The trouble with bricks that are over 100 years old is that they have no durable qualities so even if you point up to a high standard they will absorb rain water and this in turn will turn to moisture and run down the inside of the stack. The cost of the scaffolding is one of the major expenses on a repair like this so my thoughts would be to drop the stack add a dpc in lead and renew all flashings as they will be at least 50 years old assuming they have be replaced at all.

Ronnie Biggs That is ideally what is needed, but the family has a low budget and chose repairs. However the chimney will live and outlast the owners. A flue liner is being incorporated for a log burner.

Fair play Chris . Perhaps a spray of a “quality “brick seal water repellent would help this issue after pointing with reasonable cost.

@@foundationgood123Buildings that are 100 years old were built to last providing they are well maintained. My house is over 100 years old and will still be standing long after I've croaked. The newer modern houses built these days won't last as long as older houses.

A wise man always told me never point a chimney, they rot from the inside out so pointing is useless. Takedown and rebuild..

I would take it down to the most solid course and then rebuild and make sure theres was a drip edge groove around. Looks like about £80 in materials and about £900 labour to me. What did you charge?

@@foundationgood123I noticed you went up into the customers loft to investigate the chimney breast. I've never once had a builder or roofer offer to do that. When I've asked them if they will need to see inside the loft space they say it's not necessary. Sign of laziness and a dodgy builder if they can't be arsed to look. Your video impressed me.
