  • Ethan takes you through a few of the Northstar B17s in IXP lay-up that were used on the 2019 Northstar Experience on the San Juan River. At the end of the video we show the B17 cruising through government rapids.

Would the ww eyelets work with the carbon fiber gunnels? My Northwind Solo has em and I’m thinking of adding lacing.. Not going to do ww, just big lakes :)

You’ll have to adhere d-rings/daisy chains/web loops under yours. The alum has rivets, your gunnels are fused/adhered on. (Less hardware)

@@HappyPaddlin Yeah.. drilling through the entire gunnel would be nasty. I guess I’ll just do the old fashioned drillholes below the gunnels. Looks a bit neater than the daisy chains

@@k______________________ That works too! Haven't sourced good hole protector "rings" so your lines aren't just resting against sharp composites. Let me know what you use!

@@HappyPaddlin You could use rubber/PVC cable grommets but that'd mean you'd have to drill a 6mm hole to fit in a 3mm cord, and the bigger the hole, the messier it gets with carbon fiber.
I drilled 3mm holes under the gunwales and used 3mm polyester cord with a zero stretch dyneema core, and put nylon tubing over it to create loops. Nylon's not super UV resistant BUT it's much more slippery than PVC, which is good. A dyneema cord that doesn't stretch really doesn't move much at all so there's very little mechanical wear and tear :). I used 20mm nylon webbing for the actual lacing, added some buckles, and the end result is nice and tidy.
I asked Northstar and they said they mostly use grommets for the visual appeal and there's very low risk of delamination as the holes are above water.
I can send you a few pics if you're interested for sure :).

Thanks for the info! Hadn’t done it like that before. Would love to to see some pics at ejebersold@gmail.com
Others may want to go that route too and then I can show them the pics.
