"Raise the Sun" originally appeared as the first song on the hard-rocking Canucks' debut album, 'Heart of Oak', which was long-listed for a JUNO and the 2013 Polaris Music Prize.
Anciients released this re-recorded version in January 2024, during the buildup to their heavily anticipated third album. It features bassist Rory O'Brien and rhythm guitarist Brock MacInnes, who joined the band after they won a JUNO in 2018 for Metal/Hard Music Album of the Year.
    Lineup
    Kenny Cook (vocals, guitar)
    Mike Hannay (drums)
    Brock MacInnes (rhythm guitar)
    Rory O'Brien (bass)
Produced and mixed by Jesse Gander at RainCity Recorders in Vancouver, BC.
Mastered by Stu Mckillop at RainCity Mastering in Vancouver, BC.

Sounds great! I like aspects of both this and the original because you guys absolutely crushed it both times! I gotta buy both albums if you put em out! Its cool getting to hear two separate performances like I'm chasing a tour! Something I've always wanted to do! Cant wait to hear more from you guys!

Arguably, I like the original better... The kick sounds compressed to the point of no return. A the rawness is missing a bit. Ya it does sound hi-fi and "well produced... aka overproduced". But the original has this pure metal rawness.

You're right, but at the same time I hear the bass more in this mix.

Interesting. I'll be honest and say I can't tell the difference. However, I need to put my cd on and then listen to this straight after. Also, I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to production type stuff. When I get recording my own music properly soon, this kind of talk will probably help me along the way.

@@dolorosaenigmakil the OP was saying that the re-master took the original and changed the sound of the drums to give it less of an "in your face" aspect compared to the original. They also said that the re-master put the original song into some software and someone did a lot of tweaking of it. So the re-master people want to make it more "appealing" to the public in their opinion, but the song lost its energy, edge, baddass quality in the process.

Hmm. Not sure about this version. Mainly due to the vocals. Not that I dislike them, but Voice of the Void definitely took on a much darker feel than what was on Heart of Oak (the former is actually my favorite of the two, but I love both albums). The distortion on the guitars fits more with Voice of the Void also. Think I'll stick with the original.

I hate to be that guy but I think the original sounds better.
