That was great. A lot of the technical stuff was really doable, but the endurance they have is remarkable... I couldn't last that long if my life depended on it..
Excellent piece, I wish I could find other trumpet players to play this =/ I can understand why there are negative comments, dissonance on a bad sound recording doesn't exactly sound wonderful. I'm sure if I was there I would be absolutely blown away by the virtuosity demonstrated.
Omg, wow... you guys are awesome. I used to play trumpet, geez that instrument was the bomb. It gave me a funny lip afterwards, though xD. I'm going more towards violin and guitar, seeing as though I rented the trumpet and to give it up. It's easy to see why you guys are Juilliard! Keep it up!
I think both of them only take a few. I didn't audition there, but I would imagine the numbers are pretty much the same for most conservatories. I think I'm gonna audition there for grad school though!
They arent just pulling random notes. To even think that is being idiotic. If you listen a few times it starts to make more sense. This type of music is not my favorite, but I do appreciate how hard it is and how well these guys pull it off!
kids in high school dont have tones like these guys..its not the music thats impressive..its the sound and musicianship that is coming out of these horns
That's really awesome! Which is a better trumpet program, the one at Northwestern, or the one at Julliar? I wouldn't mind going to either of the two for an undergratuate. What is the acceptance of trumpeters of Northwestern and Julliard? Once again, outstanding performance!
This is an incredible performance and the piece is so much more tasteful to listen to compared to many of the groups. Most repertoire I've hear at NTC in the past few years is incredibly too technical and 'showy' if you understand. the insanely fast tonguing, marching on stage, multi-colored shirts, is all just too much to bear. I even remember watching a group that patted the palms of their hands onto their mouthpieces to create that 'whopping' sound out of their bells....gimme a break..
I know atonal music isn't random but it all has a tendency to sound the same to me. You really do have to listen to a lot of atonal music and listen carefully. It's not senseless it's just not something we're used to.
Also, is this really atonal? It sounds that way at the beginning but as you get into the piece it sounds like the tonality is ambiguous. It doesn't sound like there's nothing there.
Well I would have to say that the trumpet studio at Northwestern has more depth than the one at Julliard. Northwestern in general has the best brass studios in the nation! I am a graduate student there, and trust me, I have never worked with such talented musicians.
@tptmaster012 I agree completely, i just believe that overal the grad school is the best in the nation for classical style. Jazz has the Manhatten school of music, the Cincinnati conservatory is a great grad school. Each major school has it's strong points, just Julliard is most likely the overall top.
alexander, did you have to circular breathe for this? i have no idea how to get that started, do you have any specific pointers? :x AND how long did they give you guys to learn this?
Wow they all have beautiful sounds, and technique to spare too! That sounds like a pretty hard piece and they make it seem pretty easy. However, its just not exciting to me- it seems to lack the flare that the music deserves.
that is correct, trying to criticize music when you don't understand the art is like saying Moby Dick sucks when you don't understand the literary merit. The comprehension requires education and an open mind. That is why music was always intended for the intelligent. On another note, it seems funny how all those who put down these great performances have little to no history on their own youtube accounts. They have no "credence" to give criticism, much less bag on other people's performances.
I would like to hear more weight in you sound. More point and bounce Find a copy of the CD Contrast for trumpet. It will give you some insight to what I am saying. Good luck.
This piece was played really well, and I gotta give those players their props, but this just raises another irk I have with contemporary compositions. It seems that not a lot of it makes very little sense... it's more like performance art or experiments with sound.
Yeah, great. But where's the tune ;O) Joking aside, nice use of tone, harmony and range, and obviously very accomplished musicians, however, I honestly don't get the turning away from the front thing. It's like turning down an electric guitar so it's not too loud...?! Interesting to see what the composers notes are on this. Beautiful clarity, especially through the louder passages, not overwhelming.
To end the earlier argument. Northwestern is arguable the best undergrad school, but Julliard is, in my own opinion, the best grad school for classical styles in the nation. On another note, Don't like the piece, but it's very well played. The more....yes..i'll say it, Atonal OR (note the or) modern pieces are not my style. Nor do I generally like listening to them. But this piece is a good representation of the upper crust of the above mentioned styles.
Atonal music has more mathematics to it than tonal music. You can make a melody out of anything in a scale with tonal music, but you have to think a lot more with atonal music.
Hey "QualityWince" if you and "musicgnome" were smart you'd forego college and start playin' with pro's and make some money. We are looking for a trumpet player right now. Check out our video and gets back to us.
great piece and great job playing
Excellent. Would love to have a CD to play on the radio...
I'd love to hear this ensemble do my original setting for 12 trumpets of 'a rocky headland amid wild winds'.
Great performance!!!!!
And that is why they are at Juilliard. Well done.
Nice job guys! Wish I could have been there with you this year. Tell Brandon his piece rocks out.
That was great. A lot of the technical stuff was really doable, but the endurance they have is remarkable... I couldn't last that long if my life depended on it..

The sound concept at Northwestern is what makes he school so amazing. Try listening to their piece from this past year's competition.
The vibrato is so tight, I wish I could play in groups like this...very well done.
Beautiful!!!!!!!!
sweet sweet, hey you guys should put up your 2008 ntc performance!! i'd like to see that.
those rhythms are incredible at the beginning!

Excellent playing.
and 3rd place is freaking ridiculous, I can't believe that.
This is amazing! I'm hoping to go to julliard
YOU'RE THE MAN CALEB!!!!
The vertical alignment on this is so good its disgusting.
The thing about NTC....you can be this freakishly amazing and only get third place. Goodness.
sweet, if only the recording equipment used for this video was any good, and the recording mastered
but awesome, i love trumpets

I believe Grand View State won? It's still hard to believe - this performance was AMAZING!
DAH-nah-nah-nah-nah
NAH-nah-nah-nah-nah...
BATMAN!!!!
i love this song.
Who is Tal? A Klingon? He's got a kickass song written about him!

Amazing dissonant chords.

1:00 to skip the non-playing
8:07 to skip the bad parts.

Unless your trying not to overpower somebody or a section. I wouldn't say NEVER.
Caleb Hudson has a foot long!!!!
7:17 .... wtf
never point your trumpet at the stand
High schoolers CANNOT DO THIS.
resonant sorry
