It was probably called to keep the game from getting out of control. It was a really marginal call, but I think the refs were taking a long view. I for one am sick and tired of seeing players go after a guy and start fights over clean hits.
@@ThEaChAiN stop watching the slowmo. The hit came barely a fraction of a second after the puck left his stick. Only thing dirty might be your glasses.
Contact has been a part of hockey since its creation, when did it become a non contact sport? Everytime someone lays a clean hit, a wannabe tough guy, wearing a helmet and face shield, starts a fight. Don't get me wrong, it's free entertainment, they stop the clock, fans are not cheated of any game time but contact is a part of the game.
Elbow to the shoulder. Note that the NHL rulebook doesn't specify that the elbow has to hit the head to be a penalty. I think the 2-minutes was the appropriate call. Olivier doesn't hit Seeler's head, but his elbow needs to stay tucked right through contact like it is at 1:26 and not extended like it is at 1:29. It's not a major because the injury is due to the head into the glass which was just bad luck and not because of the elbow. Also, a lot of the result is due to Seeler changing his angle by stopping right before the hit, resulting in him bending down and turning.
I don't agree with the call, Defenseman put himself in a vulnerable position. Hitting players skates on on the ice, he's gliding, shoulder is the main point of contact and the follow though elbow goes up but it was not an elbow hit. Only reason they game him a 2 minor is because refs did not have a choice to give a penalty but they know they goofed
@PatrikT14 , if you're going to say lead with a shoulder and elbows are okay, you're gonna get Stevens all over again. Lead with shoulder, then drill heads with elbows. That said, I don't think that was elbowing, the hit was over by the time the elbow extended.
What are you going on about? The rule absolutely 100% does state that the ELBOW MUST BE EXTENDED for it to be a call. This elbow was tucked. Rule 45 - Elbowing 45.1 Elbowing - Elbowing shall mean the use of an extended elbow in a manner that may or may not cause injury.
Gotta love how ridiculously inconsistent the officiating is in this league. Tim Peel was publicly sacrificed for this crap. Lifts his arm and then has to save face by manufacturing a penalty on a textbook clean hit.
Andrae had a half hour to duck or avoid the hit. Guys are getting penalties because they hit too hard now? What a joke. No charging, no head shot, especially no elbow. Keep your head up bud
To me that hit is a nothing-burger. They should have not penalized him period. All Olivier wanted to do was get some energy going for his team. It's sad to see just establishing a physical presence in the game is enough to warrant a potential disqualification.
Jody Shelley (CBJ color commentary) was exactly right - Andrae stopped skating right before the hit. That makes it look (at full speed) like Olivier charged him. If Andrae skates through and takes the check, it's a non-issue, shoulder to shoulder hit. That's why Olivier was incredulous right after the hit.
nah, hes talkin about how olivier stopped taking strides and glided into the hit, otherwise itd be an easy charging call. the made up elbowing was bs tho, shouldnt have even been 2min at all
Accurate call, these days anyway. Andrea got rid of the puck well before Olivier hit him… it’s a late hit as much as it is an elbow. If they didn’t call anything, that’d be ok too.
Obviously Columbus announcers. 1:06 you see the elbow on the head... it was there through the hit. It started up high, and as the Flyer guy went down, the elbow stayed with his face like it was planted there. Looking forward to see what the league says about it. I guess Seeler made him pay... NOT.
Elbow is tucked, the flyer braced low and is already a smaller guy, ya looked bad, wasn’t bad at all. Elbow is near the head after the follow through but was never used to make initial contact. So what’s the league gonna look at?
We need to just turn the NHL into a no check league. Seriously at this point it's ridiculous. They've turned this league soft... EVERY clean hit either A. gets a penalty, B. causes an immediate scrum which stops the action, or C. forces whoever MADE the hit to keep their head on a swivel and needing to drop the mitts later on in the game for "justice" when all he did was his job. It isn't just the refs and Bettman trying to soften the league... the vast majority of players themselves would rather skate around without having to worry about getting hit as well because half of them don't even know HOW to take a hit the correct way. 10 years from now (maybe sooner) I gaurantee you all open ice hits will be completely illegal and only soft ass "hits" against the boards will be allowed.
The League is confused, the Refs are definitely confused !!! That's a clean hit all day, and twice on Sunday !! What are we doing here ? This isn't the game I grew up playing, watching and loving. The referees are ruining the game, or being told to ruin the game. UNREAL ! Why not just taking hitting out FFS.
Soft ass game! Unless they are going to implement a height range for NHL players they're going to have to accept some guys only come up to another's elbow. What is Olivier supposed to do, drop to his knees and hit him? Same problem with Rempe. Chara never got these stupid calls.
Hit looked good. Unfortunately the Flyers guys head hit the glass. 2 minutes is a perfect review. + a fight. Excellent. Pens fan who loves Olivier highlights.
It’s crazy that they can call a penalty on this but guys are run from behind all the time and the zebras just stand there like idiots. Just taking hitting out of the game if this is the shit we have to put up
Horse shit call. That was a totally clean hit, and a good one. NO elbow whatsoever. Pathetic what the League has become. Is this Europe? The ads keep creeping in. They on the helmets now. Have you seen the disgusting European League's jerseys? That's what's coming if fans don't stand up and protest this corporate takeover.
He finished his check like everyone is taught.
Gotta love Seeler. Win lose or draw he’s all heart. Any team would be lucky to have him.
The Oilers will gladly trade for him, and Olivier too!! 😜
Good for him for stepping up , but there's no way he's beating Olivier. Good thing Seeler fell , because things would not have gone well for him.
Perfectly clean hit. The elbow is a normal follow-through.
Looked pretty clean. Calling elbowing instead is kinda bull$hit.
It was probably called to keep the game from getting out of control. It was a really marginal call, but I think the refs were taking a long view. I for one am sick and tired of seeing players go after a guy and start fights over clean hits.
Clean hit. Anyone whining about that should just go watch the new girls league, they made it just for you ...
Spoken like a guy who watches rather than plays...
If RandyChase got a splinter he would call 2 minutes for an ouchie because he a little b!tch boy.
Yup. Go watch figure skating Sally
It's such a stupid situation... What is Olivier supposed to do about the fact the league let's players in who only come eye to cup with him.
There's a new girls league? 😋✌️😎
I’m a Philly fan but how was that a penalty? Cmon. That was the definition of a smart clean check
A clean hit and then a win in the fight, Olivier is a DAWG
Olivier is a tough S O B ,but he's NOT a dirty guy.....
Flyer cleared the puck before the hit. That's dirty

Just a hard hit. Confused as how you call an elbowing penalty on a guy who has his arm tucked to his body on impact
Man Olivier is a different gravy
Big clean hockey hit
Big clean check!, what's the penalty for?, charging?.
They called it elbowing
Seeler was what we call a sacrifice
That’s not a charge. Doesn’t stride into him, doesn’t leave his feet. Clesn!

The inconsistency in the reffing is getting out of hand. It feels like every game theres a major issue
Hit was clean... but the drug testing policies are questionable. Guy is just crushing the league
Clean hit. Super soft call.
Good on Olivier for winning that scrap. Shouldn’t have to defend himself for a clean hit anyway. Phantom elbow.

Great hit. Clean and hard.
NHL has ruined it self with these type of calls. Might as well make it a non contact sport!?
Clean hit, but he's a bum for going after a 5'8" rookie like that. Seeler may not be a great fighter, but he'll fight anyone.
Hahaha... we call it hockey.
Clean hit....
Was definitely elbowing you can see him start to bring his arm up just before contact.
Clean hit. Bad call.
That might be a penalty in the pwhl
Should of been another 2 min for embellishment, refs are not to bright.
Where's Deslauriers?
Yeah he’s hardly in the lineup anymore. Usually they dress Hathaway and figure he’s good enough for soft league.
Nicolas Deslauriers is on the injured reserve
24 vs 24
Fight? What fight did Seeler lose? Visor fighters are no fighters at all. These guys would have never made it in the real days of hockey fighters.
Feels like a deja vu
Poor call. Can't admit they are wrong. Why? Ego
Useless refs and review room taking forever for a 2 min. Penalty from the start.
Finish your check without your elbow and all will be good.
Lame call. Olivier should have kept swinging. There was no bell to answer.
