    For anyone wondering, "to bite your thumb" isn't literally biting your thumb. It means to touch the tip of your thumb to the back of your front teeth and then flicking your thumb outward at someone. No actual biting involved - it was very akin to how we throw the bird these days.

    • @coffeegirl18
      @coffeegirl18 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Seconded. It's also the equivalent of flipping the bird at someone. It's referenced in Romeo and Juliet (I'm pretty sure). I learnt how to swear the Elizabethan way. I grew up near Stratford (Ontario not in England) and they're big on plays.

    • @jewelfyrenation

    • @blakewhite3131

      I have no idea why they interpreted that people would try to BITE their thumb or like,,,, get it all up in there, as idk a power move??? But yeah, i always thought it was mimicking biting thumb, LIGHTLY, and just flicking the tip of your thumb against the bottom of your upper teeth, outwards towards the person.
      My lower teeth are like halfway down the nail of my thumb, Bob immediately said to go further than the nailbed onto skin, and I just was so puzzled.

    This happened to my brother after a night of heavy drinking. It was an allergic reaction to the alcohol. His uvula swelled up to the point he was chewing on it. He was admitted to the hospital the next day and had to sleep overnight in a sitting position with his upper body over the bed table like he was asleep at a school desk. And he did have it surgically removed the following day as it was deemed life threatening.

    1:56 "I'm sorry you have the incovenience of having to hear about it; I lived it!" Mark might take away Wade's points, but that doesn't change the fact Wade still has a point. It seems there are many possible causes for a swollen uvula (uvulitis), but the most common one is infection with streptococcus bacteria. In Wade's case, if steroids worked then it could have been an allergy of some kind, but snoring or obstructive sleep apnea is also associated with it.

  • @seifoof
    @seifoof ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I had this happen when I drank too much one night and didn't drink any water. The combination of dehydration and snoring made it swell up and it was DEEPLY uncomfortable but it went away after 24 hours.
    Basically what causes it is if you sleep on your back and snore, that thing is getting knocked around a lot and pair it with dehydration it gets irritated enough to swell up to like, 5 times it's size and it's genuinely one of the most uncomfortable things I've ever experienced

  • @SpookyDollLady
    @SpookyDollLady ปีที่แล้ว +5

    As someone who also occasionally has their uvula swell up unexpectedly, I feel truly validated knowing I'm not the only freak of nature out there just choking on their own uvula for no apparent reason. In my case it's likely caused by GERD and chronic inflammatory issues, and it's usually not THAT bad, just slightly uncomfortable for however many hours it takes the swelling to go down.

    My dad had his uvula surgically removed for medical reasons. He has severe sleep apnea as well and his uvula would consistently impede his ability to breathe/sleep as a back sleeper. And yes he does very often have problems eating and drinking and choking a lot because the uvula is no longer there to block his airways properly, so i am rather knowledgeable in this topic of conversation already

    5:25 "Well you can't just remove a uvula too ... Apparently it helps with stuff."
    Oh, you absolutely can. I also had pretty severe sleep apnea and when I tried the CPAP stuff that did *not* work out for me. I used it for a bit over a month and had worse sleep quality than not using it! My Dr. then told me about surgery called a Uvulopalatalpharyngeoplasty where they do, in fact, remove your tonsils (if you still have them) and laser off part of your soft palate and yes, your uvula as well.
    That worked and I highly recommend it over that CPAP crap.

    I have had this happen, (3 times a year, yea that sounds about right, often triggered due to lack of sleep, or maybe a lot spicy/salty foods, not sure what triggers it) . I have it swell up and it reminds me more of a bloated worm, there is a discomfort when eating or even just swallowing. you don't want to eat until it goes away. usually goes away in 6, mabey 12 hours. but I tell you the worst experience, having a sliver of spice (or burnt aluminum...it was black and would not flex like a 3mm hair, this was from eating pasta) being stuck in the back of the throat, that soft spot behind the Uvula, and trying to use tweezers by myself and a mirror to remove it, with the gag reflex going into overdrive, thew up the pasta twice, but was able to get that sliver out. its like wanting to swallow, choking, but it worst when you swallow, and even worst when trying to use tweezers as you want to gag. never understood the gag reflect until that point... never looking at frozen lausanua the same again... the terror was real, as strange as that sounds

    Not sure if I am filled with hatred or envy that I am now discovering that some people do not have to suffer from occasional swollen uvulas.

    I recently suffered from uvulitis caused by strep and there is no worse feeling than feeling like something is close to choking you.

    Had the uvula swell a couple times, doc not certain reason, but think it's either allergies or "silent" acid reflux causing irritation and swelling without the characteristic burn of heart burn

    6:39 well Wade I was both eating and drinking. (Soda and Ice cream) when I saw that image.
    I feel like I've had that happen to me and I think it's either caused by eating a certain type of food or maybe it's something to do with your bed as I know Its common to wake up and find swelling.

    Wade this has happened to me a couple times. Both times I got a cold right afterwards. Also, how did you not mention swallowing! Swallowing anything, including water, PULLS THE UVULA. It's painful af.

    Wade show your doctor that picture and tell him/her that it chokes you even when you sleep and you want it removed, if it swelling so much that it literally chokes you all the time they will most likely remove it as it is a danger to your life. If it happens again go to your doctor and tell them you want it removed, take it easy buddy.
