  • Rahul Kadakia, Christie’s International Head of Jewellery, introduces some of the many storied pieces from an incredible collection of royal jewels and jewelled objects that’s set to make auction history.
    ‘This is living history in your hand,’ says Rahul Kadakia, International Head of Jewellery at Christie’s, of a stunning trove of jewels that date back nearly 500 years to the early part of the Mughal dynasty, which ruled in India from 1526 to 1857.
    India’s rich culture of jewellery is partly the result of natural circumstance. The mines of Golconda yielded the highest grade of diamonds; Kashmir produced the rarest and most beautiful sapphires; while the greatest emeralds arrived in India from Colombia through commercial exchange via the Portuguese-controlled ports of Goa.
    Jewellery in the Mughal tradition was an integral aspect of articulating authority, with eyewitness accounts from the height of the Mughal Empire revealing the extent to which rulers valued gems for their rarity, physical properties and provenance.

      You do realise that this is a collection of jewels owned by people from around the world that are being displayed in an exhibition in England? No? Because you are ignorant and the first thing you do is jump on the Colonial bandwagon. MOST of the ‘private collectors’ of these jewels are in the Middle East, in Russia, some in America and a lot in India.
      In the meantime as far as Colonial ‘Plunder’ is concerned, you have the lot back and in return we will have the hundreds of millions to the point of trillions of pounds of aid back that we have poured into India for bloody decades in an attempt to lift YOUR POOR out of Squalor. You are the biggest democracy in the world yet are utterly helpless when it comes to kids living in the streets, helplessly corrupt politicians and filthy rich ‘businessmen’ who do not give a shit about their own people.
      As for us Poor British I’d suggest you check out our history and what we have actually given to the world. We don’t need your fucking pity. What the hell have you contributed to the modern world or the progress of human beings in it? Absolutely nothing but you have perfected whining about something that was over nearly A CENTURY ago and getting out the bloody begging bowl as soon as somebody mentions it. You can thank Indira Ghandi for that.
      We left India politely when asked to,without bloodshed so you could ‘run your own country’ and what have you done with it? It’s still a steaming great shithole where little girls can’t walk around the streets safely for fear of being gang raped and murdered by psychopathic male bullies who despise women. And you STILL expect us to support your poor. We have only recently stopped giving Aid to India when it dawned on our politicians that you arseholes have a space programme yet you can’t look after your own destitute women and children.
      Poor backward bloody Indians who can’t lift themselves out of poverty because of a medieval mindset that is terrified of equality, progress and change. You can’t even get rid of your caste system. It was outlawed legally and in the Indian constitution in 1948 yet everybody still practices it. Despite it all you are proud of geological rocks and metals that come out of the little patch of land you happen to live on where they occurred naturally. You didn’t have to invent anything, you didn’t have to create anything yet you talk,about the ‘honour’ of naturally occurring metals and minerals as if you, personally created them. You need to bloody well grow up, stop blaming other people for your poverty and look to your own corrupt politicians and businessmen and ask them where all the money is.

    If we fully consider what we have in our temples, we are still the richest as per latest statistics.
    Nevertheless, there should have been some actions from the concerned departments to bring back such lost treasures- at least the iconic ones!!! Many of the countries are practicing that.

    • @willx9352

      You are joking aren’t you? It simply means the ruling elite was expert of extracting immense wealth from the common people - in that “Indian” rulers were no different from rulers everywhere. Of course “India” did not exist before British rule. The subcontinent was a mish mash of warring states, some with Muslim rulers, others with Hindu rulers and with different languages and cultures. Indeed the British were able to exploit these divisions by alliances with local rulers to gain overall control.

      Martin and that is where they all are in Asia not united kingdom our Royal Family do not steal Diamonds and Rubies from India but the majority of Indians are taught this in school and they grow up thinking this sad as it is if that was the only thing to worry about

  • @druviseglite
    @druviseglite 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    It is fascinating as all of them were not stolen by the British since these pieces belonged to Sheikh Hamad bin Abdullah Al-Thani. British did take and steal, but what modern Indians seem to ignore is that five Princely state heads where the huge part owners of them and they were not fond of freedom movement since it would turn their lives upside down from British Raj like cutting of privy purse. They also were not ready to join India in 1947, but in end did join. Even in the last days of the Mughal Empire, the Muslim ruler jewels did pass to Iran, and Western Asia troughs political marriages, wars, and diplomatic gifts. What remained got passed into the hands of the five princely states with vast collections as they bought them up. The jewels pretty much in the British Raj period were stolen, gifted, or even used as bribes, exchange items. I had read a book about the five princely states where a pretty much a diamond necklace was exchanged for two Rolls-Royce cars with one Bentley when cars started arriving in India. 1970 was the end of the privy purse, privileges, and titles and the hardest time. Owning vast lands and palaces with residences five princely states pretty much became liability with new taxes like it was also for the nobility of the UK. Selling of palaces, villas, land, items including their jewelry, passing them to museums, and also abandoning their estates, turning them into hotels and museums to gain income just like in England. So it seems that weird that only the British get the blame when a Qutar national from royal House of Al Thani sells his own private collection. Nader Shah as Shah of Persia also sacked Delhi, and Agra.

      Oh, the same thing happened with rich merchants both in Kolkata and New Deli all over India before and after WWII thanks to the economic downturn and taxes as they sold and abandoned their properties just to stay afloat.
