Bro, freestyles can be written or off top. It's been that way since the beginning of the genre. People that are good with the pen had a bunch of black and white composition books with rhymes and once memorized they pull different aspects of rhymes and put them together while freestyling. Some of the best freestyles have been writtens.

They are freestyling. Freestyling is just adjusting your verse, to different beats to show off your flow and cadence. Rapping without using writtens isnt freestyling. People always mix and match those two.
Incorrect they are both freestyle ppl just conflate the 2. Freestyle = a verse that is not connected to any song. Also freestyle = the ability to create a rap verse on the spot to match the cadence of the record. Both correct it then comes down to preference.

9:04 - I think the whole freestyle/free verse question is hard to know what someone means by it. In general I've heard that freestyle as a base just means not in a standard verse, chorus, hook, etc. That usage doesn't always mean off the dome. I'm still new to the scene though, so I welcome any input or correction (especially if it comes with sources. :D )
I think if they say "Off the top (of the head/dome)" it means they are making it up on the spot, but freestyle in general just means verse that can be laid on any track. I welcome any correction of course.
