Shitposter-kun try doing it with both cave story and cave story + running at the same time, those controlled with a one-handed snes controller connected via USB, and controlling last cave(hidden) on the GameCube port with the bongo controllers. (Of corse all of these are 0 hp lvl 3 nemesis only has to be spedrun under 2 minutes) then you can get good
You havent truely played cave story till you have 100% speedrun while getting brain surgery a in the back ally while haveing all the buttons mapped to the motion controls from a wii controlled and the so I doesnt work quite right so the is a 3 second delay

Me too, I did it in high school and I remember rambling about it with my gf at the time lol. I kept at it straight for a week until I finally beat it and felt like I was on top of the world. Glad to see someone else shares a similar experience. 👍
Yes! 3 Years later and someone finally beats my run! Now I have a reason to play Cave Story again~~~ We have almost the same time all the way up till the last form of ballos, then you manage to shave 4 seconds because you shoot Ballos with Curly and I don't :o Dunno why I didn't think of that. Very very beastly!
annotations: 0:19 i made a small mistake here. i boosted a tiny bit too far, could have shaved a few MS 0:25 most difficult part doing the 3hp speedruns was this area. ive died so many times here 0:43 i had to be really careful not to die here while still keeping up with my movement. the angles and the falling blocks were very troublesome. 0:58 i was preserving my button mashing here for the later parts, so i was a bit slow here 1:20 looks like i could have boosted at that part 1:34 boosted carefully here. the archers arrows could possibly hit me while i was boosting down 1:49 this part was also a pain. ive died so many times here. i decided to wait it out and shoot a few angles before moving on 2:13 i didnt want my blade to lv2 yet, so i was trying to avoid the xp 2:23 its possible to boost down there without taking damage from the boss, but youd have to have inhuman reflexes to do so 2:52 had to wait for this dialog to finish. would be great if you could skip it 3:09 first phase was pretty easy, but i still had to be carefu; not to get myself hurt. 3:20 just to clarify, you dont take any damage during the phase change. this is why i dont die from the spikes 3:33 i failed to get on top the first time correctly and depleted too little of his health, so i decided to try my luck and hope the bats wouldnt hit me 3:40 i dont actually test it, but its probably possible to shave a few more seconds here by letting him land closer to the left. but then youd need to make sure you could kill the eyes fast enough. 4:03 and thus the final phase 4:18 i used both curly and the kings sword to deal damage as fast as i could. a bit risky because you could accidentally boost towards ballos and get hit by the eyes 4:22 and done! thanks for watching!
Holy shit! I took 12 minutes, and it was quite complicated even having 55 life and spur, and you did it in such a short time with the basic weapon of the game and 3 life, that is having dedication and effort! my biggest applause
And I wonder if anyone has noticed how the pace of an efficient speedrun causes the dramatic tension in both loops of the soundtrack to align with recovering Curly, Curly waking up, the hectic gauntlet near the end, and the entry into the boss chamber?
As someone who takes over 15 minutes on a normal run, without any sort of disadvantages, and yet Ballos keeps killing me, this is painful to watch. At the same time I've learned some valuable info, so thanks!
Honestly, the only section of this that elicits any strong words from me is the RNJesus Falling block room the game hits you with after picking up Curly. 5hp from the Butes And a good ol’ 10 from each block that you’re trying so hard to dodge while practically running with bees in your face.
Holy... crap. You sir are my hero, the blade is easily one of my favorite weapons in the game. The way it works and how you get intertwine so much that I just would feel like an absolute jerk trading it for the nemesis. In fact my experiences with this game I've actually killed ALL bosses (well after you get the blade anyway) with the level 3, yes even the UNDEAD CORE. I haven't even fought this boss yet at all and I got the feeling my best friend would be anything BUT the sword, I'd still keep it mind you but still. You've given me hope now I may TRY to get the killing shot on ballos with the lvl 3, if you can do THIS with just the polar star and blade, I may be able to beat him with the spur and Kings blade. Chances are I'll die many miserable death though.

i wonder why people don't use dsiware cave story for speedruns, it seems like it'd be easier to shave off a few seconds since the exploding gates don't do damage in that port, although you have half the time to react to the falling blocks so maybe that's why
It doesn't really save time not taking damage, it just requires slightly better health management, which isn't really worth using the DS for long periods of speedrunning. Probably.
Tea-Stomach-Cycle The bigger part is that Hell Time Attack gives you a wider range of options. There’s a Life Pot so you can be sloppy while still having enough for Ballos. If you don’t like the Polar Star, there’s the Machine Gun and Snake. The Super Missile launcher is also available.
@CaveStoryChaddical Thanks! I got the idea of shooting Ballos' last form with Curly through several trial-and-errors. This should be possible with Heavy Press as well (Shoot with Polar Star while Blade is out), but I tired my hand out too much so I couldn't test it thoroughly. I also made a few mistakes here and there, but still managed to make a good time. I'm enthusiastic at what your new time will be.
I beat this level in 15 minutes with 55 health + that health restore potion... I don't know how many retries I did, but it took me around 6 hours. Also now I realize trading King's blade for the Nemesis was not a good idea.
Don't know if you check comments anymore, but any tips at all on the second room with the falling blocks? Am I correct thinking that it just takes a bit of good luck? I'm finally at hell on my 3HP run, but I haven't gotten a chance to try more than the second room lol.
+Gorlokk It's pretty much luck. The second room felt the most difficult for me to do. If you're doing a speedrun, be prepared to die a lot. If you're playing just to finish your 3hp run, you can focus more on dodging the falling blocks and getting rid of the angels.

@JuukaRock I'm terrible with the spur so I can't comment on that. Nemesis is a godsend. It makes the second area easier since it can hit 3 angels with one shot. You'll be having a bit of trouble with Ballos, but not much in a way that would affect you. Make sure to have both eyes visible when fighting ballos' 2nd form, as the nemesis can hit both (can't do that with curly's nemesis). Sorry for the late reply, have been busy with rl.

Very nice! I've also managed to do this kind of run, though I never did it for speed. Some interesting things you do here to shave off time, I'll have to try it. Just wanted to point out one thing. I've tested various weapons against all the bosses, and if you mash buttons it's actually faster to kill the press boss with the Polar Star than with level 1 blade. This is because Curly shoots more often if you do, and the Polar Star's shooting speed is much faster than blade's. Give it a shot, you'll see ;)
I was wondering why he didn't charge a spur blast when entering boss fights to at least start out with a powerful hit, and then realized that he has the polar star for some reason. I wonder why he didn't use the spur or missiles, since I'm sure that would make it faster?

I'm hardcore stuck on this part. I'm 3HP also, but I took Nemesis instead of Blade. Can't get past the second room. From the looks of it though, you timed the Blade's level-ups to be the most optimal for each situation. That is mighty impressive. Any tips you can offer for a guy with Nemesis instead? Should I stick with the Spur?
3:14 he went through some spikes. I think he was using some sort of cheat because he wasnt taking damage there and he should've died in one hit if he had 3 hp

13 years later I've come back to this video because I remembered out of the blue how damn sexy 1:55-2:03 was.
I've actually had more trouble fighting the Core then Ballos
And the path to Ballos was harder to do since I had to be fast but careful
The core In hard mode changes a man. It took me at least 35 tries.

I use kings blade against bosses bc it has a ridiculous damage output and it's super easy to spam

Is there a trick to making room 2 of hell look that easy? L2 sword and going slow usually does the mobs just fine for me, but those bricks are jerks.
how do you get through the second room with the falling blocks Dx i die so often.

I'm hardcore stuck on this part. I'm 3HP also, but I took Nemesis instead of Blade. Can't get past the second room.
From the looks of it though, you timed the Blade's level-ups to be the most optimal for each situation. That is mighty impressive.
Any tips you can offer for a guy with Nemesis instead? Should I stick with the Spur?

3:14 he went through some spikes. I think he was using some sort of cheat because he wasnt taking damage there and he should've died in one hit if he had 3 hp
