  • This goes over the basic setup of a new Synology 1019+ I have. I am going over the initial setup, folder sharing to our LAN, and setting our Static IP.

    I use synology in my home and work , had fan failure, called synology asked where to purchase one, they just sent it out , love how simple it is to use

    I have an older one of these, but love it. I actually a few days ago just setup port forwarding so I can remote into my server, its perfect. Also still just as fast outside as it is inside my house.

    I absolutely love how Synology offers their own self-hosted version of cloud services. I switched to Synology Drive when Dropbox set a device limit, and I switched to DS Note when Evernote set a device limit. They have Linux versions of the desktop software, as well as mobile. You can also replicate the whole Google Office suite. I used to have a monster 12 x 3TB FreeNAS build, downsized to a used Syno 416 Play, and now I don't need a NAS at all but I run the Syno off a single SSD just for the services. They are a little pricey but totally worth it.

    Personally I'd rather use a FreeNAS box. Synology has propritary hardware and I've heard they had issues a year or so ago. Guess we'll find out in a year or so. ;)

      I have lost to many files to Synology’s hardware to ever use it again (still had cold backups but those were a few weeks out of dates)
      For simple home / office use I would use nextcloud and a Zfs mount. (Freenas is ok but any will do) also setup a remote backup (s3 Like Or alike, minion is a good alternative to amazon’s aws. )
      Remember: a backup is only a backup if you have:
      - an original copy.
      - an duplicated copy.
      - a copy at another location (remote)
      - TESTED the thing is actually working. (If you do not know if the ‘backup’ is valid and sound all you have is a random set of bits)

    Synology uses a proprietary OS, that's why I preferred to use something else (open source), even I never heard of privacy/spying issues, but still, I never trust proprietary software.

    • @sysosmaster
      @sysosmaster 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, never trust hardware raid. If it fails you need to find an exact copy of the card. (Same version and revision and type. )

  • @LeslieLello
    @LeslieLello 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    it is not a fast set up for mac users that do not know netowrking. I am on the brink of returning and sticking to my wired RAID for that reason. Very disappointing. But your video is pretty good. Much better than Synology tutorials.

    That's a sweet setup and looks like the configuration is straightforward. I guess I'll have to replace my 'janky' old freenas and very old (10 years) hardware (Intel mini ITX).

    Great devices! Just have in mind to invest in external USB disk and cloud for (encrypted) backups. Sometimes units just die for no reason.

    What I missed. Why did you move from FreeNAS to Synology, except that you use new hardware instead of existing left-overs? Moving from ZFS to BTRFS does not bring advantages and I would consider it a brave move :)

      Bert Nijhof BTRFS And ZFS are inter exchangeable in my opinion. Just pick one or the other (do NOT mix them). I prefer zfs myself but that’s because I have used it more than BTRFS

    I never install the app (yet another bloat) to find a DHCP enabled device on a private network. Access your (internet) router and find the device in the DHCP lease allocation table. Optional mark that device as an static entry i.e. always assign that device the same IPv4/IPv6 address. Saves one from setting up a local DNS/smb master/whatnot. Only drawback is the dependency on the ISP router and trust. Looking forward for the next setuo i.e. iSCSI.

    I have the DS918+ I have the ds video instead of plex it's not as good but you can access it remotely for free so my mum can access it as well, I also have the ds audio and I just stream all my music to my phone and I use moments to automatically upload any photos I take, and use Drive so I can easly download or upload any files on my phone. Then on my workstation I just have all the shares mapped. Obviously I changed all the default ports

    QUESTION: I know this is bassackward compared to what you did today.
    How can I access movies & music stored on a Win7 box on my network? Evidently my google-fu was weak when it came to locating a solution to this problem.
    Admittedly, I'm a total Linux noob. I have 2 old Core2Duo laptops that I've installed Mint on (since Win7 didn't run smoothly given RAM limitations).
    Thanks in advance!

    I think this is a downgrade especially if data safety is important to you.
