    I copy and pasted my instagram post i made ab how to grow live sphagnum moss since i got a few questions on it!
    Regrowing live sphagnum moss from dried sphagnum is pretty easy. You just need, dried moss, water, light, and most important, time lol. I’ve only used one brand of sphagnum moss, Besgrow New Zealand Spagmoss, so I’m not sure if this works with other brands.
    By the way this is just what i’ve done and works for me, there might be better methods out there!
    First place the moss in a container. I prefer clear, or semi clear containers because that allows the sphagnum moss to also grow on the sides because it’s able to get light. Then moisten the moss, but not to the point where there is water pooled at the bottom. At this point, you could put some type of covering over the moss like saran wrap, or put it in a humid environment, but i’ve found this isn’t completely necessary. I’ve mainly regrown sphagnum in about 50% humidity.
    Place the moss somewhere it can get an ample amount of light. I’ve only grown mine under grow lights, so I don’t have recommendations for where to place it if you’re using natural light. If you don’t give it enough light, there’s a decent chance mold might form and it will take longer for the moss to sprout.
    Keep the moss consistently moist. This is key. If you let your sphagnum dry completely, it will extend the time it takes for your moss to regrow.
    After around the 1.5 month mark you should start seeing small pieces of moss regrowing. You’ll be able to tell the difference between moss and algae because the moss will appear as a light green actual piece of growth, while algae appears as a dark green coating. Try to remove excessive amounts of algae, i’ve found that moss doesn’t regrow on heavily algae coated sphagnum.

    hello! thank you to everyone who watches my videos, my channel is growing really fast, and I appreciate you all so much. This is a quick video because I'm nearing the end of my final quarter of college so I'm doing my best to prioritize school at the moment (it's hard tho bc i really just want to make content lol). I might not make a video next week, but if I do, it will probably be on the shorter end like this one.

    several questions:
    - will you ever release a wet terrarium tutorial?
    - do you need to use activated charcoal in a terrarium? (can i use crushed up charcoal briquettes instead, etc)
    - can I add snails/wood lice in a terrarium and if I can how? will they overpopulate or no?

    • @benjiplant
      @benjiplant  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      1) eventually, but probably not for another 2-4 weeks or after I move.
      2) not necessarily, I've just heard it provides benefits such as reducing odors, mold, and fungus. It's just what works for me, so I recommend it to other people too. Apparently it also helps moss grow better? it's definitely not necessary. I've used just sphagnum moss or used lava rock instead of charcoal. However, my best looking and fastest growing terrariums all have charcoal. And i'm not sure how horticultural charcoal and say grilling charcoal differs, but i know they're advertised differently.
      3) and i have no idea actually, i haven't kept live animals in my terrariums before besides springtails.

    • @teawitch785
      @teawitch785 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      also, which plants can you use to reduce trimming? can you make a closed terrarium that requires no trimming? and can you add mushrooms in a closed terrarium?
