The whole death scene was mirroring Ragnar’s death scene with Ecbert. Same music. Ragnar twisted his fate and chose the day of his death. So did Ivar. Ragnar said ”Don’t be afraid” to the person sending him to his death. So did Ivar. Ragnar gave a big speech before his death for his people, not himself. So did Ivar. Ecbert, his friend and enemy was watching. So was Ivar’s friend and enemy Alfred. Ragnar’s death was on Ecbert’s conscience, and Ivar’s is on Alfred’s. Ragnar sacrificed his life to pass the torch on to Ivar. Ivar sacrificed his life to pass the torch on to Hvitserk. Who, in this episode is based on historic Guthrum who fought in the battle of Edington, accepted baptism as part of a peace treaty with Alfred, was named Athelstan, then went to rule the vast Norse kingdom of the Danelaw in England, with both peoples, Saxons and Northmen living and farming in peace like Ragnar had wanted. So basically, in this series, Ivar and Hvitserk fulfilled Ragnar’s legacy in the end. Btw, I too loved their relationship and the brotherly love they both showed for each other in the end. The reason why that ”I love you” hit so hard, I believe is because this was the first time one of Ivar’s brother’s said these words to Ivar and genuinely meant it. I loved your reaction, thank you so much for sharing it!

Every son of ragnar has gone one way out of his life, Björn was the king he never wanted to be, Ivar was the greatest and most terrible viking that has ever gone down in history, Ubbe has found the golden land and Ragnar wanted exactly that too discover that, Hvitzerk was baptized like Ragnar, who was always at odds with his and the christian gods, Sigurd was at odds with his brother Ivar like Rangar himself with Rollo.
    Best series ever.

It wasn't just a completely random nobody that god Ivar. That soldier had witnessed Alfred's speeches and battles so far and had a few shots on screen in the run up to the ending. The Ivar vs Alfred battle was won by Alfred by a means of not playing Ivar at his own game. He inspired his men to have the bravery to fight Ivar for him.

    • @-breakofdawn-
      @-breakofdawn- 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hmm, no, it was won by Ivar deciding to sacrifice himself for his brother, knowing full well Alfred would treat Hvitserk well, out of respect for Ivar. It’s the end of the chess game that was started by Ragnar and Ecbert. Alfred may think he won the battle, but Hvitserk/Guthrum will end up living in England for the rest of his life, maintaining peace with Wessex and Alfred, ruling the vast Norse country called the Danelaw where the Vikings settled and farmed. Like Ragnar had dreamed. Hvitserk was Ragnar’s legacy that Ivar said to Björn was safe with him.

Do you remember the last episode of the first season of The Last Kingdom? The battle they fought was the same as the one ivar and hvitserk fought in (Battle of edington). At the end when the saxons won, the dane/viking leader got baptized and was renamed athelstan (I cant think of his viking name but i know he did actual get baptized irl and was renamed athelstan). I kind of think hvisterk in a way replaced that person for that scenario. Also i kind of think Ivar's whole "you can't kill me" was not in the literal sense of not being able to kill him but more so in the legend of who he was and his legacy (kind of like the sandlot quote "hero's get forgotten but legends never die)

I didn’t see it as much of a suicide as it was a sacrifice. Ivar saw the Saxon’s going after “Its the son of Ragnar” (Hvitserk) and stepped in to save his brother telling him his work was done. Just happened to work out for both of them in the end. Side note. Ivar was afraid his whole life of being different which made him act in such cruel ways. We just saw the true Ivar in the end.

    • @-breakofdawn-
      @-breakofdawn- 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I agree with the sacrifice but not with the being afraid. Ivar was never afraid in his whole life, but he quickly discovered as a kid that no one would respect him because if his intelligence or fighting skills. The only way to gain the respect of his peers and his brothers, and to keep the mockery and humiliation at bay was to instill fear in others, so that’s what he resorted to most of the time. The cruelty had many other reasons - first off the culture he grew up in - they all did cruel things at times, none of them were angels, Ragnar included. Second his anger, mostly stemming from the way others treated him, and to a degree also from the constant pain he was in. Third his upbringing - Floki had a very dark side to him, and Aslaug asked him to teach Ivar to hate the Christian God like Floki hated him, and Floki did a thorough job at it. ;) Yes, we did see true Ivar in the end - and by that I don’t mean the one who said he was scared to be forgotten, but the true loving and caring Ivar that wasn’t afraid to give his life for his brother’s without hesitation.

Enjoy Valhalla. My king, my heart, my love 💙IVAR THE BONELESS💙. Such a badass yet again this episode. Broke my heart into pieces when he died, I cried so hard I couldnt see, love that his 2nd father Floki, felt his death. I cried even harder when my baby finally dropped his facade and admitted he was scared, most likely scared that he still wouldn't be accepted into Valhalla since hes a cripple.
Ivar has always been a lonely sad little boy deep down, just desperate for love from his family and to be seen as an equal. Had crows and someone feeling Ivars death so makes me realise even more that Ragnar and Ivar were truly special to the gods more than the others. Odin only ever spoke to Ivar and rallied the sons of Ragnars death, plus even Harbourt saw Ivar as special, visited him and took some of his pains onto himself. Nobody will ever forget Ivar and hes the only viking I've heard of and learned about growing up lol. Alex has been outstanding in this show, this was his show after Travis left, he has been carrying the show since then and i always knew that they couldnt kill him and still have a show without him, so makes sense that they killed him last episode.
I knew all along that Ivar could never kill Hvitserk, so happy they finally admitted their love for one another, Hvitserk was always meant to be with Ivar and Ivar was meant to save him and show everyone how much of a legend he is. I think they never showed us Valhalla and everyone reuniting so we could imagine it ourselves and envision how we see it exactly. Floki felt his adopted son Ivars death and will join him & Ragnar in Valhalla soon by the sounds of it (Floki telling Ubbe hes gonna die soon)
The meaning to Ivar controlling his warriors to me was that Ivar lives in all of them, that"s what I took from that badass moment. I hated and felt cheated when some scared boy killed Ivar however after awhile I realised, Ivar chose to let him kill him, Ivar could have killed that boy 3 times in the time he had before he got stabbed. Also think its amazing how again Ivar was like his father Ragnar, Kinda choosing his death and owning his fate in england also the parallels of both Ivar and Ragnar saying "Dont be afraid" to the people who they gave permission to kill them or send them to their death. Ragnar said it to Ecbert in 4x14 and Ivar said it in this episode. Ivar is definitely in Valhalla, I heard the ravens as soon as he died, plus Floki felt it, Ivar is legendary just like his father. Wish we could have seen Ivar's son once or that Ivar could have once at least, glad that he gets to grow up with Igor around, who adored and loved his father.
I'm sure Katia did too but she held back and didnt let herself fall too hard since she realised Ivars in love with Freydis still not her.

    • @-breakofdawn-
      @-breakofdawn- 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I think Ivar wasn’t afraid he wouldn’t get into Valhalla, but of being forgotten, that’s why Hvitserk comforts him by assuring him that no one will ever forget him. As you said yourself, the Gods loved and favoured him, he sacrificed himself for his brother on the battlefield, if that doesn’t earn him a place in Valhalla, then I don’t know what does. I was glad he died in his brother’s arms, having craved love from his brothers all his life and receiving it in his final moments. The beautifully choreographied ”fighting” that represented his spirit living in each viking like you said, also reminded me of episode 10 season 5 where he threw away his crutch in his mind and imagined himself to be whole and strong - and I thought it could also portray him imagining as fighting through his warriors. Whatever Hirst intended, it was a wonderful idea in my opinion. I also liked the shot from above at the end of the death scene. Alfred and Hvitserk both positioned between the fallen cross symbolizing Christianity and Ivar representing pagan faith, with Alfred closer to Christian faith and Hvitserk closer to paganisn, but both of them literally in between. Foreshadowing what is to come. The imagery in this show has always been amazing, from start to finish. So sad it’s over now, I need to rewatch. ;) Thank you for liking and understanding Ivar’s character so well, most of the time your comments have been my sentiments exactly, and it was refreshing to see that! 🥰

    • @shannyd1
      @shannyd1 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@-breakofdawn- loving this comment and yes i know he was afraid of being forgotten, i realised it afterwards but was crying a mess, after seeing him die and drop his facade like that. Alexs acting gets me everytime, even if Ivar wasn't gorgeous and perfection to me, his actjng would still be incredible. Also i was told and assumed Ivar wasnt imagining himself walking at all during 5x10. Ivar actually did walk with just his braces and no crutch. He was having another beserker moment, filled with so much adrenaline and anger that he can walk for a short amount of time. Ivar had a berseker moment before that too, if u remember during 5x03 when Ivar was screaming at the saxons, he also got shot in the knee cap, and hardly flinched, he just looked annoyed, ripped it out and threw it. In normal circumstances Ivar would be yelling in pain from that and suffering for awhile, but he was in his berseker mode and didnt give a damn at the time. I guarantee though, that later on after he calmed down, he ended up feeling that agony from his injury plus Ivar also having the brittle bone disease that makes anything that happens to his legs unbearable.
I love all the things u noticed and pointed out to me aswell, i appreciate that, i also agree that the imagery in this show has been amazing, i really am missing it and gutted the spinsoff show is set over a 100 years later.
Thankyou for enjoying my comments and ur support, i can get carried away, defensive and emotional when it comes to anything im passionate about lol It feel really good that someone appreciates my comments and agrees with some or most of the things i say about my boy Ivar.

Bjorn bravery and the love from his people
Ubbe ragnars peace, and desire to explore
Sigurd, witty mouth and ideas aswell, because he suggested that they make the heathen army

13:47 i would rather go to folkvangr then valhalla myself lol :P but after all those seasons i dont think i recall them ever talking about folkvangr

    Wow, Carly,
you seemed kind of vulnerable and emotional during this episode - not as level-headed as usual. You were not lying about how special this show is for you - and it really was a depressing episode.
Interesting point about standing up against fate and also the worst brother-brother relationship of the show being mended in the end. I have to disagree though about Valhalla being established as a real thing. The show was always ambivalent about these spiritual things and actually made a point about people seeing what they wanted when they die or seeing nothing at all.
You are correct about Athelstan being a common name back then in Anglo-Saxon England. But Hvitserk got baptized as Athelstan, because he absorbed the story of Guthrum (Torvi's son in the show) whom he killed earlier and whom you know from The Last Kingdom season 1. This was the very same battle of Eddington (Ethandun) that saw Leofric killed in TLK. So Hirst made a connection here to the first great defeat of the Vikings. So Hvitserk presumably was allowed to rule over the Danelaw.
For me, the end was a bit anti-climactic but I was satisfied as well. With the show essentially being canceled, Hirst did the best he could. Rewatching the show with friends and family is exactly what I am doing so I don't have to let go just yet :D

Ragnar existed. It's just some stories are as some say "fictional".
    But Lothbrok existed indeed ✌
    And yes....
Sequel of Vikings is coming out..
Vikings:Valhalla :D 100 years after all this events.

I feel it was a worthy end for the show. Some of the last seasons have not been my favorites, but I stuck through, since I felt I owed that much to the show. Still sad to see Ubbes storyline end so abruptly since the native american storyline had just started. I was actually excited to see more of it, but I guess it's left to the imagination now.
They should have offered Travis some free catering food to make a small appearance on the last episode. In one of his interviews about the show he was asked what was his favorite part about being on set, he answered free food. When you think about it, Ragnar was quite often eating in his scenes.
Hopefully you'll have the time to continue reacting to a new show. Will be waiting for more.

Yea Ivar basically had to overdo the whole Vikings machismo act because he was a cripple. He was laughing at fear in the face, there's nothing he would not do trying to prove himself. But at the end, the facade was gone. He was just a boy afraid to die.
I think Ragnar Lothbrok did exist because he was the father of Ivar, Hviserk, Ubbe, Bjorn, Sigurd and another son who also accomplished many things but was not on the show named Halfdan.
